Oh dear, our U.S. allies say the U.K. are in turmoil...agree...but what should happen now? Am going to bed early!

Norah Mon 17-Oct-22 13:35:03

Yet U.S. have this---

"Former DOJ official Neal Katyal commented on Donald Trump's 14-page response to the DOJ.

Katyal said he did not think the response would help Trump unless he was trying to plead insanity.

He said Trump's response was "evidence" of an insanity plea."

^Maybe that is the 'uniform' of the aristocracy in their more 'relaxed' moments^

The Rees Moggs aren't aristocrats ?

Possibly middle class and nouveau riche.

I believe they think they are, or he does anyway.

He reminds me of the author, the late Evelyn Waugh (he of Brideshead Revisited fame), who l-o-n-g-e-d to be part of the aristos, and affected all kinds of mannerisms, vocabulary and dress, in much the same way (including on occasions, the top hat). He also had a handful of children whom - when talking to his wife about them, were always referred to as "your" children. He 'collected' fashionable and aristocratic friends and developed a taste for "country house" living. And he also had a real dislike for the post-war welfare state.

JR-M appears to have a similar disposition. I wonder if he still wants to be Prime Minister when he's 70 as he did at age 12!

Grantanow Sat 15-Oct-22 23:13:31

Maybe the Ministry of Silly Walks will get a new Minister in the coming reshuffle (yes, it's coming I think).

Callistemon21 Sat 15-Oct-22 22:06:59

It is.

I hope those children rebel!!

DaisyAnne Sat 15-Oct-22 22:06:08

No, I know what you're saying Callistemon. I think it is very weird behaviour. I do wonder what his childhood was like but, of course, he must believe he was very privileged, so it was okay.

Callistemon21 Sat 15-Oct-22 21:48:20

It's all affected, though, DaisyAnne

I'm not saying he was from a deprived background (as Truss and others have tried to claim they were) but he was ordinary middle class and has adopted this persona.

There are some people do see their children as extensions of themselves. Perhaps that is a key to the conservative psyche? In fact, those who still believe in the heredity system must do, mustn't they?

What I find very odd indeed is dressing your child as a clone of yourself and him wearing a tweed jacket etc. just like your own. That takes a weird mindset, I hope he rebels as most young people would - who wants to be a doppelgänger of their father?

Yes, that struck me, too.

Maybe that is the 'uniform' of the aristocracy in their more 'relaxed' moments.
In the video you will notice that young Jacob is wearing a camel-hair coat when he's in the bank. Also part of the 'uniform'.
He, clearly, didn't rebel! But times have changed, who knows if the current Rees-Mogg youngster will. Maybe he'll have a 'gap' break and get out into the world and escape from his narrow confines for a year or two.
... which I'd wish for all children.

RichmondPark1 Sat 15-Oct-22 21:09:30

Good grief the video is revealing. Thanks for posting it*Dickens*. The 12 year old Jacob, who is wearing a Love Maggie badge, says, 'I love money, always have done'.

Give me a child until he is 7 and I will show you the man.

Appalling that someone should harass JR-M's child, but I have to say that I find it very irritating and odd that Mr Mogg often brings one of his boys along to events and meetings.

Why does he do that? Is he setting him up to be part of some Mogg political dynasty? It's like he's being groomed to be a future Tory MP or PM.

Jacob's own father, William, did the same. It is a sort of dynastic thing. A kind of grooming of the eldest youngster for his future role. Probably in politics.

There's a video of a rather precocious Jacob as a 12 year old laying out clearly his plans and ambitions for the future.

Speaking as someone who has a person with dementia in the family, I find it utterly distasteful to speculate on whether a person's gaffs are due to dementia or not. Much less to use it as some kind of insult and suggest that they are not up to the job.

Come back when you know what you are talking about.

Good post volver.

I imagine we all have known, by now, people with different degrees of dementia and different types, all of which will show in varied ways.

The use of 'dementia' as an insult - which this was obviously meant to be, reminds me of the past when the word 'spastic' was used in the same way. Those using 'dementia' should ask themselves what they would think of someone using the other word in this way.

That photo was taken 3 years ago, we only have to blink and we'll have a new PM, Ree-Mogg Jnr.

Poor boy, he looks most uncomfortable.

I agree about JR M, like with everything else he seems to be in oblivious denial or prefers to downplay the cost of public office to his own child. It will come back to bite him.
Didn't some politician on the election trail get his little daughter to eat a beef burger for the cameras once?

Looking for faults all the time, what condition is that?

I'd call it "wanting to get things right and not accepting hearsay and gossip as fact, while not trying to impress others with my non-existent medical skills" smile

Chestnut Sat 15-Oct-22 15:59:51

Thanks MayBee70 but neither of us need to apologise to volver, it's pretty much a regular issue on these boards.

Well I've no time for it MayBee70.

Perhaps not using the right words to express oneself is an early sign of dementia too.

Well admittedly I don't know the difference between symptoms of a brain tumour and dementia, but I do know the woman and you don't. Maybe you take things too literally, because you seem to jump on anyone who posts the smallest thing you can find fault with. Looking for faults all the time, what condition is that?

Watch this video until the end and then tell me that president Biden is a well man.
I deal with dementia on a practical level most days with a neighbour.
This man is in a very powerful position.

I think that some of us write things a bit quickly ( I know do) and it’s unfortunate that we don’t have an edit button.

My American friends say so, and rumours have been in our press for a long time. He addresses people who've died, can't find his way off the stage, forgets what he's saying, etc etc

So, it's really diagnosis by biased rumour. I think we have all lived long enough to know there are lies, damned lies and malicious rumour and to ignore such things.
