What an absolutely ludicrous threat by Annick Girardin. I’m not a Brexiteer, but I cannot think of any way to defend this.

Jersey fishing boats have restrictions/constraints on their catch. French fishermen want /are demanding unrestrained fishing rights in Jersey waters.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 06-May-21 07:25:47

I suppose the hundred plus French fishing boats that are forming a blockade off of Jersey are just posturing. ? (As seen on early morning news)

PM was correct to send two Navy vessels to protect/support the CI.

Brexit - the crap gift that keeps on giving

This is an interesting and measured article about the background to the dispute.

Mamie- I would not be in the least surprised. I see Johnson has now sent in a little cutter to “patrol”. This will all be gone by next week.

The best thing France can do is to ignore the nonsense. Reaction is what they want. As the article says Guernsey has no problem.

Just think if Brexit hadn’t happened.

The gunboats are just “posturing “. Brexit is to blame for this crap.

I do realize that there are problems at the moment but it is shown out of proportion by the UK newspapers. It is election time.
I did watch the French news for once, to see what is happening but there was nothing about Jersey nor Brexit. Near there end of the program there was a pleasant little piece about the UK but I can’t remember what it was about but it wasn’t sneering.

That's interesting, Ellianne, and reassuring. I find it worrying that any European country would even think it's acceptable to threaten cutting off what is after all an essential commodity.

It's a very immature response after Jersey just asked for proof.

The Channel Islands may not be part of the UK but they are Crown Dependencies. We collaborate with them on many aspects, including the justice system.
The inhabitants are British citizens.

I dont agree with this action obviously but I find the anti French sentiment really unpleasant.

I'm not anti-French but I find the anti-Channel Islander comments extremely unpleasant.

I care about Jersey. Living in the South West we almost regard the Channel Islands as our neighbouring counties.
It is highly unlikely that France will do this. I think Girardin was having a hissy fit.
Anyway if it came to it there is on island generation enough to ensure sufficient emergency supply. One of our sons is a geologist in the area and works with EDF on projects. There are always back up alternatives in place.

That's interesting, Ellianne, and reassuring. I find it worrying that any European country would even think it's acceptable to threaten cutting off what is after all an essential commodity.

Oh how I would love to see the awful posturing Macron severely trounced in the elections next year.
Marine Le Pen possibly ?

Ro60 Wed 05-May-21 22:49:00

Thanks Lemongrove, Notspaghetti & Suzziewoozie. ?

Ellianne Wed 05-May-21 22:44:32

Haven't we seen all this fuss before, recently at EDF owned Hinckley Point in Somerset?
It is a storm in a glass of water.
Wait until all the ferry routes open up again and there will be the usual blockades and disruption, followed by threats. It's tiresome all round.

Threatening to cut off Jersey is one step, in theory, they could also cut off parts of the UK too? Or am I getting this all wrong?

It’s just posturing

I heard a long article on the radio very early this morning.
Basically it was a big problem because the French vessels, in order to get a full permit have to prove every trip into Jersey waters over an extended period of time (I think it was a year). According to the guy from Jersey, the paperwork is do-able for larger vessels as all their logs are computerised and collated anyway. This is not easy for the smaller ones who may be tiny businesses. Even so, all the permit applications have to go via the French government to ours and then be sent to Jersey to issue the appropriate license...
Jersey is apparently better at liaising with France than London.
It was more in depth than this but it meant that many would only get a minimum licence.
I think the licences only came out on Friday - which was the last day of the transition period.

lemongrove Wed 05-May-21 21:59:43

They won’t be cutting off anything Ro it’s just typical political willy waving from them, and probably goes down well with their voters.
