Everything crossed. Nazanin has had her passport returned.

I do wish the press would leave them alone now. The three of them need private time with no intrusions.

I agree, I hope the marriage survives.

Richard Ratcliffe is an accountant, and as the wife of an accountant I can vouch for the fact that they are not as boring as they're made out to be and can be very good husbands.

One MP who had particularly been prominent in campaigning for Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s release, Tulip Siddiq, thanked all of those involved. She made a light-hearted comment that attracted laugher on all sides of the House when she said that Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s husband, Richard, had “set the bar high for all husbands”.

That has nothing to do with it. Talking or not she has had all the mental and physical stress of her imprisonment and he has been over here, keeping her name in the news, campaigning. This ordeal =, which has lasted six years will deeply affect all three of them.

Now the hard part starts. Both will have been so changed psychologically, and Nazanin will have health problems. The release of the hostage and the reunification of the family is often where the hard work starts all over again. I hope they survive it.

I understand that over the past years they have all been in contact by telephone and Skype. It’s a different situation to the Beirut hostages (Brian Keenan etc) when there was no word from them for five or six years. The Radcliffe situation is very sad but at least they could talk to one another.

I read somewhere (think it was Allison Pearson in the Telegraph) that Gabriella hasn’t had her first hair cut yet, she was ‘waiting till Mummy comes home’.

So pleased to see this family are back together again. It has been such a long time for them all.

It's wonderful that Nazanin is home. However, with regard to the payment made, there was a story going round Tehran when I lived there that when Jim Callaghan, PM at the time, visited Tehran he was presented with a list of money owed by Iran to UK companies with a request that these monies be paid without further delay.

Such good news for once!
I was pleased to see that Oman helped with negotiating her release, and that she was flown out of Iran on a private plane belonging to the Sultan.
We lived in Oman for many years and have very fond memories of both country and people.

The next time somebody starts opining on here that all MPs are the same and they're just in it for themselves, can someone bring up Tulip Siddiq please?

Good luck to all of them.

Absolutely!

Regarding the tabloids, if none of us click on their pictures or buy the papers containing unofficial pictures of them, they won't try to tell us they are hounding her for public interest.

Its up to us.

Ladyleftfieldlover Thu 17-Mar-22 09:17:23

I just hope the dreaded tabloids keep their distance.

JaneJudge Thu 17-Mar-22 09:17:08

It is wonderful news smile

The pictures of the family's reunification is the happiest story amongst the truly awful news. I hope, in spite of the awful trauma of Nazanin's imprisonment and the overwhelming worry as to whether she was ever going to be released, I hope they can somehow make up for all that lost time in going forward. Wishing the three of them and their extended family a peaceful happy life from now on.

She is home, what a relief for everyone. So lovely for her daughter. It is going to be quite an adjustment for everyone involved, I just hope the press give them space.

Let's hope she and her husband, can rebuild a life together, with their children. They certainly deserve a good life together.

Credit where it’s due to Liz Trusss’ statement, but she spoilt it with her Tweet which was headed with. a picture of…herself.

Oldwoman70 Thu 17-Mar-22 06:51:37

Lovely pictures of the family being reunited - so glad she is now safely back home. I hope they will allowed some privacy to resume a normal family life.

Kim19 Thu 17-Mar-22 06:10:55

Happy day indeed for parts of two families. It'll be a long but hopefully plain sailing journey to renewed family life for them. My heart feel warm at the prospect.

Why could the payment not have been made six years ago?

They money got caught up with the sanctions on Iran. We also had to have the agreement of the US.

Why could the payment not have been made six years ago?

Because there were concerns about what the money would be spent on - bombs for Syria or Yemen? There’s been a recent government change in Iran and they were now prepared to guarantee that it will only be used on humanitarian causes.

There’ll be no chance of little Gabriella going to bed and sleeping tonight! ❤️❤️❤️

There were reasons apparently why the debt wasn’t paid before.
Something to do with a change of regime in Iran some years ago, along with sanctions imposed on the country.

I believe there is another person allegedly wrongly held who is still imprisoned there.

I think he has been released from prison and is with family there.

The reason the money was not returned but has been in a holding account is complicated, beginning with revolution, regime change, UN and EU sanctions, etc.

Whatever the reason, taking innocent civilians hostage and keeping them there for years is absolutely horrific.

It is wonderful that Nazanin is being reunited with her husband and her daughter, but I feel slightly sorry for her parents.

It is almost certain that Nazanin will never revisit them and they may never be able to visit her here and see their daughter and grand-daughter again.

I did think of that and hope they will be all right.
