Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, Oleg Deripaska and five other Russian oligarchs worth £15bn have had their assets FROZEN by the UK and are banned from travelling to Britain for having 'blood on their hands'

I have just posted on the Oligarchs thread.

Chelsea FC have been granted a special licence to continue playing football

No ticket sales allowed.

Season ticket holders only at home games.

Unclear as to details of away games.

This might be a test of just how much solidarity with Ukraine Chelsea supporters have.

What a blow for them...

Casdon Thu 10-Mar-22 11:08:47

Chelsea supporters are the same as the rest of the British population MaizieD, of course they will support Ukraine. They love their club, like all football fans do, and Roman Abramovich was a caring owner, who also loved the club whatever his other dealings. The fans will be devastated by what has happened, I really hope a resolution can be reached quickly - it’s heartbreaking for all fans if their clubs fail, you only have to look at what’s happening at Derby County at the moment to see that.

I am hoping that these frozen assets which they have courtesy of Putin are used for reparation after the war to repair the country from the damage to its infrastructure and economy.

If this is possible legally, I totally agree.

I was wondering about that WWM. The assets are just frozen at the moment, aren't they. I wonder what it would take to seize them?

Just being a bit of a cynic, Casdon. I sincerely hope you're correct.

About time!

Kim19 Thu 10-Mar-22 12:12:40

At last! I believe there are many more in the woodwork. Sooner they're in the same boat the better.

Not before time.

Why generalise that all the oligarchs are Putin supporters and possibly bank rolling his invasion of the Ukraine? There may well be some who fit that description but not all.

From what I’ve seen, if it’s correct, Roman Abramovich was up to his neck in it. Pictures of him with Putin appear to show this.

MerylStreep Fri 11-Mar-22 10:15:46

The fact that Abramovitch was able to support the club through obscene corruption seems to have passed the fans by.

You had to be a cohort of Putins to get to that position.

maddyone Fri 11-Mar-22 10:24:20

Well then Meryl we don’t want him or his money here.

MerylStreep Fri 11-Mar-22 10:31:34

If these sanctions are long going, how long is it going to take before many of our institutions are are going to suffer?
Charities
Academia
Cultural institutions
They’ve all taken the dirty money knowingly or not.

People might like to read Richard Brook's piece for Private Eye - Looting with Putin - written in the wake of the Salisbury poisonings.

Abramovich's name is there, of course, but the main thrust of the piece is that the UK's big accountancy and law firms are up to their necks in this and have been since 1989 aiding and abetting the kleptocrats.

This investigative journalist had to go to court against Hodder and Stoughton to get this book book published.
I saw him being interviewed this week, fascinating.

Just bear in mind that the fans have no choice whatsoever in who owns the club MerylStreep, and spare some sympathy for them. It’s not their fault. How can you know what they felt about Abramovich owning Chelsea? I’m sure he’s not the only British Football Club owner who obtained their money through corruption.
