I've often thought exactly this about the hair ruffling Dickens. He did it at The Royal Albert Hall for no reason, when no one was in the slightest bit watching and also on the beach in Cornwall.

... I think it's a possibility. It's become part of his 'persona' now and, as much as I dislike the man, I don't believe he consciously decides to do the hair-ruffling for effect. I think he does it when he's thinking, or concentrating - or puzzled - whatever.

I do it myself sometimes when I'm focused on something and only notice when I pass a mirror and see what a mess I've made of my hair.

As for the way he looks in a suit - I also believe he's just unfortunate in that his body shape just doesn't do them any justice. He's the kind of man who probably looks better in a pair of jeans, suede shoes and a woolly jumper.

Larsonsmum I do believe that Boris ruffles his hair because it is going thin on top. It's like Prince Charles and his cuff link adjustments! However, discussing the PM's appearance is not to detract from what Sunday was about; three of my uncles fought in WW1, one was at the Somme at the age of eighteen, and my dear Father and two other uncles were soldiers in WW2. They all survived, and I find the service each year so deeply moving. I am more grateful than I can ever express that so many young men gave their all so that we could live in peace, and that my DH and my sons haven't had to be involved in such horror.

Yes Dickens and Josianne you could both be right. It definitely seems to be a habit, and habits are hard to break.

Well at least he washes it , and as yet the press hasn’t shown any close ups of soup down his tie. Aren’t we fortunate in being able to ask our friends and family to delete unflattering photos?
I thought he looked ok at the cenotaph . Perhaps he’s not going buy a new coat until he’s lost some weight and that’s why it was not done up!

But without clothes on Casdon, Macron has the perfect silhouette. It's easy for his clothes to look smart.

In truth, I think what really happens is that he washes it in the shower each day and possibly dries it with a hair dryer, letting it blow in all directions... then constantly ruffles it - maybe because it's a nervous 'tic', or for effect. Or both.

On the 'little man' front - in photos Macron looks a very similar height to Johnson - he's 5 foot 9 I think...that's not little is it?

I really don’t know why anyone cares what Michael Foot wore to the Cenotaph God knows how many years ago. It’s cold in November, he wore a warm coat. He’s dead now, and it’s immaterial.
As for scruffy man or little man, they’re both insults.
Incidentally I had look at some photos, kindly provided by Mr Google, and I don’t think Michael Foot looked at all scruffy, which was the accusation at the time.

Ps it has happened to me too, well, not falling down but a big wave came right over me when I was fully clothed and washing my hands on the edge. I wasn't in a smart suit as I don't have one now, more in the kind of clothes one wouldn't wear to the Cenotaph. (Think anorak)

Big difference. “Nasty little man”. Pompous little man”. Etc are commenting on their physical appearance about which, in this case, they can do nothing. Scruffy you can definitely do something about.

Micheal Foot was a disgrace at the Cenotaph in his Donkey jacket, Jeremy Corbin not much better.
As someone has posted the military are more worried about being sent to war than the way Johnston dresses.
I also say thank goodness for Harold Wilson always smartly dressed even in a Ganex and he did the country a great favour by keeping us out of the Vietnam war.
