There are some lovely Scottish posters on Gransnet, Prentice

That was a famous remark by Billy Connelly Callistemon

Oh, was it?

I didn't know, I thought it was my original thought ?
And I was just stating a fact.

If my dearest, lovely Scottish friend had thought she was in any way like Billy Connolly she'd have laughed her head off.

And he won't call himself English because he has nothing in common with most English people, except where he happened to be born.

I find that an odd thing to say.

English people are very diverse, they are not all alike!
And neither are Scottish people.

In fact, the Scots I know (whom I like and in one case was very fond of indeed) don't seem any different many English people I know.

Then you mix in very limited circles.

And if my OH says he doesn't have anything in common with a group of people, then whatever you think, he doesn't have anything in common with that group of people.

Then you mix in very limited circles

Rude and untrue
(But a typical volver remark)

But anyone who thinks all "English people" are alike must know a very limited group of people.
English people differ in personality in different areas and belong to many social classes, colours, creeds.

And the Scots? Well, I suppose those I know all do have one thing in common.
They prefer to live in other parts of the UK and overseas.

So that’s why my MP sent me a follow up letter regarding fracking. I bet she doesn’t want it brought up at the election that she voted for it.

westendgirl Wed 26-Oct-22 14:32:11

I think Sunak has made a major error in appointing Braverman to the Home Office. It points quite clearly to promises made for her support. He could live to regret it.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 26-Oct-22 14:29:03

Well done Sunak.

Banning fracking is a very rational thing to do.

Prentice Wed 26-Oct-22 14:15:24

Ah CatsCatsCats that is too sensible an approach on a political thread of a forum. It cannot be allowed, the only way is to say that all politicians from one Party are wonderful and the opposite bench are all awful.Otherwise you may be accused of being a member of ‘the other’ Party.smile

CatsCatsCats Wed 26-Oct-22 14:02:28

You should have a go at PMQs. On the Tory bench obviously.

No, you have me wrong. I'm no Tory, nor am I Labour, LibDems or Green. I just have my likes and dislikes within each party.

MayBee70 Wed 26-Oct-22 14:01:37

It amuses me when the Conservative party try to get one over on Keir when it comes to matters regarding domestic and international law! I suppose at least Sunak hasn’t resorted to Jimmy Saville accusations. Which reminds me that’s another thing that Johnson did that he had to be rebuked for (I lose count of them). I bet most people have forgotten that: the MP’s calling for his return obviously had.

Prentice Wed 26-Oct-22 13:29:58

I think Mr Starmer always does reasonably well and sounds to be a straight talking sort of person, but I think he has a harder target in Mr Sunak than in the previous two incumbents of Number Ten.
Callistemon I have had various nice holidays in Wales over the years so may call myself Welsh.grin

*Whitewave*, Keir Starmer agrees with us that Sunak has done a ‘grubby deal’ over the re-appointment of Braverman. Hey, perhaps we know what we’re talking about! My idea was rather more conspiratorial than yours - but echoed by KS, nonetheless.

?

Daisymae Wed 26-Oct-22 13:06:00

I thought that Starmer did well today. I think that Sunak is going to struggle, he sounded a bit vacuous. He is again defending the indefensible. Braverman broke the ministerial code.

Casdon Wed 26-Oct-22 13:03:47

So Braverman failed to turn up to answer for her behaviour.

Stinks.

Bravo Yvette Cooper, calling her out. I’m convinced Braverman is scared of her.

Have you actually read that Guardian article Catscatscats?

I'm going to guess the answer is "no".

What! So the Guardian is not expressing relief, but expressing sarcasm? Wonders will never cease shock

I bet they are relieved, deep down. It could have been so, so much worse.

Come on now.

You quote an article and use it to support your argument, then when it's pointed out that the article says the exact opposite of what you think it says, you say that they probably think the opposite of what they say anyway.

You should have a go at PMQs. On the Tory bench obviously.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 26-Oct-22 12:36:27

What on earth do other countries make of Fabricant.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 26-Oct-22 12:31:06

Why did the Tories cheer when Sunak talked about the mess the U.K. is in?

Weird.

MayBee70 Wed 26-Oct-22 12:27:28

Still not getting answers though. Not sure what Sunaks reply to Caroline Lucas’s question regarding fracking meant. My MP has said it’s ‘absolutely clear ‘ that fracking will only take place if communities agree to it. However no one seems to know how that agreement will be reached. She obviously doesn’t realise that some of us listen to the parliamentary debates.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 26-Oct-22 12:22:13

Starmer firing with all barrels at PMQs.

We could make a complete nonsense of this policy if we all turned out to demonstrate.?

Dinahmo Wed 26-Oct-22 11:48:20

Per George Monbiot in the Guardian

"Almost all the media reported a scripted comment by the newly reinstated home secretary, Suella Braverman, about the “tofu-eating wokerati”. Astonishingly, scarcely any of them reported what she was doing at the time. She was pushing through the House of Commons the most repressive legislation of the modern era.

Under the public order bill, anyone who has protested in the previous five years, or has encouraged other people to protest, can be forced to “submit to … being fitted with, or the installation of, any necessary apparatus” to monitor their movements. In other words, if you attend or support any protest in which “serious disruption to two or more individuals or to an organisation” occurs, you can be forced to wear an electronic tag. “Serious disruption” was redefined by the 2022 Police Act to include noise.

This is just one of a series of astounding measures in the bill, which has been hardly remarked upon in public life as it passes through Britain’s legislature. What we see here is two losses in one moment: the final erasure of the right to protest, and political journalism’s mutation from reporting substance to reporting spectacle. These are just the latest of our losses."

So, reading the above, any of you or children or grandchildren who have taken part in demonstrations during the last 5 years could be tagged. this is really scary.
