Something joyful for William and Catherine to focus on.

I do think it was unnecessary to bitch a woman because some here was just speaking of the birth of a child and the child’s name.

Actually tbf Monica first brought up the D of S. After that all bets were off., although if you ask me ( which I admit you didn’t) starting a thread on PM after the deletions of threads and posts of several RF threads was hardly the wisest thing to do. Unless of course .......If someone would like a nice thread to cheer us all up, there’s plenty of possible topics.

Yes, yes he was. He chose some odd books though. We were all girls (he was in his element) and his choices were a bit 'blokey' - Homage to Catalonia and Heart of Darkness.
But he also chose Equus which I adored and became a bit obsessed with Peter Shaffer, especially Royal Hunt of the Sun.
He was hilarious, but also very, very serious too. He was also my neighbour at the time.
I'm very fond of him inspite of some of the dodgy stuff that he's come out with.

You fired the starting gun Lucca

Just catch the next bullet in your teeth and spit the thing out, then take a bow wink

The Frank Skinner?

NellG Tue 16-Mar-21 09:16:19

It's very evocative, and I can see the association with PM Fanny.

Was he any good as an English Teacher?

FannyCornforth Tue 16-Mar-21 09:14:01

This is a very varied thread! smile

FannyCornforth Re-Joan Hunter Dunn, are you a John Betjeman fan or just good at history?

I just remember it from A level English. I don't think that I have rtfp since then (and just now, thanks Nell!) Coincidentally, my A level English teacher was Frank Skinner!

Miss J. Hunter Dunn, Miss J. Hunter Dunn,
Furnish'd and burnish'd by Aldershot sun,
What strenuous singles we played after tea,
We in the tournament - you against me!

Love-thirty, love-forty, oh! weakness of joy,
The speed of a swallow, the grace of a boy,
With carefullest carelessness, gaily you won,
I am weak from your loveliness, Joan Hunter Dunn.

Miss Joan Hunter Dunn, Miss Joan Hunter Dunn,
How mad I am, sad I am, glad that you won,
The warm-handled racket is back in its press,
But my shock-headed victor, she loves me no less.

Her father's euonymus shines as we walk,
And swing past the summer-house, buried in talk,
And cool the verandah that welcomes us in
To the six-o'clock news and a lime-juice and gin.

The scent of the conifers, sound of the bath,
The view from my bedroom of moss-dappled path,
As I struggle with double-end evening tie,
For we dance at the Golf Club, my victor and I.

On the floor of her bedroom lie blazer and shorts,
And the cream-coloured walls are be-trophied with sports,
And westering, questioning settles the sun,
On your low-leaded window, Miss Joan Hunter Dunn.

The Hillman is waiting, the light's in the hall,
The pictures of Egypt are bright on the wall,
My sweet, I am standing beside the oak stair
And there on the landing's the light on your hair.

By roads "not adopted", by woodlanded ways,
She drove to the club in the late summer haze,
Into nine-o'clock Camberley, heavy with bells
And mushroomy, pine-woody, evergreen smells.

Miss Joan Hunter Dunn, Miss Joan Hunter Dunn,
I can hear from the car park the dance has begun,
Oh! Surrey twilight! importunate band!
Oh! strongly adorable tennis-girl's hand!

Around us are Rovers and Austins afar,
Above us the intimate roof of the car,
And here on my right is the girl of my choice,
With the tilt of her nose and the chime of her voice.

And the scent of her wrap, and the words never said,
And the ominous, ominous dancing ahead.
We sat in the car park till twenty to one
And now I'm engaged to Miss Joan Hunter Dunn.

A new baby brings with it love and joy, congratulations to the family.

And we’re off

Anniebach Tue 16-Mar-21 08:57:38

The D of Sussex ? oh the American, dark hair , married to a rich bloke , can’t recall her bottom but certainly a lot of mouth

Lucca Tue 16-Mar-21 08:50:44

Who’s bitched any one? Unless calling someone posh and getting their hair colour wrong is considered “bitchy”. Plenty of really bitchy comments about the D of Sussex on about 100 threads.

Oh, not bitchy, just “criticism of her behaviour”, remember ?

Right back to this baby, Grace is a nice name I agree., but I admit I wouldn’t recognise the mother if I saw a photo, I seem to remember her back view at her sisters wedding, she being possessed if an admirable bottom.

'Irrelevant and provocative'
Also inevitable

Lucca Tue 16-Mar-21 08:35:14

One of my least favourite expressions on GN is “certain posters”. And if I have ever used it myself I hereby apologise.

I admit to some surprise at finding a thread dedicated to this new arrival, but that’s fine, each to his own etc.

I do think it was unnecessary to bring in a comment about the duchess of Sussex. Irrelevant and provocative,

vegansrock Tue 16-Mar-21 08:33:53

My friends daughter has just had a baby. Shes not blonde either. Great news. I don’t wish theses semi royals any ill. So all those comments about guillotines are ridiculous. I’m sure they are all lovely people , but I don’t get why people gush over them either.

Anniebach Tue 16-Mar-21 08:25:32

eazybee. They admire the ‘one foot in one foot out member
of the royal family’

FannyCornforth Tue 16-Mar-21 08:24:27

I always think of the sisters as being Joan Hunter-Dunn types.
I must admit I am strangely fascinated by Carole and her daughters.
They must be very determined and exacting types

eazybee Tue 16-Mar-21 08:21:15

Although they affect to despise the royal family and all connected with it, certain posters appear immediately like sharks scenting blood on any post concerning them,to seize the opportunity to express, frequently, their disdain.

I had no idea Pippa Middleton had given birth; won't change my world but I like to hear of new babies, joyful occasions, so thank you whoever posted the news.

OnwardandUpward Tue 16-Mar-21 08:20:26

Congratulations to Pippa, her husband and the Middleton Clan.
I saw a photo of her in the news on Sunday and she didn't have a very big bump, so I didn't realise how far on she was. grin

Mind you, it must be nice to be built like that, you can carry any dress style off with grace. Those two girls are what I can only describe as "lithe" and blessed with great genes.

FannyCornforth Tue 16-Mar-21 08:11:48

Berylsgranny I think it's also to show how high-minded they are, and that chatting about this sort of thing is beneath them

FannyCornforth Tue 16-Mar-21 08:07:06

M0nica

FannyCornforth as Pippa Middleton is the sister of the D of C, by other duchess I meant D of S.

M0nica I don't think that you mean me. I haven't said anything about either Duchess

I don't read 'gossip columns' either.
I seem to absorb this sort of thing by osmosis. I also have a very high celeb trivia and tosh threshold
