We can no longer afford the Tories

The BoE has had to step in again to prop up the U.K. economy, because the markets simply do not believe that Kwarteng or Truss know what they are doing. I suspect too, that the OBR report is showing an unfounded gap between spending and resources.

An damning article in Bloomsbury traces the UK’s decline from the time of Brexit to now and it makes for alarming reading.

We can no longer afford Brexit either.

Unless we have a competent government that stops this decline our future is looking bleak indeed.

I know it’s dismal but I think sunak might have been better. But what do I know?

Article in the Economist…love comment about ‘shelf life of a lettuce’

Liz truss is already a historical figure. However long she now lasts in office, she is set to be remembered as the prime minister whose grip on power was the shortest in British political history. Ms Truss entered Downing Street on September 6th. She blew up her own government with a package of unfunded tax cuts and energy-price guarantees on September 23rd. Take away the ten days of mourning after the death of the queen, and she had seven days in control. That is the shelf-life of a lettuce.

If this judgment sounds severe, look at the bond markets, where gilt yields have this week been climbing again. Two fires are burning in markets. The first, more urgent problem is related to financial stability. The Bank of England has twice widened its emergency bond-buying programme to try to prevent a spiral of forced selling of assets by pension funds. As a sign of markets’ continuing unease, sterling slid when Andrew Bailey, the bank’s governor, said on October 11th that purchases would end as planned three days later. Yet officials had reportedly been briefing bankers that they might be extended after all.

Even theBank of England officials are disagreeing

Perhaps they shouldn’t have jettisoned Mr.Johnson.

Please don’t make me more desperate and miserable.

It was Johnson that laid the ground for what we are experiencing now.

The Bank of England hasn't helped matters, initially by raising interest rates to combat inflation when the cause of the inflation was uncontrollable by interest rates, in that it was increased suppliers' prices that caused it. Raising interest rates only works if there is too much 'demand' in the economy. All the BoE did was exacerbate inflation by adding increased mortgage costs to spiralling energy costs.

Now we seem to have a power struggle within the BoE to add to the confusion with officials briefing against the Governor. Great ?

I can't help wondering if the market madness would come to an end if a GE were to be announced, with the very high prospect of Labour winning a handsome majority with a less extreme ideologically based economic policy.

Parliament will debate the call for a general election on 17th October

It won't make the slightest difference, varian. They aren't 'proper' debates on a motion with a vote taken at the end. And you just get an anodyne email at the end of it supporting the government position.

I sign them, all the same, as it does give an indication of the feeling in the country...

I think the government are now going to hide behind the escalating and dangerous situation with Russia and it’s nuclear threat. That’s what I’m expecting at PMQT today.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 12-Oct-22 12:18:17

Blimey PMQs is getting really embarrassing - Truss is dreadful.

The Prime Minister was utterly hopeless in replying to
@Keir_Starmer
’s questions. This really is bad. Viewers at home watching #PMQs may not be able to see it but in the chamber you can see Tory MPs with their head in their hands, aghast at her answers. What have the Tories done?

MaizieD Wed 12-Oct-22 12:25:11

Absolutely no public spending cuts?

Hmm...

That'll really reassure the markets...wink

(But do we believe her/)

Whitewavemark2 Wed 12-Oct-22 12:32:50

Well if she is telling the truth - expect a spectacular market crash.

That was so embarrassing you could see it on her MPs faces.

MayBee70 Wed 12-Oct-22 13:20:16

They did nothing to reassure energy users while they had their leadership election. In the meantime European countries were moving fast to help people. And Labours 6 month idea was just an initial package to help people. They weren’t going to just drop it after 6 months.

She will get slaughtered in PMQ, Johnson could bluster his way through, Truss just isn’t up to the job.

Thos os Truss's version of Johnson's vaccine roll out. Whatever he was questioned about or accused of he always trotted out the vaccine rollout, Truss and her silly supporters talk about the money they have saved on energy bills, irrespective of the matter being discussed.

But no cuts are a cut. You would have to have increases to have the same spending power.

Paul Johnson was on a news programme this morning and he pointed out that the highest areas of State Spend are:

1. Health
2. Pensions
3. Working Age benefits
4. Education

"No cuts" for any one of those area would be a decrease in spending power. So why would just "no cuts" be good enough? The Tories trashed the economy, not the citizens of this country.

Think again Ms Truss.

Thanks for the video varian. It actually made me shiver. I say again ‘why aren’t we out in the streets shouting about this’!!!

Blood banks on verge of collapse due to shortage of staff. This is getting truly serious!!!

Fleurpepper Wed 12-Oct-22 18:46:46

Which means that operations which were finally booked for knees, hips, and all sorts of debilitating conditions, but not 'emergencies' - after years of waiting and total shut-down due to Covid, will now be cancelled, AGAIN.

...and if called today a nonzero chance of the SNP being the official opposition smile

I’ve just checked, this does apply to England only. Wales stocks are good, the number of days is online, but credit to Scotland for their graphics telling us how much stock they have, it’s simple but so effective!

According to the articles on the internet blood banks are low due to people not donating.

The lines were overwhelmed today since it was announced, appointments filling up quickly.
