Seems like the measly sanctions haven’t frightened Putin, surprise surprise. What will be our circus of a government here’s response? We need to build bridges with the EU and have a combined response with the US.That would mean a different government here, I fear, as this lot have burnt too many bridges. Can’t wait to see Liz Truss in her fur hat issuing threats.

LilacChaser yes, yes he does, and fast
This is not looking good at all. If Russia takes Ukraine, I don't think Putin will stop there. If he doesn't manage to take Ukraine he would not be able to live with the humiliation - that's where the nuclear threat would become a reality. He needs taking out.
I am signing off for today

Sky news is reporting that Ukraine and Russia set to hold negotiations at Belarusian-Ukraine border says office of President Zelensky.
I am praying for a peaceful end to this inhuman invasion. Will it involve a ceasefire? Did Sky say anything abut that?
I can't see anything coming of it. Surely Zelensky wouldn't cede any Russian control and I can't see Putin settling for less.
But, I will, like you, GG13, hope...A compromise could be the pro Russian areas to the East of Ukraine rejoining Russia and President Zelensky agreeing not to apply to join NATO?
I hope to god that they dont grab the Ukrainians
I’d absolutely love to sit in your greenhouse Jane
I’d even work out a way to bring battered cod roe with me.
It’s a good job that we live so far away, I’d be a regular greenhouse fixture

We have to stand up to Putin, what is the alternative?
I know- it is just such a sick, terrible situation. I agree with you- and then you have to take a step back and think. If standing up to Putin means all out nuclear war, will this help Ukraine?
The concept that 'tactical limited nuclear strike' could happen has made the MAD concept much much more dangerous. At least in Ye Olde Days when I used to march in demos in the 70s, marched to Molesworth and spent time at Greenham Common to try and make people realise MAD was just a very dangerous illusion- and that it would only work until one or more MAD men got involved- the MAD concept was clear. Smaller tactical weapons have made the illusion much much more dangerous.
What do you think would happen in Putin did, as some say, launch a tactical nuclear attack on one or two targets, in Ukraine or ... anyone supporting Ukraine?

We are going out for a late Sunday lunch, I will definitely have a gin and probably wine also…
I’ve just had a large glass of winemaker but it isn’t numbing enough

Putin puts his nuclear deterrent forces on high alert. This is the kind of moment we’ve feared almost my entire life. And why is he doing it? Because his wholly unnecessary invasion of Ukraine doesn’t seem to be going to plan.

It seemed to be inevitable and there's not much anyone can do about it. Putin knows exactly what he can get away with. We'll just watch it happen.
Exactly- as anything else would mean full nuclear war for all. He knows that, he has known that for a very long time.
And some of us have known it too, since the 70s- that MAD would only work until a MAD man, or two or three- gets involved.
We are now facing 2 choices- protect Ukraine or go in and be at massive risk of destroying the world. The worst possible situation to be in - Putin knows it.

What do you think will happen if we "appease"? Do you think he'll toddle off home and leave us in peace?
This is not the time for cowards.
Take him out, take out all the cowards around him and free the Russian people too.
I totally agree volver
It’s a scary time but the allies cannot let Vladimir Putin get away with this.
The more I read about Putin the more I think he actually would use nuclear weapons. He seems to have descended into an isolated, angry man who seethes with resentment at the break up of the USSR. He sounds paranoid and borderline delusional.
I wish someone would find a way to take him out from within Russia.

Russia now on full nuclear footing.
What other choice is there but to 'appease' if fighting results in the destruction of all? Please, tell me.
Katie59
If it’s true then that is a bad escalation, maybe as a reaction to large quantities on NATO weaponry accumulating in other countries.
There is no need to have a major military force for a humanitarian mission
An appeaser. Should other countries not be able to defend themselves then . It is every countries right to do so. Or are you just saying it is Russia who should be able to defend its self. . You do realise Russia has been arming themselves to the hilt over many years, they are and have been the biggest threat to the world since the endow WW11. With a madman at the helm we should all be very worried.

God it gets worse. Russia on highest nuclear alert, but there is a glimmer there are talks going ahead between Ukraine and Russia.
Everything crossed.
Yes I saw John Simpson tweeting that a few minutes ago.
(Note to self put the bloody iPad and iPhone away, I seem to be glued to them and the news feeds)
