Political Correctness or just ridiculous

Thankfully an awful lot of people these days choose not to be offensive to their fellow humans and don't even think about political correctness at all. It is not a term we use or invented. We just call it being polite.

These politically correct fanatics are in the minority so why do we pander to them?

Years ago a work colleague wouldn't let us talk about how we liked our coffee. She insisted that we said 'with or without milk' and not black coffee or white coffee.

Despite her ridiculous protests of racism I am perfectly sure this has made that woman’s day.

I am convinced there are many people like her scouring shops and websites desperately looking for something to be outraged at.

What really makes me cross is how often the person or business concerned issues a grovelling apology to these people and the ‘offending’ wording is changed.

Why can’t we all just stand up to this politically correct nonsense once and for all ?

Tobacco is a poison.
It's unacceptable because the (white) people who named it didn't think that tobacco plantations are connected with slavery.
I'm not offended because I'm white and I didn't make any connection either with poison or slavery.
It isn't up to other people, who (like me) weren't offended, to say it's ridiculous. Similarly I didn't think how offensive the statues of slave-owners were to people of colour, until I was given enough information to make me think about it. We're the generation who've had professional careers and families, and been told we failed the interview because we were likely to get pregnant. I doubt those men thought they were being offensive, but they were.

Treacle, toffee, Ebony, midnight are all colours in my underwear drawer. They can take offence but they can’t take my knickers and bras!

Tobacco is a shade that we can all imagine even if we don’t see it, a colour should be recognisable by it’s name.
I don’t think it’s meant to be a match for somebody’s skin, after all you don’t see many blue or flowered people do you?
I hope M&S don’t automatically cave in to this daft complaint.

IMO this is an example of someone looking for something to be offended about. It's ridiculous and I wish M & S hadn't felt it necessary to apologise.

If you look at the colour choices there are several dubious names for the darker shades ... cinnamon, sienna, fudge etc. so why is tobacco so offensive?

Why are any of those names offensive? They simply name a shade that buyers can identify.

I see a Chinese company selling on Amazon advertised the colour of their men’s brogues as n*** brown. David Lammy complained and Amazon have since removed the offensive n word.

That colour was a very dark brown and a pair of my indoor school shoes was that colour. It was 60 years ago.

I do think that this was a case of someone wanting to be offended.

How about calling a perfume Opium? Isn't that bad for everyone?

So is fudge (sugar = obesity) bad for you and one of the darkish colours.

I don’t think tobacco is a nice word for a colour as tobacco is bad for you, that’s all. Silly really when there are plenty of other words.

I read up on this and the complaint was that the lighter colours were sweet words such as cinnamon but the darker colour was tobacco which is bad for you. I don’t agree that a young person of colour would be scarred by this for life but I can get where they are coming from. M&S just took it from a colour chart not realising.
