Sad to hear my favourite store is continuing to trade in Russia.Do you think a boycott will help them change their minds ?

Pippa22 Wed 09-Mar-22 15:24:41

Mahal, you will be doing good to your granddaughter in stopping taking her to Macdonalds as that fast food won’t be good for her. Why would you want to establish a taste for such a diet in one so young when she would enjoy something so much healthier just as much or more ?

McDs has shut up shop in Russia hasn’t it ?

All these massive multinational companies need boycotting -Read Mary Portas "Kindness Economy"

I'm disappointed in the stores that are still trading in that hateful man's country. To me, it's like they are agreeing with him over the war with Ukraine. I will not use any of them and hopefully a lot think the same as it's awful they are thinking of their profits more than the Ukrainian people.

Like Baggs being out in the sticks is very positive. I too had never heard of this shop (when did they all become stores?) despite very fashionable DD and several DGDs

Sainsbury's sent me an email saying they were no longer selling Russian vodka. I don't know if that's because I'm a regular online shopper with them or if I posted all over social media that I wish they and others would. Either way less cash in Putin's coffers.

I will endeavour not to buy from anywhere that is trading with Russia as far as I know, though how we are supposed to know who subsidiaries of larger companies are and who owns what, I do wonder?sad

GoldenAge Wed 09-Mar-22 14:35:38

Definitely boycott and take the trouble to tell the store why.

I love Uniqlo clothing, excellent quality at great prices. I agree that their clothes are not especially inspiring, but for basics IMO can’t be beaten. However……if they’re still trading in Russia I won’t be buying.

Tell a hungry Ukrainian refugee that Uniqlo clothes are a necessity.

Esspee Wed 09-Mar-22 14:05:29

Blossoming

I always thought Uniqlo was an internet purveyor of cheap tat. You live and learn.

Me too. Just looked at their website. Rather uninspiring.

How is Putin going to explain to his people that the country is bankrupt. According to a leading credit rating agency they are in imminent danger of not being able to pay their debts.

Per AP News, Reuters, etc. Coca Cola, Pepsi Cola and Estee Lauder have stopped trading in Russia. We need to be careful about what we are claiming is and is not operating in Russia. We do not want to hurt the businesses run by these companies in all other countries. People are relying on them all around the world to make a living.

MerylStreep Wed 09-Mar-22 13:42:57

7 Russian tankers have been turned away from UK ports ??????

Theoddbird Wed 09-Mar-22 13:35:56

I think Mcdonald's and Coca Cola have stopped trading in Russia now.

Gwenisgreat1 Wed 09-Mar-22 13:30:24

I do believe Holland & Barrett is owned by an Oligarch, so until I’ve proved otherwise I shan’t be purchasing from them!

kwest Wed 09-Mar-22 12:55:37

Holland and Barratt are mainly Russian owned, I read this in the Times a few days ago.

HurdyGurdy Wed 09-Mar-22 12:51:49

I read that not only has McDonald's closed their outlets in Russia, but they are continuing to pay their staff.

I don't usually have many good words for McDonald's, but if this is the case, then praise where praise is due.

I know that my small business amounts wont make much difference but if we all boycott together it can make a large difference but most of all make them aware of how people feel. I have always been very antiapartheid so would never bank with Barclays and never had - even meaning at one time I had to go to another town before computer times of course. I stuck with my priniciples and am sure Barclays dont care a fig but none of my family and many friends joined me and it is a way of showing how we feel. and at the time I specifically went into the bank and told them why and what I was doing. Once when my son was a toddler a new manager came into a small department store and moved the childrens things from the ground floor to the 1st floor without a lift or escalatator saying men did not have time to wait. Well I organised a demo, got the local paper involved stated that the men were the husbands brothers fathers of the women he was causing a problem for and of course he gave some other reason - not that I care but the childrens things were returned to ground floor. Just proves that might is not always right and we do have ways of proving this. So for those selfish people without any care about anyone else where you cannot appeal to their conscience, losing money is the best thing to hit them with. Not buying from them ourselves , passing on the information in things like local paper and local radio makes others aware of what they are doing. For me it is not just going to be a short boycott, wherever possible I will never use them again and more than 40 years of boycotting Barclays shows me what I can do when I think it matters. Hopefully things will improve for the Ukraine and it has been one very cheering and true sight to see how the british people still have that caring and good instinct, that makes you proud to be a carer for refugees. We just need to ignore the politicians who all have their own agenda but the basic goodness and caring of ordinary people is wonderful to still see. I lived abroad for some years and I can tell you that the BBC world news is one of our great assets and is trusted all over the world and now you can see once again how we are trusted to tell the truth, not what a dictator wants to be lied about. It is a star of our communications and watching brilliant bbc people giving us news from the front etc is something that Putin just cannot stop or cancel and just as in the second world war listening to the bbc was a place to get the truth , well you can bet your life that it is still being listened to and trusted to be the truth not a despot trying to invent some rubbish to give him the excuse to behave as he is doing, I wish I could do more but doing nothing would be helping the wrong people in my eyes. Doing what I can in boycotting and encourging others to do so is the best I can do right now so that is what I shall do. Power to your all to keep up the boycotts.

Uniqlo’s flag ship store is in Oxford Street London and has been there for many years. This particular store was updated circa 5 years ago. The first store opened here around 2001.

Daisend1 Wed 09-Mar-22 11:55:31

Have heard through the media that Macdonalds are closing all their outlets in the soviet union. is this hardship ?Hardly in comparison to what Ukrainian people are suffering.

WoodLane7 Wed 09-Mar-22 11:50:04

I think all companies continuing to trade with Russia should be named and shamed. I see McDonalds has now backed down and closed its stores and Starbucks the same. Coca Cola we’re still trading but faced UK stores boycotting them so have also now pulled out of Russia. If people know which stores are still trading they can make a decision about what they want to do about it on a personal basis

Purplecatlover1 Wed 09-Mar-22 11:49:20

McDonald’s and cocoa cola have pulled out of Russia.

Nan0 Wed 09-Mar-22 11:47:25

We needto reduce and stop dependence on China. Its cheap because slave labour and ignoring environmental regulations..Every company that out sourced to China needs to examine this

Gillycats Wed 09-Mar-22 11:30:14

I think companies and countries that aren’t boycotting Russia should be permanently boycotted. We have to hit Russia in every way possible. This really must be the war to end all wars. Seeing those poor people trying to escape Ukraine, especially the children, is heartbreaking. I hope we never ever have to see that happen again because of war. We can’t take up arms for them but we should do everything humanly possible to show our disgust. Economic sanctions will hurt them and hopefully the Russians will start to get the message.

Hi Doodledog. Japan is not a NATO member. I think you meant it is a global partner of NATO.
