I’m holding my breath. And I feel quite tearful!

As I read this order it is emphasising the importance of preventing and combating discrimination on grounds of gender identity or sexual orientation and to ensure all agencies review their policies and practices to root out any such discrimination.

My family in the USA feel more hopeful than they have done for a long time. Covid is out of control and the country is so deeply divided, with so much anger, so the need for action is urgent.

So do mine and so do my Australian family and me and the rest of my British family. He has brought hope to people all round the world on day one. Now for a far more difficult next four years.

I had high hopes for Biden......but on day one he removes women's sex-based rights. I hope this will not go un-noticed and be the start of a very dangerous trend.

That is such a worry, BeverlyJB.

I hope to goodness that he is persuaded to have second thoughts on that one.

I wonder if he even understood the implications.

I also wonder what his VP's thoughts on it are...

I must be being blind but it looks as if he has signed that order. What has been lost in the US exactly by passing that?

Tolaton21 Thu 21-Jan-21 13:21:06

I think Trump is mentally ill but those close to him can’t face it !
Have family in USA who voted Trump but they were happy he has gone.
Yesterday was a breath of fresh air for us all .

Sorry but the notion that Joe Biden is a woke, radical Lefty is the funniest thing I have heard for ages. The man is a centrist. If he lived in the UK, he would be a moderate Conservative.

As an old-school Lefty myself, I don't expect any huge reforms from Biden. (I would have preferred Bernice Sanders but you can't have everything.) However, if he reverses the damage done by Trump, it will be enough. He has made a good start.

Trump was bitter and mean-spirited right up to the end. I am not surprised that, at the end of his presidency, he left Washington filled with heavily armed troops and every state in fear of possible violence. It amazes me that people keep comparing the attack on the Capitol to the BLM protests. There have been many protests in American history - for instance, most of us here are old enough to remember the Vietnam demos and the protests after the murder of Martin Luther King - but this was an insurrection. An attempt to prevent by force the result of a democratic election, with the threats to kill people like the Vice President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives....That's not a protest, it's an attempted coup, and the President himself incited it. Thank God that he has gone and that yesterday passed without incident.

My family in the USA feel more hopeful than they have done for a long time. Covid is out of control and the country is so deeply divided, with so much anger, so the need for action is urgent. Now they have leadership which is sane and sensible, after 4 years of madness. Hopefully Biden will be able to heal the wounds but he has a struggle on his hands, particularly as Trump has convinced so many people that the election was rigged. I wouldn't want Biden's job.

And why, as Trump boarded the plane, was Y. M. C. A playing in the background? Satire?

happycatholicwife1 Thu 21-Jan-21 13:04:17

Wow! We were delighted to see them go. He nearly destroyed us. He's hectoring everyone about the rising waters and climate; meanwhile, he's living in a small island with a water view. Total hypocrite.

I am definitely not a Trump fan and felt a huge lifting of mood watching him go but anybody who really thinks this is over, is naive. The groundswell of his fans who have an aversion to socialism in any form, is still there and now they are feeling very cheated because they have been brainwashed by the narcissistic Trump.
It amazes me that anyone can thing socialism is "evil" and I'm not ever going to vote Labour. However, even I can see that in principle, that pure socialism and communism isn't evil, it just doesn't work because the rich leave the area. Even communism in an ideal world might be good but you always seem to have to shoot people to get them to try it. That's the evil bit!
I love that the inauguration featured people singing who would likely appeal to the young. A stodgy, sombre affair hardly makes it more dignified, just boring.

Joe Bidden isn't a socialist though is he. It was just another stick to beat him with. At best he is a Liberal Socialist - a party, I have to admit, I feel is sadly missing in this country.

Any extreme will propogate evil simply because, to succeed, they need to supress those with the opposite view.

Have a nice day - truth Will Win!

Some QAnon conspiracy theorists, in public and private internet forums and chat rooms, were despondent Wednesday as their prophecy of an Inauguration Day coup to keep Donald Trump in power failed again as President Joe Biden was sworn into office.

The situation left some QAnon adherents with no choice but to write off the conspiracy theory entirely, but others continued to maintain that it was still developing.

QAnon supporters believed Wednesday's inauguration was an elaborate trap set by the former president, wherein Democrats would be rounded up and executed while Trump retained power. Various other doomsdays theorized by the QAnon community have also come and gone without incident.

But in contrast with the events of those days, Biden's inauguration leaves the community with little daylight. As their predictions failed to come true, radicalized QAnon members expressed their sense of betrayal on messaging apps like Telegram and forums named after their failed doomsday scenario, The Great Awakening.

While Biden took the oath, a top post on a QAnon forum read "I don't think this is supposed to happen" and wondered, "How long does it take the fed to run up the stairs and arrest him?"

Other users became immediately dejected, realizing that their dreams of a bloody coup were not going to be realized.

