So how do we feel about Sajid Javid telling us not to ‘cower’ from Covid

Must be a huge kick in the guts to anyone who has lost someone to covid.

I was pretty purple with rage tbh. Eldest son has not been able to be vaccinated but has severe learning disabilities so is at much higher risk from Covid. He has never cowered from anything in his life - but some caution might be sensible.

Not sure what will happen if their gamble on not creating a vaccine resistant strain while massively introducing transmission doesn’t come off.

Yes Galaxy
It’s horrible isn’t it.
Like if you die, it’s because you’re not ‘a fighter’.

I agree. I've seen this a lot with spinal injuries where some who are told they won't walk again but do it's as though they have more determination than those who will never walk because of the state of their spinal cord.

Same with covid some people's bodies have been ravished lucky old javid didn't cower too it. Ridiculous.

Probably helped that Javid leads quite a rich and privileged lifestyle. As with everything else there’s still more danger from it if you’re poor and disadvantaged.

The point is there’s a huge difference between being sensible (in my view wearing a mask in crowded indoor spaces) and “cowering”. He’s the flipping health secretary for goodness sake so he should know that.

I don’t care if he’s conservative Labour or monster raving loony that was a stupid thing to tweet.
Ok the economy the economy the economy ….yes but still take reasonable care ?

Nezumi65 Sun 25-Jul-21 18:50:36

Having so many people go down with it at once isn't great for the economy either. Nor is large numbers of people with long covid - especially if they are in the young. We don't know enough yet to know just how big a gamble they're taking.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 25-Jul-21 19:51:08

Overall U.K. positive tests are down 19,000 today compared to last Sunday, still going down day on day for the last five days.

varian Sun 25-Jul-21 19:54:38

That is good news. Let's hope the downwards trend continues.

Greeneyedgirl Sun 25-Jul-21 20:03:45

We are in the middle of decent weather now, and schools have broken up so let’s hope the trend continues. Vaccination has got to be better than natural “herd immunity”.
I do wonder however how many have deleted the govt covid app, or are just not testing when ill because they don’t want to isolate.

Nezumi65 Sun 25-Jul-21 20:18:27

Wait and see next week. 25,000 PCR test results are currently missing. I know people who had tests last week seem to be waiting a lot longer than my son had to wait when he had Covid a month ago.

Nezumi65 Sun 25-Jul-21 20:18:51

(By missing I mean the results have not been reported yet).

Nezumi65 Sun 25-Jul-21 20:21:02

My son has deleted the app because it was pinging him every time he went to work - he had Covid last month so assume it’s unlikely he has it again. He takes lateral flows twice a week.

My son’s support team cannot isolate for pings from the app - we do not have enough staff. They isolate if contacted by track and trace as a known close contact. The obviously puts my son at increased risk
Of transmission but not sure what the other options are. We can’t magic up staff.

Nezumi65 Sun 25-Jul-21 20:25:43

Two different sons obviously

MayBee70 Sun 25-Jul-21 20:30:01

People I know are saying they’ve never known so many people with covid till now. So what’s going on? How can infections be going down?

Nezumi65 Sun 25-Jul-21 20:40:22

When my middle son had Covid last month I posted his postal PCR and it came back within 24 hours.

Last week friends were not receiving results after 5 days. Lateral flow tests were not available from pick up spots. It may be due to sheer numbers or could be because so many laboratory staff were isolating. If you dig into the figures there are a lot of missing PCR test reports (presumably still stuck in the system). Weekends & Mondays always down so latter half of next week may be a better indication.

Later part of last week (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday) positive numbers are considerably down on previous week.

Nezumi65 Sun 25-Jul-21 21:31:13

Yes I know, but test results for large numbers of PCR tests are missing - presumably because they are caught in a backlog. Need to wait for them to make it though the backlog to find out whether the numbers last week were actually low or just missing.

JaneJudge Sun 25-Jul-21 21:37:33

we are north London and our pcr tests were sent to Glasgow! it took days as you would imagine!

Nezumi65 Sun 25-Jul-21 21:40:25

FT was reporting on it www.ft.com/content/e79bf9c9-894a-4556-abb8-8ffb350831b9

I know quite a few friends who have been waiting a long tine.

Nezumi65 Sun 25-Jul-21 21:43:57

Curiouser and curiouser -
According to Peston - if you catch Covid for a second time, even if your first infection was last year you do not count as a new positive case.

That will reduce the numbers hmm Next they’ll miss out the people who catch it after vaccination hmm

In Essex GS and DiL’s PCR test results within 36 hours this week. It may be a regional problem?

GrannyGravy13 Sun 25-Jul-21 21:46:36

Just this

I think a lot of it has been regional from infection to testing and otherwise.

Nezumi65 Sun 25-Jul-21 21:54:05

Yes and if you read down you will see omitted from the dashboard.

36 hours is a leap up from the 17 hours it took for a postal test for middle son last month. Drive in the ones were even faster at the time.

Nezumi65 Sun 25-Jul-21 21:55:34

For regional variation in infection rates see here docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1yxP2s-kY8lPKJoyXvV7zcoe8xtpZlvjQdY1u8t_SE9s/preview

Infection rate down for the 5th day in a row.

Oops, sorry GG13 see you have already commented.

Best one I heard on radio yesterday was a man who got the kit but didn’t return it to the lab as he thought there was a part missing. He received a negative result ! I understand there are quite a lot of issues with various testing labs.
