Freedom of speech and freedom of assembly are two basic human rights that are built into the DNA of our country. It’s unthinkable that someone would try to restrict them. Until now.

The Government’s new Police & Crime bill gives the Police the power to limit where, when and how citizens can protest. For the first time, the Police in England and Wales, will have powers to ban a demonstration outright.

The police didn’t ask for this power and they don’t need it to maintain order.

This is being driven by a Conservative government that wants to use the law to shut down criticism of its actions.

We can’t let it happen.

Three months ago over 250 organisations, including Unlock Democracy, signed an open letter to the Home Secretary and the Secretary of State for Justice expressing profound concern and alarm about Parts 3 and 4 of the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill.
