Queens Speech

Well, if she’s not going to read the speech now, it really is time to take stock. She doesn’t like the word abdicate, so maybe suggest a Regency. As others have said, she should really have done this when Philip retired. She isn’t making it easy for herself not using a wheelchair. Aren’t there some in the Lords who use wheel chairs - Tanni Grey Thompson? She must get in there somehow. I wonder whether she’ll attend any of her Jubilee events. If she doesn’t do the balcony or the church service, well there are no words!

Must admit, I am starting to wonder if the Palace are just working towards getting the Jubilee done and dusted, then a review of how the Queen will carry on, still don’t think any question of abdication, but a definite shift in how her duties will be carried out.

Why more money ?

I reckon the time to step down is after her jubilee celebrations and let c&c take over.

Just confirmed the Queen is not attending the State Opening tomorrow.

All buildings should be accessible to wheelchair users and this would be an opportunity to highlight this.

Thank you GN’s for comments on my wheelchair post. There are steps to her seat - so use a ramp and get HM in there first. (When my DD got her degree, there wasn’t a ramp and the chap handing the degree out had to leave the stage to give it to her). As I said, I think it would send out a positive message.

The Queen reminds me of my mum who would not contemplate a stick well into her 80s, despite mobility issues. I personally think that a planned handover to Charles would actually be a positive move. I almost feel sorry for him, hanging around his whole life. I did say almost.

Yes, but it will be different I’m sure. Charles will have spent his time waiting in the wings making lots of plans for a newish Royal future.

I’m not being flippant, but can the chair be moved to a different position with no steps? Or is it a fixture?

I agree about her using a wheelchair. What a positive image of getting older, but still carrying out her engagements.

It would seem that HM is still of sound mind, but struggling with her mobility. I’m sure this has been mentioned before but why doesn’t she use a wheelchair?
I think it would greatly help able bodied people to have an inkling how difficult life is for (some) wheelchair users - irrespective of their status) with some buildings being inaccessible and certain modes of transport being out of the question. It would also make the point that people should speak to the person in the chair, not the person pushing it!

I doubt we would be informed if she was not of sound mind.

I hope she can hang on for the jubilee, however, feel she should give up after that.

Not one of us on here would think less of the Queen if she had to use a wheelchair to deliver her speech. It would be a positive message that she really does want to devote her whole life to serving the country. If her mind is sound, then why not?

Why an embarrassment to use a wheelchair? Thousands have to, otherwise they’d be housebound. I think it would actually be a positive move.

That’s quite an assumption.

I would be happy for the Queen to make the speech via video link. She's become quite proficient at using modern technology of late. Her mind is still sound even if the body is failing a bit and I'm sure she doesn't want the embarrassment of using a wheelchair. She won't abdicate in favour of Charles and I don't think she should.
