You Couldn’t Make It Up

Heavens above! schooled in the catholic religion from an early age, we children were well aware of the crucifixion and other excruciatingly painful deaths.! I must admit in retrospect some trigger warnings wouldn't have gone amiss, better still don't tell young children about horrible deaths they are the stuff of nightmares. I reached the conclusion at an early age, when having some death recounted in our RE classes of a catholic martyr , my thoughts were "oh just say I'll become a protestant, nothing is worth this" obviously my faith was lacking even way back then. Much later on one of my children aged about 5 or 6 described the crucifixion as rather unpleasant for Jesus but then he went to a CE school and I think they rather soft peddled on much of the gore that I and my peers were subjected to.

So yes with all that in mind, I think an 18 year old should be able to cope with say "Kidnapped" without feeling too traumatised!

It follows that so many books should have warnings then - ?

So, understandably Uni's need to forewarn the little cherubs that some nasty things happen in real life. How students cope with drunken parties, drug taking, they're should have escorts everytime they go out in anyone speaks to them!

I think that the "woke" police are running out of ideas, like the storm at the weekend it will all blow over and something else will come along and be fashionable for a while. At least they are leaving the buildings and statues alone for a bit.

I recently got a streaming stick so I could watch films instead of forever buying dvds. I was shocked at how many of them seem very dystopian or violent. It's as if we've been on a continuous drip feed for years in order for it to feel 'normal'. I've always thought that the increase in violence between young people (I'm talking under the age of 18) is a result of them playing 'shoot em up' type computer games in which you kill someone and the next time you start the game, they are alive again.

Who remembers when Mary Whitehouse complained about the violence in the Tom and Jerry cartoons???

That was just draft guidelines on the choice of sentencing by judges, 4allweknow, based on research showing that the brain does not reach full maturity until 25 or 30. the full range of sentencing was to remain available to judges, but a custodial sentence should only be imposed on a young person if the judge was satisfied that no other sentence was appropriate.
I can't at the moment find any facts on whether the draft was accepted, but I would have thought that all judges would already have considered the age and apparent maturity of an offender, and the appropriateness of prison among hardened criminals when sentencing them.

In Scotland people are classed as adults at several different ages, depending on the context, but for most things it is 16. It is definitely NOT the case that they have to wait until 25 to vote, have sex, sign contracts, get married, fight and die in the armed forces, etc etc etc

Edith81, what I remember Mary Whitehouse complaining about was child abuse and 'snuff porn'.

Some people on here are so gullible they believe everything they read / hear on Facebook without a question. There is also such a lack of empathy or sensitivity concerning genuine issues some may have. You may have all grown up with Enid Blyton but kids these days are exposed to so much explicit and dangerous material that surely we should be made aware of this?

This is what I've been saying all along. Unless we have a context for any of this it is meaningless. A bit like the story about being fined £5000 for wearing a Christmas jumper, without the full facts people who just believe the headline could end up with egg on their faces.

We’re ‘educating’ a generation of people not ready for the real world. Some years ago I worked at a university and one of my tasks was photocopying bus timetables for students who were helping out at local schools. I had a 13 & 14 year old at home who knew how to phone bus line/navigate time timetables to get around but the so called most intelligent cohort of 19/20 year olds couldn’t get to grips with it and needed molly coddling all the way

All those 18/19/20/21 year olds who massed in the trenches……. climbed aboard their ships….. and sat in their planes , while the enemy threw everything it could at them!!! Did they get a warning that their ‘sensitivities’ were in danger. Let’s hope this country never has to fight another war…..
