What's the point of a Prince of Wales?

I believe the Prince of Wales is basically the top bod in the hierarchy in Wales and has been an Englishman since the 14th Century. I understand it is an expression of the rule of the English over the Welsh.

I have googled the role of the Prince and Princess of Wales and it appears to be to visit as many places in the country as possible and learn to speak Welsh. Personally I find the conferring of titles such as this on Royals a patronising anachronism, having once had to explain to a French person that the Duke of Edinburgh didn't really run Edinburgh.

What do Welsh people think about the whole thing?

I think you'll find Thegrandmarniter, that any person from a country in the UK that doesn't declare undying love for the English Establishment, and has the temerity to opine that their own country might be capable of running their own affairs, is labelled anti-English.

I think its a defence mechanism amongst those who can't conceive that there is anything that might be an actual alternative to being English.

Thegrandmarniter

Michael Sheen isn’t anti English and neither am I. I’m not anti royal either.

Check out the Speech where he lists the grievances going back hundreds of years that he holds against the English.

All whilst absolving Europe of all their misdemeanours in his first sentence! Romans? Normans? Let alone Germans twice in the last century....

He’s not anti royal at all, he speaks with great respect of the royals. He gave back his OBE because he didn’t want to be a hypocrite in that he said it would be a meaningful and powerful gesture if the title Prince of Wales was not conferred in the way it has been. It is a title only, not a role, originally a put-down to the Welsh which we really don’t need. It has led to people thinking that Wales is a principality. It isn't, it’s a country in its own right and always has been. This fact was confirmed by the International Organisation for Standardisation in 2011.

Love it Pantglas2 ??
That has put him in his place!

Pantglas2 Sat 17-Sept-22 18:13:17

A bit rich for Michael Sheen to call out someone whose Welsh pronunciation yesterday was perfect compared to his own mangling of “Yma o Hyd” in his rousing football team speech.

He’s anti Royal, sent his OBE back and loses no opportunity to parade his left wing, anti English credentials instead of sticking to something at which he’s absolutely brilliant.

There are huge links to Owain in Corwen and a magnificent statue, so I'm not surprised they held some events.

Thegrandmarniter Sat 17-Sept-22 17:15:25

There was a great turnout in Corwen, and I’m told there was in Machynlleth too.

fairfraise Sat 17-Sept-22 16:51:03

I didn't know of it until I read about it in the press. Perhaps they celebrated today instead !

So now Michael Sheen is suggesting it might be considered 'insensitive' for King Charles to have visited Wales on 16 Sep which is Owain Glyndwr Day, especially as several Glydwr Day events had to be cancelled. Just wondered what the Welsh grans thought. Did you even know of this day?
King Charles and Owain Glyndwr Day

Maybe republicans would think it insensitive, but nobody celebrates Owain Glyndwr day in Wales as far as I know? The turnout to protest at Cardiff Castle yesterday was tiny too, I don’t think it has legs.

I can’t believe that anyone would send nasty PMs. Surely people can’t take posting on social media so such a degree. Or can they? Wouldn’t occur to me.

tickingbird Fri 16-Sept-22 20:18:47

I remember the thread well and it was a Scottish politician. I didn’t take part in the thread but read it. I thought, perhaps, more had gone on that I wasn’t aware off because I couldn’t see what caused someone to leave. However, it was just a change of name and normal service soon resumed with renewed vigour!

Yes Aveline firmly in cheek.
I do enjoy the cut and thrust of intelligent argument, occasional sarcasm when justified. I don’t enjoy any thread that descends in to pettiness. Some posters pursue it to the nth degree, the point I was making was that Alegrias didn’t. Volver does.
May I add that I’m surprised that a strong character like Alegrias allowed herself to be driven off but I know the feeling.

Yes, I must admit I was astonished when Alegrias left over something that was not really contentious.

Mea culpa

It was the thread about chopping the bottoms of classroom doors which became quite funny and quite farcical.
There are many threads which poke fun, or far worse, at politicians as they are often criticised on GN.

That was one of those threads, very amusing.

I posted that the thread was a joy, how Gransnet used to be.
That poster said that if that was what Gransnet was like, she wanted no part of it. Fair enough.

I must admit I was surprised, as it was a thread about politicians, not attacking any posters.

Has anyone seen Michael Sheen's video about it? It's 7 minutes long has a blustery wind blowing through it, is completely respectful to the Royal family's loss but it's a cracker. I highly recommend it - even if you just scroll through to the last sentence.

tickingbird Fri 16-Sept-22 19:07:36

I wouldn’t care. If someone sent me a nasty PM I’d name and shame in a flash!

Too true GG, often in plain sight

I really cannot understand the mindset of some people.

Perhaps I am just naïve?

JaneJudge Fri 16-Sept-22 18:36:14

GG13 if you block them they can't send you any more PMs and it is my choice to carry on posting. I'm just a bit mindful that this may happen to other posters and that's why they get so passionate on threads.

LauraNorderr Fri 16-Sept-22 18:35:58

You are right about that JaneJudge. Having been on the receiving end of some real nastiness twice now it’s very tempting to name and shame but obviously I’d be the one to get banned. Best not to care any more than they do flowers

GrannyGravy13 Fri 16-Sept-22 18:34:21

JaneJudge

they don't care GG13

That is disgusting, maybe name and shame along with a screenshot of their PM on this thread.

Some folks are just out and out nasty

and btw I will report and block anyone who Pms me. I have had enough of it

If you are receiving nasty PMs screenshot and send to GNHQ as that is not acceptable ?

is Sussexborn a namechanger?

“I thought that came across as extremely arrogant. No point in being on a discussion forum if you just want to listen to your own echo.”

Could apply to several posts including yours QB.
