How about being held down and having red wine poured down your throat?

Do you suppose that hurt?

But yeah, racist abuse is just name calling.hmm

No-one mentions Syria these days sad

'Sticks and stones (and bombs and bullets) may break my bones but words will never hurt me' was always a good adage.

I'll wait for the brickbats.

Tribalism is alive and well everywhere, schoolyard gangs, football supporters, all the way to national, religious or ethnic hatred, it’s not going to go away.

The cricket controversy is about verbal comments, very often it is serious violence even genocide, all that is going on today, forgive me if I don’t get excited about the inequalities in cricket.

Of course, if we’re going back to The Old Testament (ie the Jewish Pentateuch) the Hebrews did a fair amount of persecuting, slavery and genecide too.?

theworriedwell Sun 21-Nov-21 16:38:38

In the Old Testament the Jews were kept as slaves by the Egyptians, Moses led them out of slavery so yes they were persecuted.

Calistemon Sun 21-Nov-21 16:35:30

Christianity was at first considered to be another sect of Judaism, not a separate religion..

M0nica Sun 21-Nov-21 16:17:02

Yes, I was also unaware of pre-Christian persecution.

It is possible that the Christians were as well - the earliest Christiaans were Jewish, but in the middle ages, perseccution of the jews was very much based on their involvement in the proseccution and death of Jesus Christ.

The whole of humankind are tribal, not just the Jewish people.
We have a small island near us ( canvey) some will know it ?
I don’t know if it’s still the case but it was often referred to as
2 tribes Canvey
Some on here know the Essex town, Maldon. Many years ago before it became gentrified the fishermen/bargemen considered the residents at the top end of the town almost
Ailiens.

Rafiq is now accused of inappropriate remarks to a 17 year old girl when he was 24. According to her he was drinking vodka on an aeroplane so where does that leave his ‘testimony’ about the trauma of being forced to drink red wine? I think he has experienced racist abuse but has embellished it.

He was 15 when he had alcohol poured down his throat so unlikely to be a drinker in a Muslim household. If he drank later that was up to him but nothing to do with abuse when he was a child.

theworriedwell Sun 21-Nov-21 15:27:31

I think it would be hard for anyone on here, or elsewhere, to show how they or their ancestors were directly disadvantaged by the Romans.

My husband, and many like him, can show you the plantation where his ancestors were slaves he can tell you the name of the man who raped his great great grandmother and fathered his great grandfather, a child he kept as a slave. You can visit the slave castle in West Africa where his ancestors (well some of them) started their journey to the new world.

The Roman invasion also did positive things, roads, towns, a written history. I don't think slavery did anything positive for the Africans who were taken or the ones left behind.

That is why reparations are different.

Queen Esther saves the Jews from genocide, in Persia after the evil Haman plans to kill all Jews, may not be historically true but even if based partially on history that is a pre Christian plan to kill the Jews

Thanks.

I didn't know for certain if there was anything pre christian persecution so glad to be corrected.

maddyone Sun 21-Nov-21 15:20:11

The Jews were disliked long before Pontus Pilate. Then again, the area was tribal and the Jews were one such tribe. All the tribes were constantly disliked by one another.

M0nica Sun 21-Nov-21 15:15:44

Aveline The jews were hated because they were held responsible for the death of Jesus Christ.

In fact it was an Italian called Pontius Pilate who made the decision to hand him over to the Jews to do as they willed.

All religions excoriate those who persecute and kill their prophets.

Since the dawn of time, when any group has had the opportunity to takeover and dominate another group they have done it. Obviously if the subjugated group looks different to you then it makes it easier to recognise them and discriminate, but going back tot he earliest middle eastern empires, Chinese, African, South American, if one group can be topdog they make sure they are.

The British Empire is merely one of the latest dominant empires that has ceumbled. Our place was taken over, briefly, by the USA but now lies firmly in the hands of the Chinese, who started by invading and conquering Tibet and erasing its long Buddhist culture and are now working hard at ethnically cleansing the Uihgur. They are establishing their dominance in Africa by tieing African countries to deals that tie economic advance and loans to these countries tieing themselves tightly to China and its economic policies and the Chinese will prove far more oppressive and far more difficult to escape from than the British Empire and do far mor damage to these countries and their people.

By the way. Why are we not demanding reparations from Italians for all the damage and oppression meted out on Britain by the Romans?

Quite so Monica. I agree - including the last paragraph!

We were in wonderful Uganda on a safari holiday just before Covid and saw the way the Chinese are insinuating themselves into the country. Generously building roads (quite good ones) in return for oil. Of course the roads will help them export the oil. Our guide was very dubious as to how good the deal was.

I've never understood what it was about Jews that has made them so unpopular throughout the ages.

History has been recorded for many thousands of years. Apart from the Jewish narrative that records the enslavement of Jews by the Egyptians I don't recall any anti Semitic narratives until the coming of christianity.

Jews were sold as slaves by the Romans.

maddyone Sun 21-Nov-21 10:28:19

I’m afraid I disagree with you Maizie.

MaizieD Sun 21-Nov-21 10:23:30

^…..anti Semitic has been endemic from recorded history.^

Indeed it has, and it’s been wrong from the start of history. Anti Semitism led directly to the Holocaust.

Has it?

History has been recorded for many thousands of years. Apart from the Jewish narrative that records the enslavement of Jews by the Egyptians I don't recall any anti Semitic narratives until the coming of christianity.

I'm wondering, too, whether enslaving a group of people is quite the same as being 'anti' them. 'Anti' always seems to me to imply that one would rather something didn't exist. You very much need a population to exist if you want to exploit them.

LEWIS HAMILTON HAS A KNIGHTHOOD.

Sorry, was I shouting?

Witzend Sun 21-Nov-21 09:19:19

Gabrielle56

All the filth crawling out of the woodwork now in sport and elsewhere illustrates just how childish immature and spoiled they all are!! Remember Freddy Flintoff getting blasted at downing Street and disgracing himself and team? And it continues to get a laugh! Why?? Deeply unfunny. And strange that Lewis Hamilton one of our top achieving world record smashing absolutely darling low key heroes gets?...........a paltry MBE!!! no knighthood? Well it's not cos he's not quite good enough at what he does is it?

In Lewis Hamilton’s case, I suppose it couldn’t possibly be because he’s chosen to be domiciled elsewhere, so that he won’t have to part with any of his loadsamoney to the U.K. taxman?
Presumably this is still the case - I haven’t heard otherwise,

IMO very rich Brits who choose to be domiciled elsewhere for tax purposes shouldn’t be awarded any honours at all.

Aveline Sun 21-Nov-21 09:02:24

Very interesting analysis M0nica
