NI has done very well so far out of the Deal- much better than any other part of UK. They have so much to lose now.

Maizie In a way, Oborne is right about Johnson. His only political aim is to keep himself in power, so he gives hand outs and privileges to his mates and those spineless enough to care more about their own careers than any common good. He has no political ideology, in the way you or I understand it, but he understand political systems, so that he stays in control. He's not done a bad job of that so far, without caring one jot about the people he's supposed to be governing or the laws by which he's supposed to be abiding.

The GFA was always very fragile and has survived on goodwill. Like Schrödinger's cat, it will only take a slight change to destroy it.

So many many people before the referendum were asking "What Northern Ireland?" but there never was an answer.

Ug says gaily that if the EU want a border they will have to implement it. Well, as the 'EU' is a set of rules, not a country, it would have to be the EU member state that has a border with the UK. Which happens to be, guess who? Ireland.

And what would happen if Ireland were to set up a hard border between them and NI?

It's so bloody obvious that a child should be able to understand it but the Leavers insist on ignoring the obvious in favour of magical thinking.

The NI people seem, on the whole to be perfectly happy with still being in the SM. It's just the 'more British than the mainland British' DUP don't like to be different...

And the man size toddler in No 10 is no doubt claiming that 'nobody told him that the WA would entail a customs border in the Irish Sea'

(I'm still reeling from Peter Oborne's statement in the video that he has a really good political brain...)

If the UK does not follow the agreed rules the EU will impose sanctions on the UK that is going to hurt everyone. The NI assembly can say whatever they want but it is a UK issue, it may be that direct rule is the only option.
The DUP has never been reasonable in any negotiations, maybe their days are numbered!.

Direct rule won't solve the border issue.

The DUP took the bribe money to prop up Theresa May in the HoC as she didn’t have a majority government at the time.

It was nothing to do with the Withdrawal Agreement! The DUP did NOT support the deal. They voted against it.

Which is why they are fed up now. They feel there has been no progress in negotiations and have lobbed in a hand grenade.

Of course, it has something to do with the Withdrawal Agreement. The bottom line for the DUP is that it doesn't want to get closer to the Republic, so it's blatantly obvious that it didn't like the Withdrawal Agreement, which leaves an open border across the island of Ireland. The DUP needs to remember that the majority in NI voted to remain in the EU.

Frankly, I couldn't give a monkeys if the DUP is miffed. Maybe they'd like to come up with a solution which doesn't create a border with the Republic, thereby destroying the GFA. I bet they can't. There can't be progress in negotiations because there is no solution. They want their own way and, frankly, should be treated like all toddlers having a hissy fit.

As someone just said and this applies to their sister party in Westminster as much as the DUP

Eventually political parties will learn that promoting their own interests ahead of the voters interest isn’t viable in the long term, (or hopefully the short-term)

One thing is for certain, Biden has told this government that USA will not countenance anything that will risk the GFA, but as we now all know, Johnson will throw anything on the bonfire to protect himself. A child could see that there is no way there could be both an open border between NI and the Republic as there was pre-Brexit and in accordance with the GFA, and an open border now with the Republic being in the EU. It is yet another Emperor's New Suit of Clothes situation, so stunningly obvious that nobody sees it.

I expect she couldn't come up with any other retort.

What I find so bloody frustrating is that all this was discussed in minute detail before the referendum, and we all knew exactly the issues and insoluble problems.

None of it is surprising, and yet the DUP, leavers, government etc, continually reinvent the wheel apparently having been taken totally unawares of the problems.

I don't agree with Whitwave. Some of us were asking questions about Northern Ireland, but those supporting Brexit refused to discuss. They didn't consider it an issue in their quest for some mythical sovereignty. Northern Ireland voted to remain, but their wishes weren't even considered.
