At least Nadhim Zahawi, the education secretary, seemed to me to be embarrassed when he said it. This did not, however, stop him from repeating the lie that Russia “sees the UK as leading the co-ordination effort” for the defence of Ukraine.
This is a classic Tory attempt to paint themselves "great". Now, I do think this country and its citizens are great. But no one in their right mind thinks this government has achieved "greatness" and one look at the mess we are making of bringing refugees over here tells you they are incompetent, witless and run on a complete policy vacuum.
On a programme of experts in each of their fields, Zahawi stood out as a placeman and the impressive former Prime Minister of Denmark Helle Thorning-Schmidt was having none of it. In the special addition of QT she called him out for his Red Queen style comment saying:
"You said something that almost made me chuckle before when you said that Putin will think that the UK is leading the efforts against Russia right now. Of course it's not. The European Union is leading the effort against Russia! So I don't think they will see Boris Johnson as a particular leader in this."
Perhaps this government will finally get the message that they are fooling no one - or do some on here still believe the lies in the mini-party Russian-style political broadcasts that we have to listen to.
