Are the Royal Family losing their touch?

A couple of weeks ago we had the disastrous PR associated with the Caribbean tour, and now the judgement of the Queen is being questioned, for giving Prince Andrew such a prominent role in the Duke of Edinburgh's memorial service.

The position of the Royal Family depends very strongly on their acceptance by, and the support of, the public both here and overseas; are they losing that?

Me, myself and I is the Joan Armatrading song.
One of my favourites. smile

That's Joan Armatrading, I think.

Bridgeit Sat 23-Apr-22 20:18:24

Perhaps I should have said , You, myself & I

Bridgeit Sat 23-Apr-22 20:16:04

If not maybe it should be.

Isn't that a Gloria Gaynor song?

Bridgeit Sat 23-Apr-22 20:11:24

Don’t need good luck to find out about them, they are who they are as are the rest of us , You,Me & everyone …. No choice about that.

Thanks for all the information
Which I think everyone knows anyway.

But you never know - someone might have missed it!

There does seem to be a bit of a misconception about the Commonwealth. Obviously it grew out of empire and the Queen is Head of the Commonwealth. But that is a symbolic position only, and is not hereditary. Charles will be Head because the Queen let it be known that she wanted that, but William has said he thinks after that, it probably won't be him.

The Secretary General of the Commonwealth, the person who does all the work, is Baroness Scotland.

Member countries of the Commonwealth include European countries such as Malta and Cyprus, and other countries that have nothing to do with the Queen, such as India or Rwanda (how topical...) Nothing to do with royalty turning up to wave from the back of a land rover.

Good luck finding information there about how important the monarchy is. grin

Any country is free to join the commonwealth

No, they are not.
They have to be approved.

You make it sound like joining Gransnet!!
?

Grany Sat 23-Apr-22 12:32:40

Perhaps it’s time the royals stopped trying to make the Commonwealth all about them. They didn’t create it, they don’t lead it and more than 90% of its citizens don’t have the Queen as their head of state.

Any country is free to join the commonwealth

Callistemon21 Sat 23-Apr-22 12:22:09

self promoting colonialism
?

Why are more countries applying to join the benign Commonwealth of Nations, then?

Grany Sat 23-Apr-22 12:17:57

The Windsors really need to get the message that their self promoting colonialism is not only unwelcome but highly offensive. Monarchy has no place in the 21st century, it belongs in the history books #AbolishTheMonarchy #RoyalTour

It is unlikely that you would agree with any example that I would put forward.

Opinions ? Is that what you call it? Some opinions cross the line IMO. Neither useful or helpful just plain old spiteful.

For example?

MissAdventure Fri 22-Apr-22 15:55:20

They certainly are.

Oh I see. This is the Royal family bashing thread. I was looking for the Boris bashing one. Sorry. Pardon the interruption. Carry on slagging. grin

Indeed , how dare people have opinions let alone express them

maddyone Fri 22-Apr-22 11:04:44

I’ve just seen on the news that Sophie and Edward are no longer visiting Grenada on their tour. These tours are completely outdated in my opinion.

Royal Family told to avoid 'phoney sanctimony' over slavery as Edward and Sophie prepare to visit Caribbean

Ahead of Earl and Countess of Wessex's tour of the Caribbean the Antigua and Barbuda Reparations Support Commission has written an open letter criticising the Royal Family for past comments on slavery.

news.sky.com/story/royal-family-told-to-avoid-phoney-sanctimony-over-slavery-as-edward-and-sophie-prepare-to-visit-caribbean-12595484

Edward and Sophie had planned to visit Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, St Lucia, and St Vincent and the Grenadines. Of those four countries, Grenada, Antigua and St Lucia have raised issues of reparations or ditching the monarchy over recent days and weeks.

The Grenada leg of a royal tour of the Caribbean has been called off at the last minute - as the family were told by Antigua and Barbuda to avoid "phony sanctimony" over slavery.

I think even lukewarm monarchists have left the building, Aveline!

Cost of living getting higher?
Having trouble paying for ordinary expenses like heating?
Do you feel happier knowing that publicly-funded William & family have enjoyed an expensive ski holiday?

Elizabeth Windsor occupies a redundant government position. She has no power to force a law-breaking PM to resign. Her role is pointless, yet its existence blocks badly needed constitutional reforms. We must Abolish The Monarchy in order to put in place a functioning democracy.
Why do we give Elizabeth Windsor so much money

Something doesn't have to be illegal to be corrupt. The use of public office for personal gain, spending public money on private lifestyles, demanding secrecy and avoiding scrutiny are all corrupt practices we let the royals get away with time and again.
