The more we talk about it the happier they will be. Best that everyone, including the media, ignores them.
Who's "they"? If you mean those who want to provoke a culture war, I agree.
Quote: Oxford students have voted to take down a portrait of the Queen from their common room because she 'represents recent colonial history' and would make some people feel unwelcome.
Members of the Middle Common Room at Magdalen College - which is made up of graduates - passed the measure by a substantial majority, with one student commenting that 'patriotism and colonialism are not really separable'.
Is this the woke future of our country, to delete our cultural heritage and re-write our history? Do these people even know how tirelessly The Queen has worked for the Commonwealth for the last 70 years?

If the students who voted to remove the queen''s portrait from their common room are to be called "sheeple" then what should we call people who turn up, sometimes hours before a royal event, to catch a fleeting glimpse of a royal limousine?
The Queen won’t give a damn if her portrait is removed! She’s done more for commonwealth than any of these students who are very privileged and as yet not contributed much to society or country!
Sick of the woke generation. Is there anything that doesn't offend them! I am not really a royalist, but it smacks of lack of respect in view of the fact that Prince Philip only recently passed away, but that's typical of this generation. Self, self, self!
Why are you sick of the "woke" generation (if such a thing exists and isn't just a concoction of the culture warmongers)?
To be perfectly honest, it could also be claimed (with some justification) that the boomer generation is only interested in "self, self, self".
PS. I wouldn't have that photo on my walls, so I wouldn't expect students to have it on the walls of their chill out space.

Sheeple voyeurs?
Include the people who seem to have an opinion on every aspect of the lives of the RF, as though they have insider knowledge.

I don't think that it is the younger generation(s) who are offended by this, is it? It seems to me that those who are getting offended on behalf of the royal family are older - at least on this site, anyway.
What's the word for people who take offence on behalf of others, again? It has temporarily escaped me. . .
I’ve just been told by a work colleague that ‘woke’ stands for ‘we obviously know everything’. She was probably joking, but who knows?
I'll be very happy when the word woke drops out of fashion. It's used so often and not properly in many cases.
Not sure about the word Doodledog but I know what you mean. Found this article which was interesting. Offended by proxy. I hadn't heard about the Madonna incident but the girl everyone was getting outraged for wasn't offended and she said so. Only I get to decide if I’m humiliated or not."

...'one student commenting that 'patriotism and colonialism are not really separable'.'
Really? Surely, British colonialism is now historical whereas patriotism is a current feature of life, like it or not, here and around the world. Whatever we may think of Britain's colonial past, and much of it was not so glorious, it is in the past.
Modern colonialism, which one might think students would choose to address, involves occupation not by military might but by industrial and financial power. I suspect it is readily separable from patriotism.
Interesting article Talullah. Thanks for posting the link.
These students that are at Oxford should not have taken the picture down, it is simply another thing to do and in the same
mindset as removing statues. Their actions are patronizing
to the Queen head of our country and a long dedicated worker of the Commonwealth.
Britain's colonial past is exactly that the past. Patriotism is a feature of life and those of us hold high regard for our country.
If these students/ graduates took the vote to remove the picture then they are only trying to be rebellious and if they don't like the college then let them go somewhere else nobody is making them stay there let them leave and study in a different place who do they think they are.
How is it patronising?
I expect they think they are postgraduate students at an Oxford college.
Some of them are certainly not even British, although the college will be very happy to take their extortionate fees.
Unless you are a member of Magdalen's MCR, it isn't any of your business. It's a load of fuss about nothing! You and some others do appear to have risen to the bait of the politicians and media.
So you don't like rebellious students? Maybe they should go somewhere where brains aren't required or they have to act like clones and follow the pack.
Love that link Tallulah. So much taking offence by proxy goes on today.
* . . . if they don't like the college then let them go somewhere else nobody is making them stay there let them leave and study in a different place who do they think they are.*
Are you seriously suggesting that if people don't like a picture they should abandon their education? Honestly? What is the link between taking down a print that was only put there in 2013 and 'not liking the college'? I like my house, but if I didn't like a print I would take it off the wall.
Also, even if they don't 'like the place' (for whatever reason) why should they leave? It is perfectly possible to study somewhere without necessarily liking it. I hated school, but nobody suggested I should leave.
This is ridiculous. A junior common room is just a room where members can get together for a cup of coffee and a chat. It is not a public place. Oxford colleges are largely self-supporting financially, so are not publicly owned. What is on the wall is nothing to do with members of the public, or even members of staff in the college, unless it breaks the law.
Why people are getting so worked up about it all is beyond me.
I see you are becoming quire antagonistic of what I gave as my opinion on what the students had done. I can respond on a thread and will do so.
Those students are patronizing because they think they are superior to our Queen and I for one do not think they are.
Your comment "unless you are a member of Magdalen's MCR it isn't any of your business. is a very tart comment to make and they made it peoples business by doing it in the first place.
Do not put words in my mouth I said they are rebellious students I did not say I did not like them.
If they do not like Oxford and the fact there was a picture of our Queen hanging up then how sad for them let them take their infantile little brains and go and relocate somewhere else.

A lot easier for them just to take the picture off the wall, though ?
Are you dictating what people should have in their own room. Why on earth would you have a say over that. How on earth does not wanting a picture of the queen equate to being superior to her. I dont want a picture of the queen in my living room.
Sort of daft thing university students do. Eventually they grow up
remember, before WW2 Oxford students voted, with a large majority, for the motion This House will under no circumstances fight for its King and country. It caused a furore at the time.
Well, we have been commemorating all those that did just that this week, probably including most of those who voted for this motion
Students do things like this, it is like younger children saying rude words when they think their parents aren't listening. They grow out of it.
I am saying that The picture was hanging in the common room and not dictating that it should be there, also I can have an opinion on this thread the same as any one else and I do object to them saying that the Queen represents colonialism and the picture does not fit in with their views.
It has come to light that the decision was ultimately made by an American graduate and he wants some art or otherwise contemporary arts on the walls.
Perhaps as he does not like our Queen someone can send him a well done portrait of Donald Trump.
You said that if they didn't want the picture to be there they should leave the university!
How do you know that the American graduate want a picture of Trump? Or, for that matter that he doesn't like the Queen? I like yorkshire puddings, but I don't want a picture of one on my wall. I can't follow your logic in any of this.
Doodledog ; I have got better things to do than bother about university graduates and the decoration on their walls. I don't know why they don't get a dartboard they could probaly have fun with that.
I am done with this thread and have not got any more time to waste on bothering about Oxford as they certainly know nothing about me.
Growstuff we must live in parallel universes!
As a child, there was a portrait of the Queen in every public establishment I visited, from schools and hospitals to banks and post offices. There she was resplendent in her robes and 'everything was well with the world'. At least, that's how I felt.
I perhaps should have clarified that Oxford colleges are not wholly Government funded but they do accept state money so the portrait of the Queen was fully justified.
If the current tranche of MCR members vote to remove the portrait, so be it but in my opinion it shows them to be shallow, with no understanding of the monarchy, Commonwealth and without recourse to history books.
