Stand off drowning migrants and report – or face prosecution, sailors warned

I can hardly believe what I'm reading. Sailors being told to let people drown.

The Royal Yacht Association (RYA) has warned its members against rescuing migrants at sea amid fears they could be prosecuted and jailed for people smuggling.

The RYA has advised sailors to “stand off and report” migrants rather than rescue them in face of draft laws that would prosecute them if they saved asylum seekers from drowning and brought them ashore.

It has joined with MPs in opposing the laws, which also criminalise migrant rescue missions in the Channel by Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI) crews if they bring them to shore.

This may be the time to remind people that as we are no longer in the EU, the free movement of peoples in Europe due to Schengen is none of our business.

Why has the Telegraph started calling them smugglers?

Oh, yes, I know...for the same reason as they are trying to convince gullible people that getting rid of the people traffickers will get rid of the scrounging migrants.

What would you call these callous criminals taking thousands of € from vulnerable desperate people?

People traffickers.

What they are doing is hardly covert, is it?

I don’t think Paraic O’Brien was photo shopped when he was standing on the beach with the police car behind him while he (Paraic) was talking to the migrants getting into the boat.
Or when ( at another beach the police told him that ^they have gone, you’ve missed them^

What do you think they should have done? Two policemen or 4 at a push? How many migrants? Thirty or forty. Traffickers, well a few. We know some of the traffickers are armed as they've shot one migrant.

So tell us how do you think a couple of policemen can do anything to prevent them leaving?

Did you hear Paraic saying that he had been frisked before they would talk to him? These people aren't going to stand there and watch their dreams shatter.

My husband was a policeman, he tells the tale of when he was a 19 year old, wet behind the ears and out on his own on night duty. He "arrested" 3 men and then as they laughed he realised there was no way he could actually get 3 of them to the station, he could handcuff one of them but what to do with the others? So 2 policemen against 40 or 50? Short of opening fire on them there isn't anything they can do.

are you actually saying that what is happening now is not linked to Brexit?

Are you denying that the country is currently much less crowded than it was 2 years ago, for a variety of reasons?

You might find it more satisfying to go and bash your head against a brick wall.

“Smugglers shot a scared migrant in the kneecaps after he refused to board a boat on the same night 27 people died trying to cross the English Channel.

Volunteers in the Calais jungle migrant camp rushed to the aid of a 20-year-old man who was “quickly losing a lot of blood” after a smuggler became frustrated at his refusal to board the vessel and drew a gun on him.

The smuggler felt he had “lost out on easy money,” volunteers said, as the gangs are believed to only receive the full fee for transporting migrants once they have arrived in the UK. The assailant is on the run, according to French media reports.“

This, just now in the Telegraph illustrates well what a hugely organised and lucrative business people trafficking actually is. Like drugs just a different commodity.

Perhaps it is just too easy to get across Europe with Schengen? Maybe it’s time to reintroduce borders and checks across Europe?

Whatever, law enforcement across Europe and here needs to up the game. These gangsters buying rubber inflatables in Germany & Belgium, are running rings around all of us. So much money is exchanging hands here. They won’t give up this without a fight.

Yes, Schengen has a lot to answer for..in fact it’s been a fiasco.

lemongrove Fri 26-Nov-21 20:01:51

There are very many ‘young friends’ it seems, who all have a xenophobic view of the UK.Hmmm.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 26-Nov-21 19:51:26

Your ‘young friend’ said one of the reasons the UK needed migrants was that many thousands here had died from covid. You said you were proud of her insight. Are you now denying those statements?

Kali2 Fri 26-Nov-21 19:45:59

No, THAT is not what was said- at all. You choose to totally mis-interpret, and that is your right, of course.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 26-Nov-21 19:39:11

I seem to remember that you accused me of trying to control the forum yesterday Maizie. Is that your standard post if you don’t like what I say? If you think it’s acceptable for someone to say we need to take in migrants because thousands of UK residents have died with covid, many of whom were loved ones of GransNetters, then shame on you. Can you not understand that it is not the argument that I have a problem with but the underlying reasoning? And yes, I’m sick to the back teeth of hearing about bloody Brexit For Which I Did Not Vote, Nor Did Any Member Of My Family.

Kali2 Fri 26-Nov-21 18:42:47

Perhaps like Obama, we will have to produce our birth certificates! I can certainly produce my passport before having an 'opinion'.

Alegrias1 Fri 26-Nov-21 18:38:37

So wait a minute, wait a minute....

Complaints about Kali posting about Brexit, concerns elsewhere about people with Republican sentiments....

Maybe we should have a list of things we feel strongly about that we are allowed to post about, without incurring the criticism of sensitive posters?

Kali2 Fri 26-Nov-21 18:36:16

BTW, how many British cops do you know who speak fluent French? People with guns working in collaboration should be able to communicate effectively.

Kali I will say again that you are using Brexit as an excuse. You seem obsessed with it. Some days you identify as a member of the UK, others you identify with the EU. The consequences of Brexit upon the way in which migrants are dealt with are known to us all on here. Stop using the ‘little England’ mentality shown by some to justify Brexit to bash people on this thread who have shown no signs of being infected with it and who have expressed horror at recent events.

Kali2 is a British citizen. She's as entitled to post what she wants as you are, Gsm. Stop trying to control the forum and police people's posts.. If you don't like what she posts, don't read it. It's quite easy to do.

I have a question when will Britain, England be full up?

It looks nearly full to me, the grid locked traffic on the motorways and towns. Packed hospitals, packed gp surgeries. dentists can't take any new patients, school classrooms bursting, some children unable to get their first choice school. Houses estates like new towns being built everywhere and they all get snapped up straight away. Shortage of rental properties. The list is endless. We are fit to bursting in my opinion.

Not our part of the UK, Maudi. We don't have any problems like that.

Alegrias1 Fri 26-Nov-21 17:34:14

Well which is it?

Are we full up? No. We're the 49th most densely populated country in the world, out of 232.

Is our infrastructure lacking? Yes, because of the massive underinvestment over the last few years. Have a word with Boris.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 26-Nov-21 17:29:45

Thanks Robin.?

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 26-Nov-21 17:29:19

Not so much full up Maudi as lacking in infrastructure.
