“The government is determined to continue to crack down on the evil trade in such trafficking, whose perpetrators have no regard for human life," said the home secretary.

No, not Priti Patel - but Jack Straw in June 2000 when 58 migrants suffocated in the back of a lorry as they were smuggled across the English Channel.

DiamondLily:
Sweden are talking to Rwanda and Ghana about sending some of their asylum seekers there

I read the Swedish papers and have not read this. How did you find out about it?

BlueBelle Sat 11-Jun-22 19:32:24

Well I d rather a refugee was here than a racist

Zonne Sat 11-Jun-22 19:02:24

I say they come over from France. They are safe there, not persecuted. They ought to wait in line with everyone else to apply for residency in this country.

I despair. They cannot apply from France BECAUSE THE UK REFUSES TO SET UP ANY MONITORING / APPLICATION CENTRES THERE.

Please read the legislation. They can apply for asylum in their own country (which is generally impossible because if it was safe to stay there they would not be refugees) or they can apply when they reach the UK.

Those are the only two options.

Providing safe legal routes from overseas would deal with all the issues many people on this thread say they are concerned about: trafficking would become unnecessary for bona fide refugees; thus illegal immigration (ie not refugees) via channel crossings could be more effectively policed; and economic and family migrants could be steered to the appropriate visa programme for a decision.

Anyway we've yet to see the first flight take off yet to Rwanda, I'll believe it when I see it.

VioletSky Sat 11-Jun-22 18:52:28

You really dont know much about all this at all do you?

Urmstongran Sat 11-Jun-22 18:41:39

violetSky if the migrants who are not fleeing persecution but are wanting ‘a better life’ in the UK, I’m sure they can come legally? Via a visa? Like others do?

No need to pay thousands to people traffickers to be smuggled into the shores of Kent. Once word gets round (and it will) that the end destination will be Rwanda, these young men will have a choice - to stay and make their life as good as possible where they are as it’s not worth the inherent dangers to end up where they don’t want to be. Or apply legally. Come with papers.

paddyann54 Sat 11-Jun-22 18:30:59

They've paid thousands of euros to people smugglers that has been scaped together by whole families and friends in the hope they can have a better life .Maybe send some money home to help those they've left behind to make an escape too or improve the situation where they are.Its not hard to see if you can get past the young fit men thing ,the older and younger members wont be fit to undertake that journey ,,,so the ones who are ...do

VioletSky Sat 11-Jun-22 18:21:39

Honestly, if you think that being sent to a destination not of your choosing as if you have no human rights at all wont be a frightening experience then you either dont have enough empathy to understand fear or you just dont have empathy for other buman beings

Casdon Sat 11-Jun-22 18:18:30

Some people believe what they read in the Daily Mail, the Express and the Telegraph. They believe the government. They are not interested enough to find out for themselves whether they are being told the truth by reading more widely, listening to court judgements, seeing what international media reports, what expert bodies say etc.etc. I despair. It’s not us who’s being naive, a lot of us try very hard to be objective.

VioletSky Sat 11-Jun-22 18:09:56

It has not been confirmed this will only be single men, just that they will be among the first.

My son is a single man.

Urmstongran Sat 11-Jun-22 18:07:54

VioletSky I’m not denying it’s heartbreaking for some. Fleeing persecution. I get that. But you must acknowledge that not all migrants are. Some are economic migrants (nothing wrong with that either) but they’ve made choices in their mode of transportation. There’s no rush for them. They are perfectly safe in France. They won’t be the ‘frightened faces’ though that you poignantly describe to tug at my heartstrings. They are the ones dying to get here for other reasons. Literally in some cases.

Chardy Sat 11-Jun-22 18:07:19

I'm embarrassed by those saying that refugees should stay in the first country they come to. All countries have a moral obligation to take refugees, fleeing war-torn countries. Countries with a substantial armaments industry like US, UK and France have an even greater moral obligation, because they gain from war.

Lasted all of 2 minutes grin

Can't be bothered any more explaining things again to people not really interested in the truth.

Maudi Sat 11-Jun-22 18:03:48

They are fit young men who've paid thousand of euros to people smugglers don't be so naive.

Urmstongran Sat 11-Jun-22 18:02:55

Every one who is up for this should be the ones to actually do it.

Go look them in the eye, watch their tears, listen to their fears and their worries. Shake your head no when they ask you if they will ever see their families again.

Help them pack up their small belongings, tell them that the phone in their hands that holds all the connections to their previous life may no longer work.

Support them onto the transport, fly them to their unwanted unchosen destination and then turn your backs on their frightened bewildered faces in a country where they dont know the culture or speak the language.

And then come home to your privelidged life.

Lucky you

Urmstongran Sat 11-Jun-22 18:00:47

I have thank you. I watch the news on tv. I read the papers written by journalists who witness events (some horrific and sad).

Maudi Sat 11-Jun-22 17:59:25

?

volver Sat 11-Jun-22 17:57:11

Ah well. Can't be bothered looking this up either? Forgotten where you saw it?

Let me explain this to you. There are people on here who actually know what they are talking about, that provide information from authoritative sources and who have the facts and figures at their disposal, and can back them up with verified research.

And there are some people that base their attitudes on unverifiable and exaggerated ideas from unnamed sources, that bear no relation to the truth, but they still expect people to believe them.

Pick your side.

RichmondPark Sat 11-Jun-22 17:55:26

They are economic migrants who think they’ll get a better deal here in the UK.

Migrants:-
Increase our labour force
Provide labour force flexibility
Create an increase in aggregate demand and Real GDP
Have a positive effect on the dependency ratio in our ageing population.

We benefit.

Urmstongran Sat 11-Jun-22 17:52:31

You still posting volver? Thought you’d gone?

Might have been. They have articles written by individuals who write as a ‘secret’ somebody or other. They make for an interesting read. ‘Straight from the horse’s mouth’ so to speak.

Hmm. Might have been the Guardian though. I can’t remember but the job details were pretty darned illuminating.
