Charles can ‘do a Corbyn’ ‘I was there but I don’t know if I was involved ‘, a wreath laying ceremony to terrorists who had murdered an Israeli Olympic team

Oh dear. I am not a royalist, but I do hope not. On top of all the government shinnanegans we really don’t need this.

If we lose faith in all the institutions that bind our society, I worry about where it will lead.

In September 2021, it was reported in the press that Prince Charles had been arranging for honours to be awarded to people who donated to his charities.

"The evidence provided was clear, namely a letter in which Mr Fawcett explicitly links cash donations to a knighthood. It is difficult to understand how Fawcett could make such promises without the explicit involvement of Prince Charles."

So Charles is up to his neck in it.

As this was known about before Christmas, I am suspicious as to why The Met has now decided to investigate?

More fodder for conspiracy theorists…

I agree. My first thought, when noticing the timing of this resurrection, was what more has the Met got to hide.

Of course, it may all be above board ... ...

whatever happened to, with great power comes great responsibility

Doodledog Thu 17-Feb-22 09:19:03

The timing is interesting, yes. I don’t know whether it is Cressida Dick clearing her desk, or someone wanting to stamp a ‘new broom’ on things, but it’s hard not to see it as convenient for Johnson. If Prince Charles is in the dock too, it won’t seem so bad for him. The headlines would certainly be split, anyway.

Casdon Thu 17-Feb-22 09:13:04

The Tory Party were also reported to the Met last autumn in a separate Cash for Honours case.

I think maybe now Cressida Dick has gone they are having a clear out of all the recent reported but not acted on ‘sensitive’ cases, so that one may be next. It’s good to see the Met are taking action, hopefully it bodes well for their future.

The Met has already dismissed one attempt to get them to investigate cash for honours but perhaps the public outcry over their apparent willingness to collude with the government in covering up apparent serious lawbreaking by the PM has led them to 'discover' some additional evidence...

Why question Charles, a request by letter as sent to Boris and co

What fascinates me is the timing of this. Is the Met trying for some sort of street cred? Not a chance methinks.

Oh dear, another scandal for the royal family to handle.

Doodledog Wed 16-Feb-22 23:15:06

I like the bit of the honours system where 'ordinary' people get gongs for things like fostering lots of children, or running youth clubs for 50 years - that sort of thing. I think that people who give service to the community should be honoured, and would actually like to see more of that.

I'm far less keen on the ones where already lauded types are given more rewards for things that are less obviously for the benefit of society at large.

I have no idea whether Charles would have been personally responsible for any corruption. Isn't it a bit like when someone's accountant is creative or incompetent and things go wrong? People hire others so that they don't have to think about finance or other difficult areas, and it's debatable whether they should be held to account for someone else's incompetence or criminality. If he is responsible though, the RF are in serious trouble.

The problem is that after so many scandals at 'the top' (in government and elsewhere) it is so difficult to know who or what to believe. Trust has been shattered, and it's tragic. I don't know how it's going to be regained, but until it is, the whole UK tradition of rule by consent is under threat.

I’m not a massive royalist but I’d be amazed if Prince Charles did anything wrong in this way.

But unfortunately, his wife's nephew, co-Chair of the tory party, is a 'fixer' for tory donors. He 'sold' access to his uncle by marriage...

I think we're suffering from scandal fatigue. What isn't scandalous about anything emanating from the current government?

Coastpath Wed 16-Feb-22 22:11:05

You might be right Esspee, every day there is some new sleaze, corruption or scandal and very rarely are the perpetrators held to account. Our outrage is getting stretched so far that it's run thin.

To me the honours system is one of those things that has no place in modern society.

paddyann54 Wed 16-Feb-22 22:02:45

I think the fall guy was decided months ago when this came to light.Prince Charles of course knew nothing of the offer of "honours" ....well he would say that wouldn't he? They are being knocked off their plinths like skittles ,wonder who'll be next?

Esspee Wed 16-Feb-22 21:44:24

The Met has launched an investigation into the allegations of a cash for honours scandal involving the Prince of Wales Trust.
What interests me is that this was in the newspapers this morning but hasn't been mentioned on Gransnet.
Is this an indication that we are now so thoroughly accustomed to sleaze in high places that yet another scandal doesn't warrant a mention?
