How does he know what shape we will be in economically by 2029?

Katie59 Mon 01-Aug-22 07:31:49

Sunak has now promised a 20% tax cut by the end of the next parliament (2029.
I simply don’t believe it will happen in the unlike event that the Tories win the next GE.

^Who was it in Gransnet who coined "the lesser of two weevils"^

I think it's nicked from Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin series. It might even be an ancient Naval joke... ?

Thank you! I hadn't heard of him, and I think I would enjoy his books ?

MaizieD Sun 31-Jul-22 23:08:06

Please don't give me nightmares with your Cabinet predictions, Casdon. shock

Worse case scenario, she could appoint Nadine Dorries as Foreign Secretary (to be fair, she does live on another planet), and Jacob Smogg as Home Secretary. Maybe Grant Shapps as Chancellor?

Farzanah Sun 31-Jul-22 21:34:20

That is my biggest concern Galaxy.

Galaxy Sun 31-Jul-22 21:09:27

I know but is it not short term negative for long term positive. I suppose theres the risk she could declare war on Russia or something.

MayBee70 Sun 31-Jul-22 20:55:31

He is. And even though I want a Labour government I still want what’s best for the country. Alas that’s the last thing that the current government thinks about.

Iam64 Sun 31-Jul-22 20:29:25

I agree with you Ailidh - Sunak the lesser of 2 evils

Ailidh Sun 31-Jul-22 18:20:53

Completely disgusted!

I hope that has lost Liz Truss, who supported Johnson throughout, a lot of points in the popularity polls.

At least Rishi Sunak recognized Johnson had to go. At least he hasn't rubbished his upbringing.

Who was it in Gransnet who coined "the lesser of two weevils"? By a very long way, Rishi Sunak is definitely the lesser.

Surely Nadine Dorries epitomises the lowest common denominator populist politician. She is unbelievably crass and stupid.

He was the only one that said Johnson was a liar. And yet he’s supporting the person who didn’t resign and won’t say anything against Johnson. I’m appalled.

Farzanah Sat 30-Jul-22 19:59:23

Yes MayBee voting record in the past is the best predictor of future behaviour.

It's what Johnson called "the Herd"

Ben Wallace has said today that he is supporting Liz Truss, so I guess that's that then. Oh dear.

And now Tom Tugendhat. And there was me thinking that some of them were decent people ( although I realised he wasn’t when I checked his voting record). They’re all after cabinet positions aren’t they. sad

Farzanah Sat 30-Jul-22 15:42:13

I don’t believe that the Tory party has ever been in the business of improving people’s lives, but maintaining the status quo.

The tribute act to Thatcher, and Sunak are no exception by the policies they are proposing which will only increase the huge disparity between the richer and poorer in society.
The former will not worry how to heat their homes, feed their children, this winter or have long waits for medical treatment.

MaizieD Sat 30-Jul-22 10:56:25

Sunak is not likely to be in the Truss cabinet, certainly not chancellor, in fact if he doesn’t get the top job will likely leave politics.

Thus demonstrating his huge commitment to improving people's lives. hmm

If that's the way he feels he should never have entered politics in the first place.

Sorry I haven’t RTFT but I wonder if Sunak would have a position in a Truss cabinet, and who she might select as Chancellor. I detest Liz Truss but perhaps Sunak could be more useful if he were not PM?

Battering? All he has to do is stand there and lie like his predecessor. Because it’s allowed.

Dan Snow tweeted this today. Pure coincidence, I'm sure.

At the battle of Bosworth in 1485 Richard III sent urgent messages to Lord Stanley whose troops were lurking nearby. Stanley waited to see who would win, & intervened decisively when Henry Tudor looked a sure bet.
^He was rewarded, becoming the Earl of Derby & Lord High Constable.^

Thanks volver.
Dan Snow is one of the good guys in my book!
It'll be interesting to see whether history repeats itself.

RS 'did battle' with Andrew Neil this evening and seemed to emerge reasonably cheerfully. LT has declined the offer of an interview. I don't much like Andrew Neil's combative style but at least I know now that RS will withstand the battering of PMQs.

Can we have this person in charge of the country please?

OK, there's the Brexit thing, but I'm sure we could come to a grown-up agreement.

Wisely, I don't think he wants the job.
