Actually many businesses in NI are benefitting from remaining in the single market and don’t want to align with the U.K., which will disadvantage them. The DUP are just driven by a religious / political ideology which the majority in NI don’t share, plus Sinn Fein look like they will be the majority party in NI very soon.

They like both markets, but 70% of NI trade is with the U.K., not the EU. The protocol, which should never have been signed, was to protect Irish economy , the single market and as a punishment for the U.K. for daring to leave.

Shame on the EU for protecting the inetgrity of the single market and and the economy of one of it's members states.

You have your view, I have mine. Funny anyone else annexing part of another country would not sit well with many on here, and yet they are not bothered about this.

No we seem to have the same view that the EU is protecting the integrity of the single market and the economy of one of its member states. I agreed with you.

We just have a different opinion of whether that is a good or bad thing. Why do you think the EU should not protect its structures and members?

Kali2 Thu 03-Feb-22 08:55:59

Didn't Johnson give the DUP lots of money to get them on board the Deal?

Alegrias1 Thu 03-Feb-22 08:47:41

The myth that the EU annexed NI is almost as bad as the Saville one.

Kali2 Thu 03-Feb-22 08:36:51

Do countries that are 'annexed' or 'invaded' willingly negotiate a Deal and International Treaty that they agree to this?

Seems the DUP have had enough. Arlene Foster said it’s an untenable situation. Over to you EU. If you want a border ...

Breaking an international agreement is no light matter.

But then when did that ever stop this dreadful government?

vegansrock Thu 03-Feb-22 07:39:58

Yes both parties signed it Nikdumpling but it was wholly driven by the U.K. and the EU are perfectly entitled to insisting the treaty being adhered to and not just chopped and changed at the whim of the U.K.

Kali2 Thu 03-Feb-22 07:30:47

If the UK was not happy about this, they should NOT have signed.

Kali2 Thu 03-Feb-22 07:30:21

Of course it did- the Deal was perfectly clear and transparent to both sides- checks would have to take place some place between UK and EU, and is the case between any non-EU or EEA and EU. Crystal clear- Johnson knew full well, and so did the DUP. But they signed, and said it was the Best Deal Ever!

NfkDumpling Thu 03-Feb-22 07:22:15

I bet they won't though Kali2. Any more than our government will. Although I wish one of them would, just to get some sort of movement!

And did the deal not involve the EU? Surely both sides signed and agreed it and so both are equally responsible?

Kali2 Thu 03-Feb-22 07:09:01

Indeed, and for the UK, as the EU would be perfectly within their rights to trigger Art 16.

Larsonsmum Thu 03-Feb-22 07:02:52

Not sure everyone is appreciating the potentially far reaching long-term implications of this for NI. Everything could escalate dreadfully if Stormont folds - respected commentators saying there could be a return of 'The Troubles'.

Kali2 Thu 03-Feb-22 06:55:52

Just seen the other thread 'wisdom, what is it' - and I don't know the answer,

but THIS Deal wasn't it, for sure.

Kali2 Thu 03-Feb-22 06:54:06

and so did the DUP

Kali2 Thu 03-Feb-22 06:44:57

They knew full well, absolutely and totally, what the Deal would mean for checks between either NI and Eire, or UK and NI- as checks have to be made somewhere between any non EU country and EU. That was 100% clear. But they signed, hoping they would, somehow, wriggle out of it ... and blame the EU!

à la Johnson!

vegansrock Thu 03-Feb-22 01:05:56

Because obviously Brexit has nothing to do with the U.K. - even though it’s the oven ready agreement drawn up and signed by the U.K.- plus the DUP are facing defeat so need to jump
up and make a noise about something..

GillT57 Wed 02-Feb-22 23:33:01

Why blame the EU?

Kali2 Wed 02-Feb-22 22:24:23

Not the EUs problem, but very much the UK's. Their Deal, their negotiations, their signature - their responsibility.

What would it be the EU's?

Urmstongran Wed 02-Feb-22 22:14:31

Seems the DUP have had enough. Arlene Foster said it’s an untenable situation. Over to you EU. If you want a border ...

Kali2 Wed 02-Feb-22 22:12:37

as checks between mainland UK and NI stop. Breaking not only the signed Treaty, but International Law.
