Is there any chance that any government will take the action that's needed to avoid a climate catastrophy? Currently emissions are still rising.

I am seeing a connection here between frequent fliers, climate change denial and Brexit support. Anyone else?

volver Tue 05-Apr-22 13:38:00

Urmstongran

I wish one journalist, just one, would askBoris the following: 'If we achieve Net Zero in 2050 what affect will it have on global average temperatures?'

The answer is, none whatsoever.

Good Sir Boris of Uxbridge,

If we achieve the end to slavery by 1830, what possible good is it? The others are doing nothing to help!

If we stop putting children up chimneys, what is the point? Children in those far off foreign places still go up chimneys!

And think of the cost!

Oh no, Sir Boris, status quo, dear chap, status quo.

Ha ha! Do those of us who spend lots less than you (thousands this year in my case) on gas and electric get to fritter the difference on flights?

Aha.
However, when we’re in Spain we don’t use a car for 6 months of the year. We walk pretty much everywhere. You? I don’t own a smartphone. Nor a wood burner. I do the washing up by hand - no dishwasher. I use block soap not hand pumps. Ditto for shampoo. I do my best. No need to be nasty.

volver Tue 05-Apr-22 13:56:23

So why don't you believe in man-made climate change Urmstongran?

Urmstongran Tue 05-Apr-22 13:59:26

I’m on the fence volver as many scientists are sceptical. So, hedging my bets I do my best. But net zero? Not really.

And - hey China‼️
As of 2013, China was producing 80 billion pairs of disposable chopsticks every year, requiring a massive 20 million trees to be levelled. The trees that get chopped down include bamboo, cottonwood, spruce, and other varieties, all of which lead to increased carbon dioxide in the air.!

While many of the chopsticks are used in China, billions more are exported to Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, and the United States.

What? Are you following me from thread to thread? That's a bit creepy.

Wheniwasyourage Tue 05-Apr-22 14:02:38

Just because my neighbours drive everywhere and I never see them unless there is serious snow and they have to walk, doesn't mean that I am wrong to avoid using the car when I can walk or use the bus or the train (which is 99% of the time).

Just because some people choose to put their food waste in their general bin, doesn't mean that I am wrong to use my food waste bin, Green Cone, compost heap or wormery for mine.

Just because China and India are still using coal... Do you see where I am going with this?

volver Tue 05-Apr-22 14:02:52

No. Many scientists are not sceptical. That's just a lie misinformation.

By the way, I, of course don't have children. Hope your grandchildren are OK with the fact that you don't care if their lives aren't worth living in the future. smile

GillT57 Tue 05-Apr-22 14:04:29

Experts? Huh! They knew nothing about Brexit either.

Urmstongran Tue 05-Apr-22 14:07:54

I do care about my grandchildren. So don’t say I don’t.
These threads certainly turn nasty on a sixpence!

Opposing views aren’t encouraged it seems?
Play the ball please not the player.

volver Tue 05-Apr-22 14:12:53

No, opposing views are not encouraged when one of the views is based purely on lack of knowledge and on hubris, and is just...wrong.

And it's how I feel. The environment is f***ed and the people with a stake in the future seem content to pretend there is some dubiety about what we need to do.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 05-Apr-22 14:13:34

Some uncalled for comments on this thread, part of living in a free country is that folks are entitled to hold their own opinions.

There are scientists who disagree with man made climate change no doubt they have their reasons.

GillT57 Tue 05-Apr-22 14:15:25

No Urmstongran, this thread has not turned nasty, you have made statements which indicate that you are sceptical about what can be done about climate change and achieving net zero. Fair enough, and I share your concerns about what Britain can do versus what the developing world is doing, but you can't just accuse me of 'being nasty' because I have questioned your view. This is discussion forum, and I am expressing my view that there seems to be a link between those, like yourself, who dismissed experts and chose to vote for Brexit, and are now choosing to dismiss experts to back up your cynicism about the level of climate change, exacerbated, perhaps, by people taking frequent unneccessary flights among other things.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 05-Apr-22 14:15:49

P.S. I do agree with man made climate change, but respect others have the right to say what they think/feel.

Got a list?

Their reasons are that they are in the pay of Big Oil, or don't really understand what they are talking about. This I know for a fact.

Pantglas2 Tue 05-Apr-22 14:18:23

“What? Are you following me from thread to thread? That's a bit creepy.”

As creepy as you following Urms, Gill? Else how would you know about her flight frequency!

And the answer to my question....?

Just googled there is a list with 85 named scientists including those from America, Australia and Norway.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 05-Apr-22 14:21:45

volver for the record I do not agree with what these scientists say, but they are out there , publishing and writing papers.

Urmstongran is quite public about her life, her flat in Spain, many of us envy her! I am sure she doesn't need you to mention my gas and electric bills. How peculiar.

Ohh, I found it.

One of them I've met, at least one of them is dead and one of them is Piers Corbyn. (Not telling you which one I've met.)

The list is also 3 years old.

Pantglas2 Tue 05-Apr-22 14:28:48

Of course she is Gill, as am I, and you brought that knowledge of frequent flights onto this thread from another one... so I’m as ‘peculiar’ as you!

And you still haven’t addressed a genuine point.

Do we total up folks wastage of resources, deducting points here and there or do we stop making snide points about others choices?

Like I said, I do not agree with what they have to say, but others may well do so as they have an ology (to quote the great Maureen Lipman as Beatie)

It’s not going to be easy changing our ways, especially for those of us that have families overseas

Its quite interesting that people think saving the planet means being frugal and giving things up. The business opportunities for moving to renewables, finding new ways of doing things and so on are immense. But there are too many vested interests stopping things from moving on.

Interesting too to compare this with the thread about how politics affects scientific belief...

Agreed!
