"Lib Dems win Tiverton and Honiton with swing of nearly 30%
The Liberal Democrats have achieved a stunning swing in taking Tiverton and Honiton from the Conservatives.

Their candidate Richard Foord overturned a Tory majority of more than 24,000 on a swing of nearly 30%.

It's the party's third gain from the Conservatives in just over a year, after victories in Chesham and Amersham and North Shropshire. The Lib Dems now have 14 MPs."

"Labour have won the by-election in Wakefield – taking back a so-called "Red Wall" seat they held for 87 years until it was a Conservative gain at the 2019 general election.

The turnout was 39%.

It’s Labour’s first by-election gain in almost 10 years, when they took Corby from the Conservatives in November 2012.

It takes the total number of Labour MPs in the House of Commons to 200. Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s majority in the Commons will fall to 68."

Johnson will go soon now, hanging on is not an option, Tory voters stayed home in droves but who to replace him. Not one of the present cabinet I’m sure, they are all tainted, someone from the junior ranks.

Casdon

And now here’s Lord Frost with the start of the spin…..

‘Both are terrible for the Conservatives, but neither is particularly good for the Lib Dems or Labour.
"In Tiverton there was some Lab/Lib switching, but their total vote as a share of the whole electorate only went up from from 25% to 29%. The Tory vote collapsed from 43% to just under 20%. Nearly 20,000 of our voters stayed at home. That's why we lost.
"In Wakefield turnout was extremely low. The Lab/Lib vote actually fell, from 28% to 20%. But the Tory vote fell even further, from 30% to 12%. That's why we lost."’

Good try Frosty.

Dominic Raab sounded very cross. Just who with though? I wonder if he has realised they are likely to be out of power for some time once they go.

Pantglas2 Fri 24-Jun-22 08:27:18

If those figures are right Casdon I’m not getting my hopes up for Lib Dems at the GE - they have a habit of winning battles and losing wars!

Iam64 Fri 24-Jun-22 08:22:31

Thanks Casdon - what nonsense these tories loyal to Johnson do spout.

Ladyleftfieldlover Fri 24-Jun-22 08:21:56

Excellent news! This has made my day.

I bet that sounded unconvincing even to him!

The Tories are not going to crawl out of this mess in a hurry even if that bare-faced liar leaves today who would take over? I would leave the country if Gove took over, I cannot stand the man.

Congratulations to them both. The Liberals are on course to be a voice to be listened to and Labour has turned that big ship around another important bit.

Like Galaxy I want Johnson to go for the country to stop moving to the right, but for now he is useful to the opposition parties.

Iam64 Fri 24-Jun-22 08:17:01

Great news to wake up to. I’m Labour in a red wall seat we know is there to be won back so this is encouraging.
Fantastic result for the LibDems

Get well white wave and galaxy

Hoo-bloody-ray!

You only have to look at the reasons for the bye-elections to get a picture of the state of the Tories.

The previous MP, Imran Ahmad, resigned after being convicted of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy.

Former MP Neil Parish quit after he was found watching pornography in the House of Commons.

And good riddance!

chelseababy Fri 24-Jun-22 08:13:44

And Jo Swinson was going to be PM!

Esspee Fri 24-Jun-22 08:13:30

Clearly the Conservatives face total annihilation at the GE unless they rid themselves of Johnson very quickly.
Self interest will prevail.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 24-Jun-22 08:09:31

Well it was what we all expected, let’s hope now that the Conservatives get a new leader.

AGAA4 Fri 24-Jun-22 08:08:21

BJ will not go. He will have to be pushed. It is up to his cronies now to get rid of him if they have any chance at the next GE.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 24-Jun-22 08:06:50

So far no one has turned up on the BBC.

BlueBelle Fri 24-Jun-22 08:01:12

Get well soon whitewave and Galaxy
Oh I m dancing to work ?????

foxie48 Fri 24-Jun-22 08:00:02

BJ's said he will listen to the voters, I think the message is pretty clear FGS do the decent thing and resign!

Grandmabatty Fri 24-Jun-22 07:57:35

If the conservative party don't get rid of Johnson now, they will face the consequences at the next general election. I don't think that he will go easily though. I expect to see some bleating about tactical voting appear next.

AGAA4 Fri 24-Jun-22 07:55:34

Johnson on BBC blaming cost of living for the losses. Nothing to do with him.

TopsyIrene06 Fri 24-Jun-22 07:53:49

Maybe not Calendargirl but it's given me a lift from the sheer misery when I thought that nobody in the cabinet would speak out. Sometimes I felt that I was imagining all the nonsense. I don't know what will happen in the future but I will enjoy today.

Joseanne Fri 24-Jun-22 07:53:12

And it's National Cream Tea day today too!
Cream first!!

Riverwalk Fri 24-Jun-22 07:53:11

I wonder if any of the Cabinet will be brave enough to resign.

Joane123 Fri 24-Jun-22 07:52:11

Great News!
