Britain is Broken protest in London

What are they protesting about this time?
No more oil, no more gas?
‘Savage Tory cuts’?

I suppose poor Londoners should be thankful they haven’t glued themselves to roads, stopping everyone going about their business, or dangling from a bridge over the M25, bringing the motorway to a close like before.

With any luck the torrential rain would have sent them scampering.
Every cloud eh?!

As someone said earlier the crunch point will come in the spring after a very hard winter, cuts to services and a high rise in Council Tax. We also have up and coming strikes, especially the nurses strike. My thoughts are that it will end a massive general strike and protests and fingers crossed a general elections. Just wish I could go and live in another country

This is my hope too Dickens. I actually think the diversity of the protest makes it more powerful because it shows just how many sectors of society are deeply unhappy. Of course, the RW will endeavour to belittle the message - sadly, people may fall for their propaganda. Let’s hope those in power have had their minds focused a little sharper by yesterday’s march.

Yes LizzieDrip, I think that's about as much as we can hope for.

I've no time for the DM or the other RW tabloids and their collective poisonous propaganda. However, reading some of the comments from its readers - under various articles and editorials - it's quite clear that a number of them question what they are being fed.

Interestingly, it's assumed by many that anyone who reads the Guardian is a 'woke leftie remoaner liberal' (or similar). I used to contribute frequently on the "Comment is Free" section and the amazing thing I noticed - at that time anyway - is that there were almost as many commenters with completely the opposite ideology to the one the G supposedly espouses. That's one of the reasons I enjoyed it because of its diverse opinion - or that of the readership, anyway. So I make no assumptions about the readership of the RW tabloids!

I have absolutely no idea what the solution is. I simply hope that the current government have their collective mind concentrated by the obvious growing resentment and unrest that their policies have so far ignited, and that they cannot ignore it and just blithely follow their ideological path.

While it’s the “eco rabble” it will be ignored because the message is not consistent, protesting about diverse issues. I think the test will come next spring after a very hard winter, we will see just how much real suffering we have had to endure.

"Britain is Broken" is a bit of a broad church isn't it! As you say, the protests are about diverse issues. People's individual experiences will dictate what they think is 'broken'.

But all the issues are under the umbrella of the last 12 years of Tory government so a general election is being demanded. But the RW media will need to deflect so will predictably vilify the protestors. It's all so predictable.

... and depressing. To those like me who are 'middle of the road' (and have little faith in the Lin Dems). I can't see any solution. If we had a GE and Labour won - look what Starmer is inheriting! There might be 'good will' but there are no easy solutions - not in a society as fractured as ours is at the moment. How do you pull together - unite - a nation of hard right and hard left, especially when members of each group don't even agree with each other.

I have absolutely no idea what the solution is. I simply hope that the current government have their collective mind concentrated by the obvious growing resentment and unrest that their policies have so far ignited, and that they cannot ignore it and just blithely follow their ideological path.

The BBC reported on it.

A naked lady? Even if she was painted as a bird, it was a bit cold for nakedness yesterday.
Why is being naked and painted as a bird protesting? Not sure I understand the logic there.

Thousands of people rallied in the rain in central London to demonstrate against what they called ‘Tory austerity’ and demand an immediate general election.
Marching from Embankment to Trafalgar Square, protesters called for funding for the NHS, the end of a Tory government and to ‘tax the rich not the poor’.
The protest, called Britain Is Broken, has been organised by the People’s Assembly Against Austerity, and is supported by groups including CND, Unite, Just Stop Oil and Extinction Rebellion

It was to be expected that the Guardian, ITV and BBC (and probably the Independent) would report the event in a more sedate, factual manner. Politically - ostensibly - middle of the road, left of centre, liberal. It could safely be assumed the rally would get a mention.

But the Daily Mail together with The Sun have the highest circulation figures - both right wing.

I haven't looked at The Sun or Express.

My point is that the media that counts will portray the rally in a negative light. It counts because the RW media is the most popular, it is read by more people, who align with its political outlook.

I am, in fact, attacking the right wing media, in this case, the DM, for its manipulative, provocative headlines. So pointing out that the event has been noted in the more saner media is telling me nothing I didn't already know.

You’re right Dickens - it will be ignored and ridiculed by the media. But the voices of thousands of people will eventually be heard. I have to believe that, for my own peace of mind!

Daisymae Sun 06-Nov-22 10:37:56

I looked yesterday but couldn't find any mention of the protest. I think that I only saw it on FB or Twitter maybe.

Dickens Sun 06-Nov-22 10:35:44

The fact that Mick Lynch and Jeremy Corbyn were speakers at the rally will guarantee that it will either be ignored or ridiculed by the RW media.

The message will be lost because said media will play the man instead of the ball.

... here's the Daily Mail's headline...

They just can't get enough, can they? Eco-rabble Just Stop Oil - who caused chaos EVERY day of last month - join thousands of protesters including NAKED woman painted as a bird in march through London demanding general election

There you are... those calling for a general election are "eco-rabble" - not forgetting the naked lady painted as a bird.

People informed. Job done. We don't need a general election. Case dismissed.

I'm going to work in the garden and will now have a media-free day. It's too depressing frankly.

So good to see thousands of people, from all walks of life, out on the streets protesting in London yesterday. The march, organised by The People’s Assembly, appears to have been largely ignored by the right-wing MSM - no surprise there. I couldn’t get to London for yesterday’s rally but I’m hoping for further marches in northern cities. Any GNs go yesterday?
