Looking at the figures, it seems very likely that Trump has won a second term. How that will affect the world remains to be seen.?

rosecarmel it's interesting how you aren't a fan of Obama who I (along with much of the outside world) really admire, but I do appreciate that other countries often have a very different view of a country's leader than the inhabitants of said country. I "may" be influenced by the fact I fancy the pants off Obama lol

Whitewavemark2 Wed 04-Nov-20 23:04:58

It occurred to me that if Trump loses, we will be left with a mini-Trump and the worse leader in the western world?

grabba Wed 04-Nov-20 22:09:33

not looking so good for Donald Trump at the moment

rosecarmel Wed 04-Nov-20 21:28:42

It would not be wonderful if Obama returned- 2 terms is enough- And for good reason-

It's so hard to understand why they'd want the orange racist running the country. I've just watched Ch4 news interviews with Cuban immigrants in Florida. They were Trump supporters, said they'd had enough of socialism in Cuba, came to the US to be free, to work and succeed. The group interviewed had indeed worked and succeeded. I think the cost of Biden's health and social care policies frightened some (selfish) people

I suppose these Trump supporters don’t have the imagination to understand that they themselves could one day be the ones dependent on state health & social care policies.

What l still can't understand is how, in a country with approximately 320 million people, these two are considered the best option to run the country, which, whether we like it or not, is the self-appointed leader of the free world. I have always thought that a Republican president is bad news for the rest of the world but Trump is on a whole new level. Even the Democrats are far to the right of our Conservative party but l originally thought Biden was marginally better than Trump - let's face it anything has to be better than Trump. Unfortunately, he seems to have no charisma and, worse, symptoms of dementia. Wouldn't it be wonderful if Obama could return? He was and is revered throughout the world while Trump is reviled throughout the world.

Looking hopeful now!
A big change from this morning, thank goodness, a lot of postal votes to be counted, but they tend to be Democrat votes.?
It’s still going to be close though, maybe Biden 270 and Trump 268.

Bluecat Wed 04-Nov-20 21:21:10

I wouldn't call the Democrats socialists, by a very long stretch of the imagination. In fact, I would say that they would be considered as conservatives in most countries. However, by comparison to the much more right wing Republicans, they seem much more liberal.

I can't get wildly excited about Biden and would have much preferred someone much more radical, such as Bernice Sanders. However, I suppose that he would have been slaughtered by the media, like Jeremy Corbyn. At least Biden offers rational and intelligent leadership, and should make better decisions regarding important issues such as the pandemic.

So fingers crossed that he wins.

Anyone else mentally and physically drained waiting for Joe Biden to hit the magic 270?

Yes it is very stressful, not least because it affects us so much.

I’ve been out in the sun walking today as well. Incredibly warm!

Whitewavemark2 Wed 04-Nov-20 21:18:21

Well done America!!

Biden speech was Presidential, and one that Trump could never have given.

Callistemon Wed 04-Nov-20 21:12:33

No.

We've been out in the lovely sunshine, cooked a meal, had a glass of wine, had another one after sad news and que sera, sera, quite frankly.

No amount of angst will change anything.

icanhandthemback It's interesting, isn't it? I guess it's to do with the idea that the states hold power and the suspicion towards the state. It would take years of wrangling over the constitution for there to be any change.

Retrospective insanity

I hope as soon as Biden gets to 270, he puts in a request to go into the Whitehouse and measure up for curtains and drive Trump insane????

Can that be done retrospectively? Trump is insane!

?

icanhandthemback Wed 04-Nov-20 20:58:48

The trouble is, if you have been a conservative (not necessarily very right wing) and have always distrusted socialists, even with the devil incarnate in charge of your party, it is a big ask to expect them to vote for socialism. Couple that with an opposition whose president elect is old, senile and somebody you have not respected for 40 years, it is unlikely that you will be convinced that he deserves your vote.
I can't help thinking that the lash up the Americans call a democratic process needs an overhaul. Surely having different rules across the nation, sometimes even in the States, makes people suspicious. A common agreement on the process would take a lot of the distrust away and individual candidates wouldn't have to seek Court action. A friend of mine is American and has spent quite a lot of time in different countries during their elections which are so much better run. She cannot believe how appalling the American system is by comparison and yet Americans look down their noses at their systems.

^I've just watched Ch4 news interviews with Cuban immigrants in Florida. They were Trump supporters^
But do they not realise that, had Trump been in power, they would not live in the US of A?

Maybe they've been talking to Priti Patel. hmm

I think you'll find that some immigrants to the UK are the same. They're the ones who've succeeded and it's a mistake to think they have much in common with other immigrants who haven't succeeded.

Some people are saying Trump has done what he promised to do - and that didn't include anything about social justice or welfare.

His core supporters are white, more males than females and over 60, but identity politics is also very important in the US, so there have been vocal groups such as "Latinos for Trump" etc. Visible support for BLM and some of the more extreme calls, such as defunding the police, probably lost the Democrats some votes.

It looks as though Michigan is going to call for Biden.

If he wins Nevada, he's won (unless Trump's pram throwing works).

I've never had much of an interest in American politics until Trump trumped by, now I'm watching avidly, desperately wanting him to be voted out. Surely America wouldn't be so daft as to re elect him? Would they?

They are certainly trying
