Just how does Johnson and his cabinet intend to stop Putin in his tracks? With the son of a KGB agent (Evgeny Lebedev) handed a seat in the House of Lords, the wife of one of Putin's finance ministers (Lubov Chernukhin) as a member of the mysterious advisory panel to Johnson, it could be a bit difficult I suspect.

You said we should all pay the same rate of tax. That would certainly mean many of us paying a great deal more and probably the very rich paying a great deal less. I don’t what you said was what you meant.

So you’d like to pay higher rate income tax Daisy?

I agree with WWM2, why would I complain if we all payed a fair tax?

Would you, as you seem to want to be personal about this?

So Johnson has misled the house regarding comments he made about Roman Abramovich. Legged it from parliament when confronted by it. Now having to make a statement to say he lied. Without, of course, having to use the word lied.

Continuing the divergence briefly - I would like to pay higher taxes if it would help raise children out of poverty and provide really effective and fair education, health and social services. I have always felt this way. I believe I'm not alone in this.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 23-Feb-22 10:03:11

What I would like is fair tax.

But we diverge.

"all rich Russians are crooks". Could you show me where this has been said.

I would agree that governments that do not equate and tax all income at the same rate are dishonest.

Vladimir Putin has released a video in the last 50 minutes, referring to finding a diplomatic solution.

Sanctions have ^rattled his cage^

The USA appears not to think Sanctions have rattled his cage sufficiently, GrannyGravy. They appear to be withdrawing from the diplomatic discussions. Listening to those who know about these things, there is a case for thinking that the discussions to date have just swelled Putin's view of his position in the world. This view has been fed into the Russian public.

I have said this on the other thread regarding Russia/Ukraine.

It’s a vanity project for Vladimir Putin, he has to have something significant during his presidency, something for Russians Historians to call him a great leader on the World Stage.

On the other hand I am not buying into the all rich Russians are crooks rhetoric being espoused by some of the MSM.

AGAA4 Russia appears to have an economy of between half and two thirds that of the UK. Interestingly, we have a higher percentage living in poverty.

That is interesting. I’ve never looked at anything relating to Russian socio-economy.

Putin is saying he is not worried about the sanctions, that Russia is strong financially and will cope. Is this just bluster?

DaisyAnne Wed 23-Feb-22 08:19:19

What a petty little act the Johnson government has put forward. This Dirty Parliament will not change until we change it. The man is for sale to the highest bidder; it's not as if we didn't know that. The question is, how many of his government, who have already shown a willingness to ignore the rules of our democratic parliament and the law, are of similar character?

Well if it is the case, and I very much doubt it, it will not be as a result of what Johnson has done.

It is being reported on the news Vladimir Putin ready for diplomacy

To be honest I do not care what sanctions have got to him, as long as war in Eastern Europe can be avoided.

Russian connections with the Tories, UKIP ( now the same thing ) , Dominic Cummings, Brexit etc are not news. U.K. is seen as pro Putin, and of little consequence anyway. Johnson comes across as weak and a bit of an inconsequential joke figure internationally. Freezing a few bank accounts will have no consequence.

USA and France have cancelled their meetings with Russian Foreign Minister - Lavrov.

It seems that the USA and the EU are leading the way in this.

From Clive Savage

''Imagine if in 1939 the Tory party had put a German in the House of Lords, was funded by the Conservative Friends of Germany and its leader had spent his weekends attending parties at the Italian castle of a prominent German industrialist….''

yes, just imagine!

“Tory MPs scratching their heads today at how UK went from being hardliner on Ukraine to having the some of the weakest sanctions to announce today, when reverse has been true of Germany. Something not quite lining up.”

Nothing changes.we’ve always been in the Russian financial bed so to speak.
They’ve all been at it.

This is beyond embarrassing

Reuters

LONDON, Feb 22 (Reuters) - Britain on Tuesday mistakenly assigned the address of the Russian central bank to a privately held bank with close links to Russian President Vladimir Putin that was the target of sanctions announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 22-Feb-22 18:10:53

This is our leader folks. He even lies when facing a potential war.

“No10 admit Boris Johnson 'misspoke' by claiming Roman Abramovich faces sanctions”
