Oldtimer60 of course there will be a new left wing party and you will be able to uphold your principles, but with Starmer in charge the centrist view of the majority will prevail, and the centrist right will join them because they can’t stomach the right wing policies the current government is pursuing. This Labour party will never get it's act together under this leader the split is now just too wide. As was said up thread a new party would have new leadership and a fresh start especially if it is well funded on launch. The only way for the existing party to continue to speak for all on the left will be if there is a leadership challenge and it succeeds, but still much would rely on who became leader.

For me, freedom of speech in my life surmounts all else, and that is now not to be found in the Labour Party.

Devorgilla that analogy doesn't wash. In this case the judge is saying the jurors have no right to comment on or discuss the case, they aren't permitted to give a verdict because he's the only one allowed.

Discussing it on forums like this does not involve the Labour Party. Discussing an issue under review can seriously impact on the outcome, not always for a fair or best result. There is a reason why judges instruct the jury not to discuss the case with others.

So are some people saying they would be happy for someone who has ignored the recommendations of the EHRC, who has tried to shut down democracy, and actually threatened the people who elected him, to be in charge of the country just because they don't think there is anyone else suitable. Isn't that sort of thnking dangerous?

Well, my family are all rejoining the Labour Party.

With those of us leaving the Labour Party at this time, hopefully, there will be a new party to join. It certainly looks to be on the cards.

In 2005 when David Cameron became leader of the Conservative party, party membership was 258,000. By 2012 it was 133,000. By 2019 it was 180,000. Just saying. Of course the left are leaving the Labour Party at the moment, that doesn’t prove anything other than they supported Corbyn’s views. Some will be back, some won’t, some will defect from the Tories to Labour, and so on.....

I think that the Labour Party is the busted flush of British politics. If, as was being talked on up thread, a fresh left wing party was formed I would be one of the first to join.

Ok, so who should be leader? The charismatic Long Bailey? The loose cannon that is Angela Raynor (who I do actually like....but she really should have exerted a bit of self control when she made that remark in parliament the other week). And am I right in thinking that on the run up to the last election Corbyn and McDonnell weren’t on speaking terms.

Corbyn is yesterday's man. Starmer was supposed to be tomorrow's Prime Minister. He has proven that he is not fit to lead the Labour Party now.

That is the problem as thousands every week leave the party.

It has not gone far beyond Corbyn , he is the cause of it.

As has been said up thread, this has gone far beyond Corbyn and anything he has done. It is now about Starmer, freedom of speech in the party and the suspension of long time members just for wishing to discuss the issue in no more than it is being discussed in this thread.

If you are a Labour Party member you cannot discuss Corbyn or his suspension or removal of the whip at any party meeting because Starmer has dictated that you must not. You can as the same Labour Party member come on this forum, or any online forum, and discuss the matter as openly as you like.

So much for democracy and feel speech in the Labour Party.

Isn’t the problem mainly due to the fact that Corbyn is refusing to acknowledge that he was in the wrong regarding anti semitism in the party? Or am I missing something here?

Because there is a difference between discussing his suspension and the withdrawal of the whip which is the current problem , and actually nothing to do with him, and harking back to what he did or didn't do as leader. What seems to be the idea some posters have is that Starmer can do as he likes because there is a slight chance that he will manage to get Labour elected as a government. Forgive me but I have no desire to see a man who has no respect for democracy within the party he leads in charge of the country.

He is no longer the leader, why keep bringing him up, he is not asking his supporters to do anything

But some of the centrists in the LP are the people actually demanding Corbyn be reinstated. One of the CLPs was the first to vote for Starmer in the leadership election. It isn't anything to do with left or centrist grouping it's to do with democracy in the party and the proper implementation of the right to free speech as described in the EHRC report. What I see here is a man who can't admit when he is in the wrong

I've always voted Labour even when the leader was not entirely to my liking as it is infinitely preferable to a Tory government. I think Starmer will make Labour electable once we get past the current mess but he also has to persuade people in the wider community to trust us.

I dont think its Starmers job to win the election I think it's his job to make the labour party electable, and I am afraid that this mess is part of the process.

The next election is four years away by which time a lot of dust will have settled, new UK/Worldwide issues will have arisen and the electorate will decide which leader and party is most likely to deal effectively with them for the greater good of all. I very much doubt, by the next election, the electorate as a whole will give a stuff about the Whip being withdrawn/restored from/to various people across the parties. It certainly wasn't top of the agenda for me when I voted last time.
