Only two weeks to go until the end of the Tory leadership contest Only two weeks to go

And I would say thank heavens, but really for all the changing of horses in midstream, what exactly have they done in the last decade-plus, that has improved our lives?

We find it hard to find anything positive that Brexit has brought us, but what good, please tell me, Conservative voters, has the Conservative/Plutocrat party done for our lives in that time? We have just been given more pain today for the promise of jam tomorrow.

Now we have one candidate for leader telling us the most likely leader is proposing tax plans which would plunge the economy into an inflationary “spiral”. Gove adds his thinking by telling us Truss is "on holiday from reality".

Truss has offered what the very small selectorate wants. It is so far from what the country needs that I believe she will have to do an about turn; I would guess by October but even September is possible.

So when will those who may be conservative but are certainly not plutocrats going to decide they cannot vote for this cabal? They have done so much damage I cannot believe the NHS will ever recover; it will go into the future at least partly privatised. That, however, is simply the most obvious of their deliberate destruction. Those voting for these serial liars must believe they can afford it - why go with it otherwise?

My last question is "How long?". No, I am not quoting Psalm 13; I just want to know how much longer these shysters will be left in power.

The EU is now talking about decoupling the gas price to bring the cost of all energy down. Meanwhile, we are still stuck in the Groundhog Day of the Conservative Party election.

Are you serious? Nick Robinson a Conservative activist? Grow up for goodness sake you muppet

Are you denying the fact that Nick Robinson, like Andrew Neil and many other BBC journalists have been active members of the Cnservative Party Elstow??

varian Mon 29-Aug-22 21:03:26

For example Andrew Neil

After school, Neil attended the University of Glasgow, where he edited the student newspaper, the Glasgow University Guardian, and dabbled in student television. He was a member of the Dialectic Society and the Conservative Club, and participated in Glasgow University Union inter-varsity debates. In 1971, he was chairman of the Federation of Conservative Students. He graduated in 1971, with an MA with honours in political economy and political science.

No , I am not a muppet, just someone who prefers fact to fiction. Elstow

Nick Robinson is just one of many conservatives who have been political commentators for the Brexit Broadcasting Corporation.

varian Mon 29-Aug-22 20:55:42

Robinson was a founder-member of Macclesfield Young Conservatives (YC) and rose through the ranks, becoming Cheshire YC Chairman from 1982 to 1984 and became a key activist in the moderate-controlled North West Area organisation. Philip Pedley, as National YC Chairman, co-opted Robinson onto the YC National Advisory Committee in 1983 and appointed him National Campaign Director of Youth for Multilateral Disarmament. Robinson was elected National Vice Chairman from 1985 to 1987 and succeeded a fellow moderate, Richard Fuller, when Robinson was elected Chairman of the National Young Conservatives on the moderate ticket against strong right-wing opposition (1987–1988).[7]

At university he was President of the Oxford University Conservative Association in 1985.[8][9]

As a Tory member, can you tell us why you think Liz Truss has decided she won’t be interviewed Elstow?

Ilovecheese Mon 29-Aug-22 20:19:16

Gosh Elstow what a charmer you are!

Ilovecheese Mon 29-Aug-22 20:16:38

Her policy of avoiding scrutiny is working for her though, she is on track to win and doesn't want to scupper her chances by putting her foot in her mouth any more than she absolutely has to.

What a pathetic post. I voted for Liz Truss weeks ago but like so many members I would have preferred Boris to stay as PM.
Can't imagine the depth of manure we'd be in now if Labour had been in charge....

varian Mon 29-Aug-22 20:06:30

Wendy Chamberlain is absolutely right. Liz Truss is afraid of proper scrutiny. It says something when a Tory leadership candidate shies away from examination by the tame and subservient BBC which has been so kind to their party for too many years

Nick Robinson has a history of being a Conservative activist. If Truss can't face him how would she ever face a neutral or even antagonistic interviewer?

Dinahmo Mon 29-Aug-22 18:52:13

Liz Truss has pulled out of an interview with Nick Robinson which she agreed to do earlier in the month. Sunak has faced Robinson but it would appear that Truss is running scared.

