Only two weeks to go until the end of the Tory leadership contest Only two weeks to go

And I would say thank heavens, but really for all the changing of horses in midstream, what exactly have they done in the last decade-plus, that has improved our lives?

We find it hard to find anything positive that Brexit has brought us, but what good, please tell me, Conservative voters, has the Conservative/Plutocrat party done for our lives in that time? We have just been given more pain today for the promise of jam tomorrow.

Now we have one candidate for leader telling us the most likely leader is proposing tax plans which would plunge the economy into an inflationary “spiral”. Gove adds his thinking by telling us Truss is "on holiday from reality".

Truss has offered what the very small selectorate wants. It is so far from what the country needs that I believe she will have to do an about turn; I would guess by October but even September is possible.

So when will those who may be conservative but are certainly not plutocrats going to decide they cannot vote for this cabal? They have done so much damage I cannot believe the NHS will ever recover; it will go into the future at least partly privatised. That, however, is simply the most obvious of their deliberate destruction. Those voting for these serial liars must believe they can afford it - why go with it otherwise?

My last question is "How long?". No, I am not quoting Psalm 13; I just want to know how much longer these shysters will be left in power.

I think it was mentioned in Rory Stewart’s podcast that Cameron tried to completely change the House of Lords totally undemocratically but I don’t remember what actually happened.

If he does stuff the HoL then he is doing the same to democracy, Maizie. Hopefully, there is some convention that can be quoted to stop him. That's very hopefully, though.

The nominations do, apparently, go to some Lords scrutiny committee, but seeing as they turned down Lebedev for a peerage but Johnson did it anyway it seems to be a bit toothless.

Yup, stuffing democracy seems about right...

Yes, indeed.

Sunak is hoping to be the UKs first Hindu PM.

And??

What Whitewavemark2 said.

I’m not interested in his faith, his policies is what will make a difference to my life.

What happens if Johnson manages to stuff the Lords with new tory peers in his resignation honours list? Do you think the revolting (in the 'revolutionary' sense of the word) old ones will outweigh them?

Whitewavemark2 Tue 30-Aug-22 11:06:24

DA yes I think that is a reasonable assumption, but I also think she will enjoy a honeymoon period, both by the Tory MPs and the right wing press. No doubt we will also see the polls looking much better for the Tories.

How long this lasts is the question.

DaisyAnne Tue 30-Aug-22 11:01:48

I'm sure I shouldn't be cheered by this but you have to take possibilities where you find them. This is the last paragraph of today's New Statesman email.

In any case, whether Truss could get her plans through parliament is not certain. Yes, the government has a healthy majority in the Commons, but in the House of Lords, where the Conservatives do not have a majority, convention states that peers do not have to pass bills that weren’t contained in the governing party’s manifesto. Add to that the fact that the majority of Conservative MPs didn’t want Truss to become leader, and the toxicity of the leadership campaign, and Prime Minister Truss might have a tricky return to parliament next week.

Truss has been chosen by neither the Tory MPs (she was not their first choice) nor the country at large, but by a tiny majority of 100000 - so possibly 51000 people have chosen our prime minister. Those 51k are not remotely representative of the country, being white, male, wealthy and elderly.

It is disgraceful.

Do other political parties not choose their leader this way ?
I presume for instance if it was a Labour leader they would be chosen by the party and party members

Whitewavemark2 Tue 30-Aug-22 10:59:33

I see that Johnson is on a farewell tour of Britain, emphasising how good he has been for the country?

Eggs anyone!

I find it strange Truss was named as a winner very early on despite doing poorly in the initial selection. Almost as if it was already decided.
I am not a Tory but my choice would be Sunak.

Wheniwasyourage Tue 30-Aug-22 10:27:47

Why do I find myself in Private Fraser mode so often? "We're aa' dooomed"...

henetha Tue 30-Aug-22 10:22:59

It's pathetic. Heaven help up if Liz Truss is elected. Rishi Sunak is not much better, but at least appears to have a brain.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 30-Aug-22 10:17:58

How on earth do we end up with a PM, whose policies ( I use the term guardedly) won’t stand up to a journalists questioning.

vegansrock Tue 30-Aug-22 07:05:58

Truss will be marmelised by a half decent interviewer and her advisors know it, so she will avoid scrutiny. I can’t understand why Johnson apologists are happy to have a proven corrupt liar in power and think he’s better than anyone shows how low the bar is. Meanwhile, the tories have left this country literally in deep shit.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 30-Aug-22 06:32:39

Why isn’t Truss being door-stepped to ask why she won’t be interviewed by BBC ? This would certainly happen if it was a labour candidate.

Perhaps Elstow could tell us why they think Labour would have been so bad? People frequently come out with that little gem but never explain... hmm

Schools are starting soon, so the kiddies won't have time to post wind-up drivel.

Wendy Chamberlain is absolutely right. Liz Truss is afraid of proper scrutiny. It says something when a Tory leadership candidate shies away from examination by the tame and subservient BBC which has been so kind to their party for too many years

Nick Robinson has a history of being a Conservative activist. If Truss can't face him how would she ever face a neutral or even antagonistic interviewer?

No different to Johnson, hiding in that industrial fridge, before the last election, so that journalists couldn't ask him any questions.

Cowards.

Truss is like the empty vessel theory - makes a lot of noise, but never says much that is meaningful or useful.

Johnson is supporting her because he thinks he can help bring her down, and come storming back as leader.

But, at least we can all cheer that she wants to keep Nadine Dorries in post - we will need a few laughs, with her crazy ramblings, before the next election.?

Is it true that Sunak is now in a leading position ? That is what is being reported here but they often are biased or get it wrong. I don’t like the look or sound of either of them tbh

Elstow One day you'll wake up and smell the ordure left by Johnson.

There are several GNers who have supported Brexit and then Johnson for a long time and have had a change of heart. Maybe you too will have a road to Damascus conversion?

varian Mon 29-Aug-22 21:36:08

What a pathetic post. I voted for Liz Truss weeks ago but like so many members I would have preferred Boris to stay as PM.
Can't imagine the depth of manure we'd be in now if Labour had been in charge....

You only have to read the Daily Mail as many Conservative voters do, to see the depth of manure that Boros Johnson's government had inflicted on this country.
