Blocked Suez Canal - things that had never crossed my mind

Obviously given my age I understand the importance of the Suez Canal but I have to admit that I’ve not asked myself fir years what would happen if it were blocked by a grounded ship. Well it appears that one answer at the moment is that oil prices have gone up by 6% . Another reminder of the interconnectedness of our world.

M0nica Sun 28-Mar-21 22:26:13

Good point! Frankly ship's fuel is the dregs of the oil barrel after all the 'good' stuff has been removed. I cannot see what difference adding a load of pork pies would make to it.

Callistemon Sun 28-Mar-21 22:18:54

Well, I'm totally confused now
Can pork pies be melted down and the fat used to fuel container ships?

I know that used chip fat is recycled to use for fuel .....

M0nica Sun 28-Mar-21 22:07:43

Katie59 I have fact checked it, it is true! Didyou know that Boris Johnson's father is behind it all? He is trying to corner the market in pork pies to sell to the Clintons, who intend to smuggle them onto the Evergreen as fast as the containers are removed to ensure it stays aground longer so that they can sell fuel to the ships that are having to rebunker at Capetown because of their longer journeys and the money...................

No, even I do not believe this. Perhaps someone could improve on it.

BREAKING NEWS : Yorkshire holds it breath as main shipping route to pork pie Shops is blocked !!
Fred Slathwaite , Captain of the vessel, said “ One minute we were fine , then a gust of wind caught us !!”
“Yorkshire is expected to loose as much as £3.45 a day until the carnage can be cleared , which could potentially take weeks to clear “ a spokesman said .

Oh, NannyC2 I guess you must have heard what I heard about the Walmart and Clinton Foundation link to the jammed 'Evergreen?'

I am sorry, again this is all fake news. There were so many sites saying this that I did not know which one to choose. Just google it.

I am not sure whether you are choosing deliberately to post this information to try and spread it and get people to believe it or whether you do not know how to fact check information like this. In this case I have saved you doing that by doing it myself.

M0nica Sun 28-Mar-21 20:51:09

NannyC2 Sorry, your link above is fake news.

The Politifact site www.politifact.com/factchecks/2017/may/12/blog-posting/fake-news-clinton-foundation-has-no-ships-didnt-sm/ that covers this also has the following quotation
This particular fake story, like so many others, originated at TheLastLineOfDefense.org, a parody website that has been the source of several fake news stories that we’ve previously checked. Note the use of the wordparody in the description of the website you link to.

Pleased to hear about the Egyptian president ordering the cargo to be removed.

Strangely, I just picked up some breaking news a while ago about another ship owned and operated by the Clinton Foundation - it was raided as it arrived from Africa this morning at the Port of Baltimore.
If you are interested i what was discovered, it is here..

^On the subject of toilet roll, I've switched to a bamboo one which is produced in the uk and deliver every few weeks.^

Where do they get their bamboo, from, Savvy? It's not exactly a British native plant, is it? Though it grows well here. Are there some enterprising farmers who have diversified into bamboo plantations?

Or is it imported like just about everything else we 'consume'?

It's from a company called Naked Sprout.

Callistemon Sun 28-Mar-21 17:36:40

EllanVannin

Whatever turns you on Callistemon grin

They're lovely and soft.

I was going to post something else but decided it might be too rude. Suffice to say, I am not a contortionist! grin

EllanVannin Sun 28-Mar-21 17:08:43

Is he going to shift it all himself sodapop ?

EllanVannin Sun 28-Mar-21 17:07:03

I read that the Egyptian president has ordered all the cargo to be removed now. That will be a major undertaking.

Callistemon Sun 28-Mar-21 16:18:34

Blimey, I don't fancy bamboo being anywhere near my person.
I'm wearing bamboo socks, EllanVannin
grin

EllanVannin Sun 28-Mar-21 16:11:21

Blimey, I don't fancy bamboo being anywhere near my person.
I'd use the Liverpool Echo first.grin

Joking aside the ship has been shifted by 100ft so I hope the next captain can steer properly without running aground and blaming the wind !

We were watching this on the news the other day and husband spotted containers marked 'Costco' and joked about it scuppering the Costco wholesale toilet roll hoarders. Thank goodness this didn't happen at the start of the pandemic lockdown!

I think it’s my fault it’s still stuck. I forgot to concentrate with Uri Geller at the appointed hour. Sorry, world!

MerylStreep Sun 28-Mar-21 11:54:18

Savvy
That’s reminded me of the days when I first started sailing.
You had to raise your ‘yellow duster’ and wait for customs to come aboard to clear you. Much more exciting than it is now.

EllanVannin Sun 28-Mar-21 11:44:54

I'm not worried about anything else grin, just the animals.

EllanVannin Sun 28-Mar-21 11:43:51

Can't a helicopter be deployed to at least get the livestock off ?

Savvy Sun 28-Mar-21 11:41:32

@ALANaV I live just north of the Tyne and had a friend who had to deal with the crews of the ships using the docks. The reason they anchor at sea is when they're waiting for their time slot to unload. If they've had a good passage, they arrive early so have to wait. There is also the question of immigration as no ship is allowed anywhere near until the crew have been cleared by Border Force.

Each ship has to be guided through the Black Middens at the mouth of the Tyne to avoid getting stuck on the rocks so time slots are issued so they can be met by the harbour master.

On the subject of toilet roll, I've switched to a bamboo one which is produced in the uk and deliver every few weeks.
