Is there any chance that any government will take the action that's needed to avoid a climate catastrophy? Currently emissions are still rising.

Hope your grandchildren are OK with the fact that you don't care if their lives aren't worth living in the future

I do care about my grandchildren. So don’t say I don’t.
These threads certainly turn nasty on a sixpence!

Opposing views aren’t encouraged it seems?
Play the ball please not the player.

GillT57 Tue 05-Apr-22 14:04:29

Experts? Huh! They knew nothing about Brexit either.

volver Tue 05-Apr-22 14:02:52

No. Many scientists are not sceptical. That's just a lie misinformation.

By the way, I, of course don't have children. Hope your grandchildren are OK with the fact that you don't care if their lives aren't worth living in the future. smile

Just because my neighbours drive everywhere and I never see them unless there is serious snow and they have to walk, doesn't mean that I am wrong to avoid using the car when I can walk or use the bus or the train (which is 99% of the time).

Just because some people choose to put their food waste in their general bin, doesn't mean that I am wrong to use my food waste bin, Green Cone, compost heap or wormery for mine.

Just because China and India are still using coal... Do you see where I am going with this?

I am seeing a connection here between frequent fliers, climate change denial and Brexit support. Anyone else?

Ha ha! Do those of us who spend lots less than you (thousands this year in my case) on gas and electric get to fritter the difference on flights?

What? Are you following me from thread to thread? That's a bit creepy.

Urmstongran Tue 05-Apr-22 13:59:26

I’m on the fence volver as many scientists are sceptical. So, hedging my bets I do my best. But net zero? Not really.

And - hey China‼️
As of 2013, China was producing 80 billion pairs of disposable chopsticks every year, requiring a massive 20 million trees to be levelled. The trees that get chopped down include bamboo, cottonwood, spruce, and other varieties, all of which lead to increased carbon dioxide in the air.!

While many of the chopsticks are used in China, billions more are exported to Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, and the United States.

So why don't you believe in man-made climate change Urmstongran?

Aha.
However, when we’re in Spain we don’t use a car for 6 months of the year. We walk pretty much everywhere. You? I don’t own a smartphone. Nor a wood burner. I do the washing up by hand - no dishwasher. I use block soap not hand pumps. Ditto for shampoo. I do my best. No need to be nasty.

I wish one journalist, just one, would askBoris the following: 'If we achieve Net Zero in 2050 what affect will it have on global average temperatures?'

The answer is, none whatsoever.

Good Sir Boris of Uxbridge,

If we achieve the end to slavery by 1830, what possible good is it? The others are doing nothing to help!

If we stop putting children up chimneys, what is the point? Children in those far off foreign places still go up chimneys!

And think of the cost!

Oh no, Sir Boris, status quo, dear chap, status quo.

I think it's already too late. However, I did read a very interesting scientific article which suggested that in 400 years our planet earth would be doing fine but.... it would be uninhabited.

They get around, those arsonists.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/58159451

Urmstongran Tue 05-Apr-22 13:13:25

And what doesn’t get reported is that many fires are not caused by climate change but arsonists. That was definitely the case in Spain last summer. It was quoted as such by the Guardian Civil police. Many people watch these fires in say California and bush fires in Australia and don’t realise they are started by arsonists. But that rarely (if ever) gets told - it just doesn’t fit the narrative.

paddyann54 Tue 05-Apr-22 12:13:52

The Westminster government is not interested in climate change. That is self evidenced by their punishment of the Scottish renewable sector.
We are working towards net zero ..even though we are being held back by the WM government who cut the grants and who charge us ridiculous amounts to add our renewable energy to the grid.
When England and Wales are being given subsidies of £30 Million a year WHY are we paying £465 MILLION a year if not for the reason they want to discourage the industry progressing .Of course then they can say ,as they did at Christmas ,that Scotland has FAILED to reach its target , hands up we did by 2% BUT we produced enough electricity to power 97% of our needs AND supply large amounts to the rUK and other nations .
Its a political decision made by a government that is scared we'll leave and take all our wealth with us .

No burger is worth this.

McDonald's must be made accountable when it fails to prevent human rights violations or environmental harm.

We need a #GlobalGreenNewDeal that stops deforestation and protects workers' rights.

I think we need to explore different ways of disposing of the dead. Burials are not good and cremations add to global warming. Water cremation is not yet available. So what is the answer to helping the planet?

Some First Nation tribes left bodies on platforms for nature to take its course...

Whitewavemark2 Tue 05-Apr-22 11:34:04

To hell in a very hot handcart springs to mind reading some of the posts.

I truly think that the planet is done for.

volver I think that the U.K. should invest heavily in R & D of renewables, and maybe eco friendly alternatives for micro-chips along with batteries with bigger storage and a longer life before burn out

(don’t think burn out is the correct technical term but it is one widely used in our Industry for a battery which no longer recharges/hold charge)

I do not think that as a United Kingdom we should be reliant on outside power or technology wherever/whenever possible.

volver Tue 05-Apr-22 11:20:15

than relying on Russia for gas

can't seem to type any more... smile

volver Tue 05-Apr-22 11:16:46

Well I will explain that you misunderstood.

If we sit around saying we can't do anything because China are still building coal fired power stations, we will end up relying on China for renewables expertise and technology when our own oil and gas fields run dry. And that will be even worse that relying on Russia for oil.
