Asda / George / Unicef

Like many of our customers and colleagues, we have been shocked by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. We’re thinking of everyone affected by the crisis – and we want to help. So, we’re donating a £1m package to support Ukrainian families displaced across Europe and the UK. We are also removing products that originate from Russia from our stores and from Asda.com.

The supermarket is providing immediate support for families forced to leave their homes in the aftermath of the Russian invasion and long-term support for Ukrainian refugees that arrive in the UK.

Here’s where it’s going:

• Pledging £100k in Asda Foundation support to national UK-based refugee support groups.

• Making Asda Foundation grants of up to £580k available to support local and grass-roots refugee groups across the UK.

• A £250k corporate donation to UNICEF to support their efforts, including the setup of a Blue Dot centre, providing a safe space for up to 5,000 children and families on the move and emergency water and hygiene kits to be deployed on the ground.

• Essential supplies including George clothing, nappies, toiletries, period products and food delivered by Asda logistics partners to a supplier site in Poland for onward distribution in Ukraine.

We’ll also help customers and colleagues to donate in store and online, to provide meaningful and practical support at home and across Europe.

We stand with Ukraine.

Well done Asda. Hope other corporations do the same.

Good, let’s hope all major businesses in the U.K. follow suit.

M&S are doing something similar in conjunction with UNICEF.
I have just set up a DD with UNICEF too, to go alongside my Oxfam and Save the Children ones. I’ve also given to the DEF.

M&S ‘suggested’ that I could change my chosen Sparks charity to a Ukraine one (it’s currently Mind). I nearly did this, but then thought again.

I’m concerned that other charities and food banks etc may / will lose out due to the war in the Ukraine.
The cost of living is going to keep on rising, exacerbated even further by the war, and so many people are going to need support.

Terribly worrying times.
We need to get rid of Putin. It’s the only way

Sainsbury's are also on board.

Theirs is a financial commitment, made through their charity partner, Comic Relief. What they've also said, though I think I might have deleted that bit, is that while Points may be donated for the relief of Ukraine, any monetary donations to Comic Relief made in store will be used for Comic Relief's purposes in the UK. Good to remember that all the other charities that need support still do.

Sainsbury’s stands united with the people of Ukraine. We’ve reviewed our product range and we’ve decided to stop selling products that are 100% sourced from Russia.

So from today, we’ll no longer sell two products: Russian Standard vodka and Karpayskiye black sunflower seeds.

We’ve also reviewed all JJ Whitley products that are currently made in Russia. Following their recent announcement of moving all production to Chorley in the UK by the end of this month, we’ll continue to sell their products and we support their decision.

And, to help support those affected by the devastating war in the Ukraine and ahead of Red Nose Day on the 18th March, we are making a donation package of £2m through our charity partner Comic Relief, which will go directly to support the Ukraine crisis. The donation will help to support people crossing the border, as well as those remaining in Ukraine, many of whom have been forced from their homes.

Firstly, we have already donated £1.5m through Comic Relief, to provide urgent support.

Secondly, we’ll be matching customer donations made through the Nectar app up to the value of £500k.

Any Nectar points donated through the app will be converted to cash and donated to support the Ukraine crisis.

Here’s a bit more about how this £2m total donation will help:
Comic Relief are working to address the immediate and urgent needs of people in crisis, by providing essential services like water, food, and medical support.
The total donation will support medium and longer-term needs, including mental health, homelessness, children's safety and ongoing violence against women and girls.

Well done Sainsbury’s. Whatever the big corporations are doing, should be better advertised.

Whilst I agree with FannyCornforth that Putin should be gone my fear is how many others are there waiting to step into the dictators shoes? Whilst shops are stopping the selling of items from Russia, how many ordinary Russians will suffer whilst Putin still lives in luxury. ? I don't have the answer but remember that some ordinary Russians are not happy with this war either.
