RIP The right of a woman to choose

Woman’s Hour today had an interview with an American woman who was in Malta when at 15 weeks, the placenta detached, then amniotic fluid broke. Her daughter had a heart beat but the doctors confirmed the baby would die. Malta has anti abortion laws which meant this mother could not have her pregnancy terminated despite the medics knowing the pregnancy was no longer viable and the mother’s life at risk
She travelled to Spain where her pregnancy was ended and she was treated in hospital. She’d been in hospital four days when Emma Barnett interviewed her by phone. The poor woman was emotionally and physically exhausted and grieving her lost daughter

Danny Kruger - MP for Devizes does not agree that women have an absolute right of bodily autonomy.

The ramifications of this are considerable for women's freedoms and rights. There is already discussion about the right to contraception, for example. Even more worrying, perhaps, is that some states are willing to prosecute a woman for having an abortion which has been classed as a felony. Those same states do not allow convicted felons to vote for their remaining lives.

I dont know if i am wondering or hoping...

Perhaps the extreme right wing can see the slow swing against them and are clawing to gain whatever power they can while they can...

I used to know a woman who was 'pro-life'. She just refused to see a pregnant women as anything other than a baby carrier.

I’ve been feeling really…not depressed exactly…but low and fearful for women’s future. It scares me to think of what is up ahead.

I was discussing it all with Dh earlier today, pointing out that under these laws, young girls could be forced to give birth, girls the same age as our oldest GD, who is 9yo. He was horrified at that, it brought it home to him just how repressive this is.

Honestly this has been weighing on my mind so much lately and I feel so frustrated and powerless to help.

I've just read that France is moving to add the right to abortion to its constitution. There are a lot of hoops to jump through so I will follow progress with interest.

Why? Why is "that little creature's" life more important than the mother's?

What if 'this little creature' isn't actually viable outside the mother? Say, in an ectopic pregnancy. Kill them both by refusing to let the mother have an abortion?

But would the men (maybe unscrupulous) insist they have access to the child because they are paying for their upkeep and then be given this as a right, which could a danger to the child.

That is so scary Dickens and SueDonim how can these decisions go unchallenged. Women are being excluded and degraded at every turn.

I think some of these men (and some women) have a God-complex.

Women's emancipation still has such a long way to go. We need to reach a point where men (unless they are personally affected by an abortion), don't get to make these decisions.

Or perhaps we need a national database of all men's DNA - and if they father a child and insist it's carried to term, they should then be financially responsible for that child - its education, health-care, you name it, until it can fend for itself. Clearly a ridiculous idea, but no more so that what is now being proposed in the US.

Men have go to be stopped from making these decisions and controlling women's lives.

I did read about that, Daisyanne although the author felt it could only be a holding tactic because they couldn’t get a majority for impeachment.

Just wanted to bump what may be a slight crack in what has happened in the US.

I am listening to The Context, a programme I like more and more (BBC 9.00 p.m.)

There is a discussion about the fact that three of the Judges may have committed purgery. They were under oath during their confirmation hearings. Statements made by them during their respective confirmation hearings suggested that they would, if confirmed, honour precedent or not reconsider matters thought to be so-called "settled law".

It will be interesting to see if this can be used to reverse the change their government did not vote for.

I imagine we will hear more about this.
