It does seem counter-productive when the Government wants to encourage the use of renewable energy and Scotland is in a good positition to produce this.

Your sympathy is noted ,however what do you think the reaction would be if England was paying almost half a billion pounds year to connect to the NATIONAL grid and Scotland was being given subsidies.?
We hear so many people on forums who believe Scotland is subsidised by England and certainly thats not the case here .Would you be happy provide power to Scotland and PAY over £400 MILLION a year for the privilege ?

Yes, well, we should be used to it by now.

But Wales is often, not always, subject to the same laws and rules as England while Scotland is not.

In this case it’s a Westminster Government decision volver.
The reality is that Wales has much less control over its own destiny than Scotland does because we have less lawmaking powers, but that doesn’t mean that what the Westminster Government does is agreed with in Wales either. I’d expected Scottish people would understand that, in fact I think most of you do.

In 2019/20[1], the Barnett block grant amounted to £32bn in Scotland, £16bn in Wales and £12bn in Northern Ireland (before adjustments to account for tax devolution). This reflects differences in population size as well as the range of devolved public services in each nation.

I don't think the Barnet formula cash you get is fair why should we in England have to send 32 billion to you.

BUT Maudi you dont ,its a part of the money we send to you ,you keep the rest as you always have done.In the last century it was allocated to Imperial sevices on the yearly accounts in WM .The Barnet formula is rightfully ours,Its Not and never was a "grant" ,it comes from the revenue raised IN Scotland .

I included Wales Casdon simply because the figures FROM the National Grid included Wales.England AND Wales receive a £30 million a YEAR subsidy for power sent to the grid ...Scotland PAYS £35 thousand shy of a HALF A BILLION every YEAR for the same service, putting power on the NATIONAL grid .
I meant no offence to Wales just posted what was said in Westminster about the situation .I know Wales is unfairly treated in other areas but this is taking unfair to a different level.

Only a part of the money included in the Barnett funding comes from Scotland. Scottish taxpayers can't hope to carry the burden of Scottish benefits payments. There just aren't enough of us. We get several thousand pounds more per head than people in England, Wales or NI. This not news.

I have tried to read around this but to be honest don't understand the nuances so I won't be commenting. I did come back on the thread to say that England and Wales had been treated as one entity in the research that had led to this story but paddyann has already covered that.

As for the whole "can't live without the English money, you're scroungers" thing, its so tiresome that I've given up even arguing. Bad enough when it comes from an inhabitant of England, but when it emanates from someone who clearly still thinks we are lucky to be "North Britons", I really haven't got the energy.