One can only hope that the Tory Party members who appear to support her will realise that Sunak is the better of the two candidates and that he is not about to introduce rises in the rates of tax.

The following is an excerpt from a Guardian article -

A source in Sunak’s campaign said their tally showed Truss had done just two broadcast interviews of any form during the campaign, whereas Sunak had undertaken nine, also including three spots on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme and an appearance on ITV’s This Morning.

The source said: “It’s important that candidates face proper scrutiny so that members and the public know what they are offering. Avoiding that scrutiny suggests either Truss doesn’t have a plan at all or the plan she has falls far short of the challenges we face this winter.”

Wendy Chamberlain, the Liberal Democrats’ chief whip, said: “Liz Truss is running scared of the media and proper public scrutiny. How can she lead our country through an economic crisis when she can’t even cope with a basic media interview?

“She wants to follow in Margaret Thatcher’s footsteps but she’s fallen at the first hurdle. She’s fighting for the highest office by answering the lowest number of difficult questions.”

Liz Truss has suggested a reduction in the rate of VAT to 5% in order to help the poorer members in our society.

This is an absolute fallacy. It will not help those most affected by the cost of living crisis. The poorest amongst us cannot afford to buy enough food for their families - no VAT on food except for items such as alcoholic drinks, confectionery, crisps and savoury snacks, hot food, sports drinks, hot takeaways, ice cream, soft drinks and mineral water.

The current rate of VAT on gas and electricity is 5% so no help there.

There is no VAT on young children's clothes and shoes although it gets a bit complicated for children who are as tall as adults.

This woman lives in cloud cuckoo land.

Add to that the people who spend the most money are going to be generally (but not always) the very rich. With a regressive tax like VAT, they will make the most savings.

This ludicrously extended leadership contest has been a self-indulgent nonsense inflicted on a country in crisis by a party of small minded little Englanders who have little in common with the rest of us and no interest at all in what is best for our country.

They are like Nero p;laying his fiddle while Rome burned.

They have treated the decent citizens of the UK with utter contempt.

M0nica Sun 28-Aug-22 19:03:37

Aniebach precisely.

One cannot compare what they earn with our pensions even those who with a combined state and private pension used to be reasonably well off until this fiasco.

Apparently, somebody earning £45K will need help to pay the grotesque bills.

I did an online shop at Aldi today and discovered I cannot afford to buy my favourite, Lurpack butter which was selling at just under a fiver. Aldi's own was so much cheaper.

I read online today that over the last 5 years Liz Truss has claimed almost £5K for her second home in Norfolk to pay for gas and electricity. She of course is not alone- surely this nonsense should be stopped.

I think the Conservatives will receive a nasty shock at the next election as so many of them will be looking for jobs. Their noses are so far in the trough they have no idea how the rest of us are surviving.

Crazy, isn't it!

I can see how allowing them to reclaim the minimum standing charge on energy at the second home might be excusable, but why shouldn't they pay for any energy that they have actually used out of their own income, just like thedrest of us have to?

Anniebach Sun 28-Aug-22 18:38:11

Will what make any difference?

DiamondLily Sun 28-Aug-22 18:37:19

They will be in power until the next general election. Maybe unlike last time the opposition will put up a vote wining manifesto. They will also need a leader who will appeal which I don't think they have at this moment

I think, after Corbyn, they have, finally, got a leader with more “mainstream”appeal, which, obviously is needed,

But, Starmer needs to come out fighting - with some sensible policies.

Labour have spent too much time in opposition because of poor leadership. ?

The thought of listening to Truss every week at PMQ ?

cakehunter Sun 28-Aug-22 17:04:32

Yikes that was meant to be a new thread! But insert Truss or Sunak if you like as question is the same.

cakehunter Sun 28-Aug-22 16:57:37

Is there a Prime Minister, President or Head of State, of any country, either past or present, whose leadership qualities and personal integrity you feel is worthy of the title. JFK was my biggest disappointment.
So, never mind Boris, I honestly can’t think of anyone.
