Well done the Queen.

Most years, the Queen invites her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to join her at Buckingham Palace for a festive party.

But a Buckingham Palace source confirmed she had called off the royal gathering, because it could put too many people’s Christmas arrangements at risk.

Didn't it used to be treasonable to discuss the death of the monarch? I think it's still unbelievably bad taste to do so, about anybody.

And this from a repubican. Maybe it's because I'm a republican. ?

Why is it a threat ?

Ladyleftfieldlover Sat 18-Dec-21 08:08:37

Sadly I think this will be HMQ’s last Christmas. She is looking extremely frail. I do hope Charles doesn’t call himself George VII, which he has threatened to do, that would be silly.

She’s a very frail looking little old lady now and probably hasn’t the umph for holding a big family gathering after losing her husband and being ill herself ..but I guess it looks good to say she’s leading the way ??

It must be so dull doing the same thing every year!

I love the idea of Balmoral as a summer holiday home. Most people's summer holiday home is a caravan...grin

Sorry the last post was a reply to this by Alegrias1.

Me too. My extended family would be a bit squashed in my holiday home.

Oh Mr Pilot, what shall I do?
You’ve flown me to Balmoral
Now that simply will not do
You know it should be Sandringham
I go there every year
So, Gransnet members
Have I made myself quite clear?

MayBeMaw Fri 17-Dec-21 22:04:09

Has anybody informed the Queen that she is to go to Sandringham when she might have been reading the paper which said she goes to Balmoral?
??“ Oh Mr. Porter, what shall I do?
I want to go to Birmingham
But here I am at Crewe
Take me back to London
As quickly as you can
Oh Mr. Porter what a silly girl I am.” ??

The Queen goes to Balmoral in the summer not Christmas time. Christmas is usually Sandringham but this year its Windsor where she has been billeted for several months. Makes sense for her to cancel not only for those invited but for the staff too. And, of course, The Queen herself is susceptible.

Aaaaaaargh ! This has been said….many many many times on this thread.

I think it was the right choice to protect herself, her family, and her staff.

^Don't know why she has cancelled if everyone has vaccinated. The damned government and celebrities partied all the time when everyone else was in lockdown and under a strict curfew^

Doesn’t make it right Songstress and HM is the last person to follow the sheep.

It’s called leading by example.tchsmile

She does go to Balmoral for Christmas, and will apparently be helicoptered up there later next week.

No, she doesn’t. It’s Sandringham.

Yes.....fancy not knowing that!?

Must be such a problem having so many country piles and castles!!

Aveline Fri 17-Dec-21 19:43:11

The Queen will also be being considerate of her staff.

maddyone Fri 17-Dec-21 18:35:12

sazz1 for most people these large gatherings would be impossible but the Queen has staff who do all the work and she only has to turn up and eat her lunch. I know she enjoys these gatherings and she will be very disappointed that this traditional extended family lunch is unable to take place, but this is only one of many families across the country this year who will be unable to meet up as usual.

sazz1 Fri 17-Dec-21 18:06:06

Tbh at her age I would have thought these large gatherings are too much. That goes for anyone at that age. I think close family only eg her children is plenty regardless of whether royalty or anyone else.

annodomini the royals spend Christmas at Sandringham, not Balmoral.

Lucca I’d love to know what the Queen thinks, or has thought of many of our Prime Ministers but she’s far too professional to ever let it be known. It’s rumoured that she disliked Margaret Thatcher, but I’ve never heard anything about any of the others. I’d give more than a penny for her thoughts on BJ but I guess we’ll never know. I’d like even more to know what she thought of Donald Trump, and a number of other foreign dignitaries.

Hmm....yerse..... "That woman" ........?

Mummer Fri 17-Dec-21 17:35:30

I would think she'd rather just have a small gathering of her kids minus the idiot one GK and GGK .it could very well be her last, truth. She's lead by example as she usually does.

Aveline Fri 17-Dec-21 17:31:20

We'd all like to 'get back to normal' but life just isn't normal. Covid can't just be wished away. I'm glad that the Queen, unlike some others, understands this too.
