With Martin Lewis predicting civil unrest due to the desperation millions are feeling because of the hike in power bills, this is a national initiative which I’m going to support. You don’t have to leave your home, it’s true people power.

No, I won't - simply because it's too much hassle resetting everything, and I genuinely don't see the point of it.

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 11-Apr-22 14:36:23

Me neither. Pointless.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 11-Apr-22 14:37:01

No

Grannybags Mon 11-Apr-22 15:16:43

Can't see what difference it would make so it's a no from me too

eazybee Mon 11-Apr-22 15:34:04

Absolutely not.

I’m in. As for resetting everything, most appliances and tech stuff have a battery backup which should right things easily enough after only ten minutes. If not, it’s a small price to pay, righting a few clocks , the exercise will keep us warm.
Perhaps some of us could go for a bit longer to help prevent the surge.

I thought the surge was the whole point of this? To make a noticeable effect on the grid?

We turned everything off last night at 10pm for ten minutes and lit candles instead. Just sat there talking and fiddling with our phones for the time it took. Admittedly it did seem like a very long ten minute but it would have been better if all the houses around us had joined in.

Jaxjacky Mon 11-Apr-22 16:05:36

Sorry Casdon you’re right, I should have read it properly.

M0nica Mon 11-Apr-22 16:08:40

Yes, but as the Grid people know all about this, it isn't going to be much of a surprise and they are used to dealing with far greater surges than any this campaign could cause.

And have you considered what would happen if at any time there was a huge surge - demand or supply? What would happen is that the grid would crash and electricity supply to part or the whole of the country would ensue.

This would mean power cut off to hospitals, traffic control, street lighting and all homes, may be for hours.

The National Grid has good well laid plans on how to get the grid up and running again if it does crash for any reason, so all the chaos would be with customers who are suddenly cut off, not with the National Grid who have been preparing for just such an event for decades.

It is puerile and futile, thought up by someone who really doesn't have a clue about how the National Grid runs.

BlueBelle Mon 11-Apr-22 16:13:07

So is it 7pm or 10pm? I originally heard about it being 10pm and most of my stuff is off by then
No I don’t think I ll do it because I can’t see it making any difference and I don’t want to be in a home on my own with no lights late at night

AGAA4 Mon 11-Apr-22 16:20:03

We are trying told in lightning storms to unplug appliances. This in case of a surge in electricity which can damage these goods. I wouldn't want to be the cause of some poor unsuspecting person having their TV damaged by a sudden surge.

AGAA4 Mon 11-Apr-22 16:21:09

Cancel trying*. Mad phone.

I love this thread.

No. Futile not to say (although I will) stupid gesture.

Calendargirl Mon 11-Apr-22 17:29:55

I have read that one of the reasons for the increase in the standing charge is to compensate for all the companies who went out of business, and others had to make up the shortfall.

LauraNorderr Mon 11-Apr-22 19:20:02

Have I misunderstood? I thought the point was all the money lost to the providers in the ten minutes that millions of households switched off would make a point. I thought the surge that would follow was a worrying byproduct.
Will someone with better knowledge please explain. Thanks.

Thank you for that information Casdon.

LauraNorderr Mon 11-Apr-22 20:34:03

Thank you Casdon, all clear now and 16th is on my calendar.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 12-Apr-22 08:41:45

Thanks Casdon but still won’t be doing it.

The grid power regulators cope with very large predictable peaks in power demand, so there will be no problem for them, it’s what they do.
As for power supply companies they don’t care when you use electricity, you have a contract, you may use less per month which is good, at present energy is short, so using less helps them

Milliedog Tue 12-Apr-22 12:41:14

Some questions:
Will a huge surge in the national grid do the national grid harm?
Energy costs are spiraalling in the rest of Europe, too. Some governments have put in place measures to offset this and that's good - but after Rishi has thrown money at furlough schemes etc where is the money going to come from to offset our energy costs? There is no such thing as a magic money tree - just the tax payer!
How many of us feel so strongly that we are willing to head up a protest demanding a special tax hike to cover lower energy costs? And then be glad to pay it?
And another tax hike to cover the NHS which is on its knees?
And yet another to fund extra training places for future doctors, nurses etc?

MaizieD - we need you!!

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 12-Apr-22 12:51:20

We already know exactly what she would say, we’ve had it drilled into us so many times.

LizzieDrip Tue 12-Apr-22 12:59:49

The whole point is to make a statement - to send a message! To show unity and solidarity - things that appear to be sadly lacking in this country at the moment (even on this thread)! It might not make a difference (probably won’t) but we should never allow that defeatist attitude to silence our communal voice. Without that, society really is dead and all hope is lost!
