Thrilled that Southend is to become a City. If only David had seen it. He's been campaigning for this for decades.

Welbeck no I don’t object to Southend being a city just wondered why.

welbeck Mon 18-Oct-21 21:12:57

i don't quite understand that last comment, 25Avalon.
do you object to southend being made a city ? it's not clear.
and there were plenty of eulogies, all day, and since friday.

“A cuddly toy called Boris” what?!!
I asked if it was good and was expecting everyone to say yes, especially if from Southend, but Idky Southend should be a city and thought there would be some eulogies.

and his throat slitting gestures.

Entirely appropriate, good to see the decision made and implemented so quickly.

Very moving speeches today, from all sides.

But Mark François' was full of anger and hate- and I think he has forgotten how he said that anti-Brexiters were signing their own death warrants. He made me feel very uncomfortable.

ditto everything Merylstreep has posted, fitting and apt in the memory of a kind, caring man who had time and conversations for everyone.

Callistemon Mon 18-Oct-21 19:57:15

Yes, a very fitting tribute to a ery popular and dedicated MP.

PollyTickle Mon 18-Oct-21 19:45:58

A fitting tribute to a good man.

MamaCaz

A fitting tribute, yes - but maybe announced a tiny bit too soon?

That was my first thought when I heard, but maybe it's just me.

If you knew how much David was loved you would understand why today with the emotions running so high it was a perfect moment.

Baggs Mon 18-Oct-21 19:23:57

I presume Amess campaigned on behalf of his constituents in Southend. Granting city status after his murder does seem like a fitting tribute in the sense that it's a positive gesture in recognition of his constituency work for which he has paid with his life.

Being a Southend girl and having met David and see him out and about all the time, to say im over the moon is putting it mildly.
I cried when Boris announced it because I know how much it meant to him.
I have to say I loved Kier Starmers speech.

I don’t see any harm in the Queen granting city status in recognition of Sir David’s desire for that to happen.

Forgive me mentioning this on this thread but, he is Mr Johnson, the PM. Not sone cuddly toy called boris

The trouble is all the papers call him Boris, and to be frank he has always encouraged it.

I agree with GermanShepherdsmum it seems a fitting tribute.

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 18-Oct-21 18:33:19

Please Franbern, at such a moment can you not refrain from passing such a comment? Show some respect whatever your political persuasion.

Blossoming Mon 18-Oct-21 18:32:56

It’s fine by me.

Franbern Mon 18-Oct-21 18:28:13

Think that City Status brings with it sums of money, so that is good for Southend
Was interesting to watch on tv the one minute silence and tributes - what I noticed was that virtually none of the MP's on the Government benches wore a mask, whilst virtually all on the Opposition benches did!!
Do we read anything into this???

A fitting tribute. He had campaigned for it. After what happened why do you feel the need to ask if it’s good?

25Avalon Mon 18-Oct-21 18:23:23

Boris has announced that the Queen has granted Southend city status in honour of Sir David Amess who had been campaigning for this. Is this good?
