One law for football fans?

It seems thousands of ticketless football fans are allowed to congregate in London, leaving mountains of rubbish, getting drunk and intimidating others on public transport etc, whilst a few women at a peaceful vigil for a murdered woman are arrested, handcuffed, dragged away by police. Is it one law for football fans and another for women?

I agree with those who don't understand how it all works in terms of unfair covid restrictions. Nothing against football, but we have a family wedding in a few weeks and the couple have had to cancel their band because there can be no dancing amongst their guests.

As for girls or young ladies playing football, it is on the timetable at snobby Roedean School and the school has a 5 aside football pitch. Good on them. This is the 21st century.

Oh dear. snobby Roedean School, what a distasteful expression.

I guess Ellianne will speak for herself, but I read that as meaning that Roedean is a posh school (which it is) and therefore shows that football is not the sole perogative of the “proles” (a more distasteful expression!)

Ellianne Sat 19-Jun-21 15:16:18

Apologies Kalu the word snobby was chosen as a complete opposite to others on this thread like "lower" class when talking about footballers. And pupils playing football are pupils be they boys or girls.
I do actually gave a friend who was a member of staff at Roedean, no distaste meant.

Back to the massively important title here. This is not a discussion about football versus rugby or horse-racing, or tiddly winks.

It is about massive crowds (and I don't care if they were from Scotland, Devon or Timbuctu) arriving in a very large town with a large % not vaccinated- without any social distancing, etc. In the middle of a pandemic which is far from over, and with very serious rise of a dangerous variant.

Theatres and other veneus were they can insist on proof of Covid status, and limit numbers by having on a % of seats taken, and insist on masks, etc- can't open. So why tolerate this?

Could not have said it better.

More than a few women, and where was the vigil for Julia James. Many women, girls and men over the years have been viciously murdered, but not all are as publicly mourned.

I actually have to thank Oldudders for bringing back a very happy memory of the time he mentioned in trafalger Square.

It was the anniversary of our engagement, just before our wedding and of course DH was carousing in London, when he should have been celebrating with me. I came home from my job in a bar, serving drunken Scottish louts, to a bouquet of a dozen red roses, to make up for his absence. wink

Yes football is global, it Is also called the beautiful game. I used to love going and standing in the terraces when it was allowed. The last time I attended a football match was about 2 years ago, it's now all seating.
Also I was very impressed that all those young men playing took the knee in a stand against racism. I was proud of them all. They are definatly not hooligans or thugs.

Here are some of those drunk and disorderly Scotland fans that some GNers are so angry about.

As are many things e,g. music, dance, art……

Yes, we did all of those wonderful things too!
A broad and balanced, creative curriculum! grin

What an odd response....

Anyway, I remember as a child watching the 1970 World Cup Fanny at school, learning about all the nations that were taking part etc.

Scotland wasn't in it and I do remember at the time thinking that was fair because we weren't a proper country shock I was only 8....I've moved on a bit smile

Marydoll Sat 19-Jun-21 14:18:05

Exactly what I sad to my husband Fanny There so many opportunities for learning through this. My pupils would have loved it. Excellent opportunities for writing for a start!

When I worked in a Primary School, I used to love it when big football tournaments were on, particularly the World Cup.
I would always organise sweepstakes with the kids. It was a very culturally diverse school and I'd let the kids have first dibs on their relevant country. We would talk always talk about the match that was on the night before and update the wall chart.
Sometimes we'd even watch matches in the afternoon (shock)
You can get a heck of a lot of learning opportunities out of football.
Football is also very uniting - it's a global language.

Crikey Fanny, it's a long time since I was that easily impressed grin

From your views here, it sounds as if you are well suited to each other, Ashcombe and Oldudders, I’m pleased for you both that you found each other.

Thank you! So are we!

I think you are probably right about the wind up Alegrias.

Sadly, I don't.
I think that Olddudders thinks that his anti-football views would be seen as a breath of fresh air to all of us females
('Ooh! A man who doesn't like football! What an enlightened and well educated chap!)

what a mess sad

Ashcombe Sat 19-Jun-21 13:38:33

eazybee: some people might say it has replaced religion in its significance in the lives of some people.

eazybee Sat 19-Jun-21 13:29:09

Not a disdain for football but a disdain for the idolatry with which it is regarded, which is not accorded to any other sport.
One law for football?
It was ever thus.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 19-Jun-21 13:22:25

Not all fans are hooligans these were clearing up Leicester Square this morning

JaneJudge Sat 19-Jun-21 13:04:17

My eldest son is really into football and he said he was going to go out (he lives in a city) but all the bars and pubs 'were packed' so he watched it with his friend in his kitchen!

There does seem to be a complacency around the guidelines and virus at the moment.

Galaxy Sat 19-Jun-21 12:59:45

Alegrias1 Sat 19-Jun-21 12:49:33

Someone observed that I hadn't sneered at rugby. No - because I am not aware that those fans engage in widespread anti-social behaviour.

You've obviously never been in Rose Street on the evening of the Calcutta Cup.