"Anyone else feeling beyond let down?" a top post on a popular QAnon forum read. "It's like being a kid and seeing the big gift under the tree thinking it is exactly what you want only to open it and realize it was a lump of coal."

One of the largest QAnon groups on Telegram closed comments to let everyone "take a breather" after Biden's inauguration. When it reopened after it was accused of censorship, thousands of users expressed a range of reactions: confusion and realization that QAnon was in fact a hoax, as well as renewed commitment to the conspiracy theory, despite its unreliability.

Ron Watkins, the former administrator for the message board and QAnon hub 8kun and a major force behind false conspiracy theories surrounding the election results, seemed to capitulate, posting a note to his more than 100,000 followers: "We gave it our all. Now we need to keep our chins up and go back to our lives as best we are able."

QAnon influencers fled to fringe apps like Telegram and Gab after years of unbridled growth on larger platforms, including Twitter and Facebook, which banned QAnon accounts and content last year. Facebook reported Tuesday that it had removed 60,000 pages, groups and accounts that had promoted the conspiracy theory since November.

Some QAnon followers spent weeks preparing for a nationwide blackout starting at noon on Inauguration Day, warning friends and family in text chains and Facebook messages to buy CB radios and stock up on food. They believed Trump would announce martial law through the Emergency Alert System before carrying out mass arrests.

Travis View, who hosts the conspiracy-debunking podcast QAnon Anonymous, said those who make money on the conspiracy theory are having a harder time persuading adherents to keep the faith after such a spectacularly wrong prediction.

"QAnon influencers who have built large audiences over the past three years continue to encourage their audiences to 'trust the plan,'" View said. "Many rank-and-file QAnon followers are expressing anger and disillusionment."

Some QAnon followers stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, including a man wearing a QAnon shirt, while leading a pack of protesters toward the Senate chamber.

In QAnon chats captured by the fact-checking technology company Logically.AI and reviewed by NBC News, QAnon supporters drew hard lines shortly before the inauguration began and immediately felt embarrassed when the coup did not occur.

"God help us we're beyond ready. If nothing happens I will no longer believe in anything," one supporter said at the beginning of inauguration.

"We all just got played," another said moments later.

Have a nice day - truth Will Win!

NannyC2 you really should log on to those QAnon sites you have been reading for so long. If you do you will read that the promises made by Trump are empty and people realise that they have been taken for a ride and feel foolish for believing it all. Trump doesn’t care a fig for any of his supporters who he very recently called ‘low class’. He is away in Mar A Lago counting all the dollars he made from his election fighting fund and dreaming up his next scam which is the only thing he is really good at, next to lying of course.

25Avalon - all I can say is mmmm - nothing is impossible. Clock is ticking.......

This is the second time NannyC2 has said such things. Each time it has sounded like a threat to the rest of us. Is this really allowed on Gransnet?

Mini2020 Thu 21-Jan-21 12:35:49

The music is uplifting, a celebration of a new President and hopefully a new USA.

Anniebach Thu 21-Jan-21 12:35:47

NannyC2 when Trump told those wearing the ‘6 million was not enough’ T shirts ‘we love you’ was he speaking for you ?

Ive been glued to the TV for weeks watching things unfold so no way I would miss yesterday’s coverage. Loved it. Struck primarily by the petulant, churlish behaviour of the Donald and his “ I love you” farewell and the statesmanlike professionalism of Biden. And VP Harris? Wow! I dont claim to understand the politics of it all TBH but to me it felt like a warm hug after 4 years of combative, inane rhetoric. Time will tell I guess. Did anyone else actually hold their breath on the walk up to the WH when POTUS trotted to the barriers to speak to reporters ? Not once but several times. My heart was in my mouth praying he wouldnt trip or slip. Only one mention above of Springsteen I think? Admittedly Im a lifelong fan but I thought his performance was amazing !

I assume that you are referring to your question as to whether I think it is all over.

No I don’t, but if those likely to commit terrorism are the example of racist thugs we saw on the television on Jan 6 with T shirts proclaiming that 6 million was not enough and Auschwitz -work is freedom, then they must be fought just as we fought the Nazis 80 years ago.

Scum.

pamdixon Thu 21-Jan-21 12:20:53

I am so glad that I wasn't the only person who watched it. I wanted to make sure that Trump really had gone.................

Annaram1 Thu 21-Jan-21 12:17:03

Oh Nanny! That is what my brother and his wife think, and
they are in England. Trump has many supporters who do not think he was delusional, just a wonderful human being who left his country in a far better place than it was when he took over... ho ho...

I loved the inauguration and watched it avidly. I am worried that Biden may be assassinated at some stage though.

Sooze, I think most people will think that you area Trump fan. He never said it as it was. It was only his lies, not the truth. Some people will believe anything.

Good luck America!
