If cocaine residue is found then the next logical step is drug testing, in any business/organisation

And yet, the most harmful drug to society is alcohol!
Legal and easily accessible, even encouraged, still seen as a right of passage.
Wondering how a campaign to ban alcohol would go down!

I don't think that the house of commons can be treated like any other office type job.
These people are decision makers on others' lives.
It's reasonable to them not to be ingesting drugs or drink during work hours.

There are bars in the House of Commons, in the Scottish Parliament
All subsidised by the taxpayer.

There is a bar in the Senedd but rules are stricter there.

And last week there was a report into football (Euro 2020 that was played this summer - a year late because of Covid) saying there was a cocaine and drug problem at football. Thuggish behaviour. Is that what’s meant by being ‘coked up’? A feeling of invincibility and power. I think it’s pretty scary, whoever is taking it.

When I read for example of a man intervening in a fight who then gets set upon, kicked and sometimes killed for his trouble that’s scary. Thugs nowadays seem to have no ‘off’ switch. They seem to have superhuman strength.

I wouldn’t say boo to a goose if out and about nowadays and witnessing aggressive behaviour. My first thought would always be ‘what are they on?’. A sad indictment of our times.

I agree with GG13 and the others who say we shouldn't be trying to associate this with any political party. The issue for me is that an illegal activity was taking place in the Houses of Commons. now whether you think it happens everywhere, or drink is worse, or anything along those lines, it doesn't change the fact that its illegal.

The Gove video - I won't share it as that is perpetuating it and he might just have had an off day. But search online for Gove accused of being ‘drunk or on drugs’ and you'll see its not made up. If you can get over your distaste for Googling, that is.

Didn’t Dame Cressida Dick point out a few months ago that middle class London dinner parties were driving the demand and fuelling the teenage gangs and the county lines? Sadly I don’t think we can put this genie back in the bottle now. Apparently cocaine use is endemic. Didn’t samples of sewage in London reveal the highest level of cocaine in Europe? Feel sure I read that too somewhere, ages ago.

Of course any industry that has safety at the forefront ( rail, transport generally and construction etc) will be very much invested in alcohol and drug testing, but not the general workforce, offices and so on and not even NHS as far as I know.

He has admitted to taking drugs when he was a young journalist and I'll take a bet that many people in public office had done the same in their youth.

As his government is amongst this demographic, perhaps we can look forward to seeing fewer raids on social care budgets.

I know that transport companies have drug testing.
I know that some of my friends in care work are drug tested, and I know that train drivers are.
Obviously I'm not the minister for work, so my knowledge is small minute but it's wrong to think the poor old house of commons would be being singled out.

Almost every workplace I know has drug testing.

Random drug testing in any workplace would be seen as an affront, quite rightly.Why should MP’s and civil servants and other workers in the HOC buildings have to be subject to that when it doesn’t happen to others?

I don't agree with you about it's affects, and I do not think anyone should be drinking or taking drugs during their working day.

Regular, random drug testing for a start.
That would stop little happening in the house of commons.
