Misogyny

Dominic Raab is unbelievable. He doesn’t seem to understand what misogyny means! As a person educated at Oxbridge I would expect him to have some understanding of the English language. It makes me wonder why these elite schools and universities actually teach.

And....boom! There it is, the daily swipe at the government. Well done grannies.

Galaxy Thu 07-Oct-21 12:30:39

I know shortlegs we should just shut up about misogyny, silly women.

MissAdventure Thu 07-Oct-21 12:34:13

There, there, dear.
Why not talk about knitting or something? wink

Fennel Thu 07-Oct-21 12:38:08

I just want to thank everyone prompting me to look up mysandry and mysogny . Is it from the Greek?

LynneH Thu 07-Oct-21 13:11:47

Callistemon

Lots of state school pupils go to Oxbridge.
They don't all become politicians.
Just what part of misogyny has he misunderstood?

Off to check.

The bit about it being about women

Lincslass- most of the doctors (and I know very many!), scientists and engineers- etc- I know never went to those elite Public schools, or even private, but grammar schools and even (gasp!) Comprehensives.

Yes know some from our NE local area, deprived in the official sense, one just gone to Cambridge and two to Oxford. I won’t brag who my daughter works with but some also from those elite schools. Can’t stand inverted snobbery.

ExaltedWombat Thu 07-Oct-21 13:24:56

You can't go to 'Oxbridge'. You can go to Oxford, or to Cambridge. A sin against the English language, but we know what you meant.

Yes' 'misogyny' refers to women. Using it for hatred both ways - man to woman and woman to man - is a sin against the English language. But we know what he meant.

GagaJo Thu 07-Oct-21 13:28:23

There really is no need for rudeness EW.

jenpax Thu 07-Oct-21 13:54:49

I attended a public school (private for US GN?) went to a good university
BUT I am a socialist, voted Remain and although a lawyer by trade have opted to work for a rights based charity so by no means earn mega pounds??‍♀️

MarjieM Thu 07-Oct-21 14:15:25

Head boy you say. Leader of the pack would be more suitable

Pinnywinch Thu 07-Oct-21 14:21:21

So did you go to one and know through experience or lumping everyone in the same group? Isn't that what mysoginists do when they comment on 'women'?

Caro57 Thu 07-Oct-21 14:23:02

Why are so many people so aggressive in their attitude to private education? My parents moved heaven and earth and sacrificed SO much to give my DB and I a private education because they believed (right or wrong) that it would give us the best start in life. We are both grounded realistic people who are aware of what goes on in society today

Pinnywinch Thu 07-Oct-21 14:24:08

I know a lot of people who aren't socialists and not mysoginists.
I also know people who are on a wage below basic and are mysoginistic. In fat, quite a lot of so called socialist men are mysoginists. This has nothing to do with income or politics! Some men are just mysoginists.

Pinnywinch Thu 07-Oct-21 14:26:56

Well said. It really irritates me when people associate beliefs such as mysoginist to income and politics. It has sod all to do with it. Most men I know who appear to hate women are so called working class, with no further education, so called socialist and on a low income.

MissAdventure Thu 07-Oct-21 14:29:37

grin

I suppose those of us whose parents thought like this (and "sacrificed") came from families who were grounded.

Maybe if you aren't struggling to afford it - if public school is an obvious and easy choice with easy payments etc - maybe then you aren't?

Just wondering.

He also said that the sea was closed when he was on holiday in Cyprus! His various gaffs just make him sound thick to be honest

If a white person is racist are all white people racist? Obviously not.
I'm afraid lumping everyone with a certain characteristic or upbringing in to one pot is just ridiculous, but unfortunately quite common these days - and yes, I had a private education as did my siblings. We straddle the political spectrum - so the type of education a person has, has sod all to do with their beliefs.

JaneJudge Thu 07-Oct-21 14:33:03

are you talking to yourself pinnywinch?

JaneJudge Thu 07-Oct-21 14:33:26

good question JaneJudge wink

It is but it is a fairly new word - if you count about 150 years old new, Fennel.

I agree that there are far worse things to worry about but sometimes it's good to seek a diversion.

MissAdventure Thu 07-Oct-21 14:38:50

All these new fangled words!
Reem, thicc, sick, misogyny, mysandry...
I'm well jel.

Callistemon Thu 07-Oct-21 14:43:08

We need one now for the sea being closed grin.

Mare clausum!!

MissAdventure Thu 07-Oct-21 14:45:06

Canuted (with a glottal stop)

JaneJudge Thu 07-Oct-21 14:45:30

There is nothing worse than going on holiday and the sea being closed
