Crete: flash floods

One of my favourite places in the world is Crete. I long to go back there one day. But last night I saw in the news that there have been terrible flash floods in Heraklion and Chania. It brought it home to me how nowhere is now safe from global warming. I’m not aware of anything like that happening in Crete before. It has always been, to me a wonderfully safe and spiritual place . It’s really got to me…

Serious problems on the Mississippi. Drought ?
There is a backup of 1,700 barges because they can’t proceed.

I love Ctete too. Hadn't heard about this. Hoping to go again next year. We love Ag Nic. It just beautiful there. Love the Greek people too.

It's awful MayBee70. The rescuers searching the sea are so brave. Like you I have very happy memories of Crete and it's hard to think of the lovely people there having to suffer this.

My family in Tasmania and Melbourne have suffered flooding this week too...beautiful botanic gardens under a sea of mud and water and a burst reservoir dam. Climate change is causing problems everywhere.

So sorry to read about this, we have many happy memories of Sissi, Ag Nic, Spinalonga...and the lovely welcoming people.
So sad.

I never used to be someone who liked hot weather till I went to Crete. I used to sunbathe early morning and late afternoon and in between would cover up and take myself off walking in the foothills watching birds of prey and looking out for pine martens ( never saw one but my ex did grrr). I often said to people that I couldn’t understand why I found the place so spiritual and calming and they usually understood and agreed with me. I’m not religious ( at least I don’t think I am) but I would sometimes feel that I was back in biblical times and half expected to meet up with a lion round the next corner ( I later read that there were lions on Crete at one time). The smell of Thyme and the sound of the cicadas added to the sensual beauty of it. So I feel that global warming is now destroying my own personal paradise sad.
