Would the EU ever trust us and want us back???

Let's imagine the majority of people in the UK change their mind about leaving. Comes a new PM next election, who is pro EU and wants to negotiate a return, with the backing of a strong majority of the population, say 65% + -

what would the EU say?

As many headlines around the world have been saying this week- Can the UK ever be trusted again?

I agree 25Avalon. The chapter has turned and I don't think there will be any going back, certainly not as before.

Are we having a "demonstrate bullying to try to show there isn't any" competition?

There is none... but there are disagreements....as is normal.

As Euripides said you can’t step in the same river twice. Things change but I can’t see us rejoining the EU any time soon. To think otherwise is to kid yourself. The dust will settle. There will be different people and new scenarios.

That also applies to all those people who voted to leave the EU in the belief that England would regain its past glories as the ruler of a vast empire and victor in two world wars.

I'd be quite rich if I had a £1 for every time I've seen the statement "We managed before we were in the EU,/EEC.Common Market; we'll be fine when we're out of it". With absolutely no acknowledgement that the world 40+ years on from then is a completely different place.

^Can the UK ever be trusted again?^

May I turn that round?
Could we ever trust the EU if we were to rejoin?

Well put it this way.

The European Union can only function if it abides by the rules set done and agreed by all its members. It has a reputation for an absolute stickler to the rule book.

The U.K. has shown in 2 very short years that it is willing to break international law with impunity.

Who would you trust?

Oh give over whitewave ?
There is no ‘bullying’ ....(as you always say yourself when that word crops up ) it’s just disagreements on the subject.
Many posters disagree with the OP.

Do you class yourself as one of those I was alluding to?

If so perhaps we could go over the various posts that have been made that might constitute bullying or harassment.

How about the post immediately after the OP.

How would you explain that?

Maybe focus your time and energy on the many countries with appalling human rights records rather than worrying about a country like the UK.

lemongrove Mon 26-Jul-21 10:10:33

Dinah it doesn’t sit well when posters in France ( yourself included) having left the UK, constantly grumble on about the
‘State of things’ over here. Especially when all it really means is that you would love it if Corbyn had got in at the last GE and had refused to honour the referendum result. All would be sweetness and light then by your thinking I presume.

If I may quote my DH: "It's never a good idea to go back". He does mean moving home back to somewhere you had left a few years previously but it may apply in other areas.

Everything changes, you may go back but events move on, people change, you never quite fit in any more.

Callistemon Mon 26-Jul-21 10:03:07

I've asked a polite question based on my opinion that people in
other countries have so much to worry them with Covid, lockdowns, civil unrest, wars, famine, floods, wildfires that what is going on with the UK Z scarcely registers on their radar.

I'm just trying to gain a sense of perspective.
Yesterday's news on CNN Business is today's virtual fish and chip paper.

There does seem to be a few posters who post endless threads slagging off the UK & it’s government - it’s actually quite boring now.

You despise this country - ok we get it.
Maybe look for a few positives in your life and find a little happiness.

I think that you and others like you should consider your words more carefully. No one has said that they despise the UK. What we are saying is that we don't like what is happening to the UK and we are entitled to be critical of that.

It is the govt and some of the people that we are critical of, not the country itself.

As for your last sentence I am very happy and have many positives in my life and I am sure that the others who have been criticised feel the same way.

Finally, if you don't want to read these threads, then don't.

Alegrias1 Mon 26-Jul-21 10:01:45

I'm happy about that nanna8 ?

As for those saying there's no bullying, how would you describe somebody being asked what country they are in and then told to stay there because this is not their concern?

Clue - the answer is "bullying"

Hetty58 Mon 26-Jul-21 09:59:10

I just can't fathom why on Earth we'd want to rejoin the EU. I'd say 'We've left - get over it!'

nanna8 Mon 26-Jul-21 09:58:41

Alegrias1

Just to be clear - I think the xenophobia and bullying is coming from the people who call others "remoaners" and tell them to stay out of the country.

Do we still agree nanna8? Hope so smile

Yes, we do. ?

*And totally eroded the respect and trust other nations had for the UK*

The average person in the Uk couldn’t give a toss tbh, even if it is true.

Of course we do care. Many of us have relatives who live in Europe. Some of us live there ourselves. Most of us want to holiday there.

Being the reviled man or Europe is an embarrassment.

Yes, WWM. And after the fairly recent (a few months ago) repercussions of bullying, I would have thought the usual suspects would know better.

For some reason, kali2 attracts the ire of certain posters, even though kali2 ‘s opinions are no different to others, including myself.

Thread after thread shows a level of unpleasantness and bullying not given out to others of the same opinions but given out in spades to to this poster.

Those dishing it out should look to themselves and understand that bullying and nastiness only reflects badly on themselves. Other posters are reading this unpleasantness and forming an opinion about the bully’s character.

There's some suspected racism going on in another thread. I guess here it's just xenophobia and bullying. ?

Yes! Don’t agree with you that often ,Algerias1 but you are spot on with that comment. ?
