I wonder if he was expecting to get recognised, most people don't exactly study Big Issue sellers.

They don’t shout about everything they do from the rooftops. Charity is something that should be performed quietly and privately in my book.

GrauntyHelen Mon 13-Jun-22 04:02:35

Contrary to what was being said about Royal Patronage HRH the Princess Royal is Patron of my local Hospice she visits EVERY year at least once as well as a lot of behind the scenes work

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 12-Jun-22 08:09:31

I have always bought the Big Issue if I’ve seen a seller. Haven’t we all, royalist or republican?

Glorianny Sat 11-Jun-22 19:48:52

Well I hope all the royalists on here will go out and buy the Big Issue with that article in it.

Deedaa Sat 11-Jun-22 19:47:55

Of course it will have been a good thing and raised awareness. The Big Issue was off the streets for a long time during lockdown and they need all the publicity they can get. James Bowen changed a lot of people's perception of Big Issue sellers, hopefully William's outing will get a few more to think about them.

Callistemon21 Sat 11-Jun-22 19:34:55

There's no such thing as bad publicity.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 11-Jun-22 17:21:36

Indeed volver. I believe an article is due in the next week or so. And doubtless it will satisfy Glorianny's curiosity. She'll have to buy one to find out, though.

volver Sat 11-Jun-22 17:16:43

I suspect there will be a story in an upcoming Big Issue focussing on how William took to the streets for a day to understand what it was like to sell the Big Issue. Publicity for them and more hero worship for him.

Glorianny Sat 11-Jun-22 17:08:44

No. So one well meaning young man could try to raise the profile of a charity and make a difference.

So how many more copies of the Big Issue were sold? How many new sellers were recruited? How much was raised.?
Well not many and not much. William's job is to raise money and publicise charities not stand in for the people who work for them. Is there another worker he could replace?

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 11-Jun-22 17:03:50

No. So one well meaning young man could try to raise the profile of a charity and make a difference.

Glorianny Sat 11-Jun-22 16:43:11

I just wonder how much was spent on security so he could do this. Hours checking out the Big Issue seller, checking the area, watching William. And all so one over privileged young man could play pretend for a couple of hours.

Nannan2,

I found a useful site dealing with all types of benefits claims, although I am sure you have dug into the rules yourself. I see the Conservative govt changed the rules in 2019.

Are you a Council or Housing Association tenant wanting a mutual exchange? And does that make any difference? It is a long time since I retired from local govt housing so am out of touch. I do hope you can get proper consideration in this annoying and expensive need to move.

Anniel Sat 11-Jun-22 16:10:15

Nannan2,

I am dismayed by your quandary. It is hard enough trying to improve his transport to and from College, but to lose a third of your benefits merely by moving is not fair. Is this a new rule imposed by the current government? I am sure you have tried to find ways to get around it. I know of a site called Debt Camel that helps people with anomalies in the benefit system. Is your MP worth contacting? I hate seeing cases like yours where an individual is trying to make life better for a loved one, only to be hindered by bureaucracy for doing so.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone had spotted him though. Of course it could have been meticulously planned etc etc.

I don't really care one way or another. It's definitely raised awareness of The Big Issue and I'd be interested to know if their sales increased.

I rather like this in the Daily Mash.

Somehow I doubt he would think ‘iv’e (sic) done good today’.

Not boring at all. Raising the profile of the charity. Of course he won’t be doing it every week.
What a strange thing to say.

So William was “spotted”, more like an arranged photo shoot. Also no mention of how long he was there for, half an hour, an hour or just long enough to get his picture taken?

I agree and why do it he will just go back to the castle to luxury and think iv'e done good today just another publicity stunt he won't be doing it every week what a waste of time just don't do it BORING

What was it if it wasn't a stunt?

In marketing, a publicity stunt is a planned event designed to attract the public's attention to the event's organizers or their cause.

completely agree

Course she can.

And in this free country I can ask people to avoid being so rude.

Goodness! What a horrid response from most of you. I am really shocked. Poor guy can’t do anything right.

I'd like to ask Sheila11 and anybody else so inclined to stop using adjectives like "horrid" to describe people giving their perfectly rational responses to this event.

Its a free country, and we get to criticise our leaders. Anybody calling us "horrid" or any of the rest of it needs to wind their necks in.

I don’t think Sheliall called any person horrid - just their responses which she is entitled to do. as you say, it’s free country.

a horrid response - Sheila11 was referring to some posts.
She's perfectly entitled to express an opinion on posts she may think are unpleasant.

She was not calling any posters horrid which would, of course, be against guidelines.

I don't often comment but that is an awful thing to say. I live in a small town, we have one seller, yes she is Roma, but she has 8 children and a mother in law to support. She has to use our foodbank as she doesn't earn enough. She is a lively lady who is well known in the town.

MissAdventure Fri 10-Jun-22 20:06:03

Perhaps he chose to do it, knowing it would raise these issues?
They say all publicity is good.
