Why did Sunak appoint someone who was already under investigation, and has now resigned because of undoubted evidence of serous bullying.

I despair sometimes at the language used on some of these posts. They are similar to trolling on other social network sites when we start calling individuals “Cruella” and such like. This site should be better than that!

Given that the Home Secretary has been in post for weeks rather than years, I suggest yet another media fiction is being perpetrated. I also don’t see very much difference between personal direct vilification and the more remote written kind.

I don’t know for sure how many appointments the prime minister has made but if one or two are slightly adrift, it’s hardly the biggest disaster. In any event, GW did not stay in government very long.

Grantanow Fri 11-Nov-22 12:20:41

Good riddance.

Nannapat1 Fri 11-Nov-22 12:38:01

Presumably RS appointed those who agreed to vote for him which included Cruella and Williamson. It would seem then that all the stuff about a government with honesty and integrity turns out to be the exact opposite. Same old comes to mind.

undines Fri 11-Nov-22 12:39:56

Surely the 'corruption' is by the government foisting such characters on the public and, in effect, trying to pull the wool over our eyes about their worth? Surely it is basically 'corrupt' that such people should be given ANY severance pay (or indeed any pay at all!)

undines Fri 11-Nov-22 12:42:24

Surely someone who calls desperate souls risking their lives on the seas to escape persecution as an 'invasion' does deserve the name 'Cruella'?

Coco51 Fri 11-Nov-22 12:45:16

English lessons for us all then MOnica?

I know of a family who were refused settlement rights to live in Australia because one of their children has Downs Syndrome. The Australian government refused to take responsibility as my godson was likely to be an incumbrance on the state.

I don't think Australia is a great role model as far as immigration is concerned.

How do you feel about this. Was it fair in your opinion?

I remember seeing a beautiful film about a Sicilian family arriving at Ellis Island New York after WW1. They were screened for fleas, nits, diseases, state of teeth, etc. And the boy was interwied and tested for 'intelligence'. All his answers were totally logical and showed great practical common sense. He had never been to school, but knew how to live, count and survive in his own way- working as a sheperd. Most of the group was accepted, but he and his grand-mother refused and sent back. So tragic and moving.

We do it too. Here’s the Home Office Guidance.
‘Although the UK does not bar applicants based on prospective excessive demand on social or health services, applicants can be refused where they may require “major medical treatment” and there are insufficient compassionate grounds to issue a waiver.’
Except where a parent is required for an extremely desirable role, the facility to refuse entry because of a child with disabilities is no doubt utilised - there are far more applicants than capacity.

At the time, my friends were devastated at an apparent rejection, although now they are very happy to have stayed here!

How long has the list of dangerous MPs been circulating?

Beware! Anyone perceived to be calling people names on GN or alluding to them in particular ways is enough for “some posters” to succeed in getting those doing it banned if they don’t like it.
Do I approve of all Suella Braverman’s actions? No-although she is a barrister so perhaps that’s what barristers do.
Do I think using name calling, (the sort of thing that goes on in playground bullying) makes posters appear any better than her? ?? If you call one person names, are you just as likely to refer to others unkindly?

OP Title Will corruption ever end?
No, no matter who is in power. Certainly I hope it will be noticed and acted on much more quickly in future. I’ve seen more than enough corrupt practices in the last few years, both from the politicians and from those who fraudulently claimed and kept grants during Covid.
Was Gavin Williamson fit for the post?
No, nor for a role in Education.
Was he corrupt?

kjmpde Fri 11-Nov-22 14:31:29

it is not corruption as there is no indication of Williamson paying for his job BUT a sign of poor judgement by Sunak. Friendship has to be ignored when choosing people for jobs. I think any pay should be on a basis of pro-rata basis . What other job gives this amount of severance pay for such a small time in post? Why should the tax payer have to foot the bill for Truss and other ministers time in post for a few weeks ?

Your first sentence has lost me Mollygo as Suella Braverman has been widely called Cruella in the media, so if it was reported on Gransnet it wouldn’t be banned would it?

Theoddbird Fri 11-Nov-22 14:47:28

All old news now.....

topcat223 Fri 11-Nov-22 16:57:57

Suella Braverman is in my opinion the only one telling the truth about the economic migrant invasion with 1k per day being ferried in over the channel by the government and who are currently occupying over 250 hotels around the country with a further 4 hotels per week being taken over to house them, they are killing the tourist industry. The hotel rooms should at least be offered first to the British homeless who are left sleeping on the streets or in substandard hostels without being served three meals a day.
Keir Starmer is not averse to making mistakes in his choice of staff after all Jimmy Saville and the grooming gangs were let off under his watch....
I think we should at least give Rishi a chance - the sniping began on his first day...

GlamMaJx Fri 11-Nov-22 17:05:08

I was so hopeful that the Sunak premiership would herald in better government based on integrity, honesty and compassion, he then appoints ‘Odious Williamson’ and ‘Cruella’.!
No wonder the young and others have so little faith in the political systems we currently have.

Fleurpepper Fri 11-Nov-22 17:15:56

oh no, not again- how many times do we have to explain that NO, he did NOT!!!

(Keir Starmer is not averse to making mistakes in his choice of staff after all Jimmy Saville and the grooming gangs were let off under his watch....)

It is not 'sniping, most of us were ready to give him a chance, but then he appointed 2 of the worst to key posts!

I am so glad to hear. But this was not the question. Did they, or did you, think it was right and fair to refuse entry because of child with disability?

ronib Fri 11-Nov-22 18:56:30

Given that my godson was going to stay here with his adorable eldest sister, it did seem to be a very inflexible decision but that’s bureaucracy for you. Although that in itself was a difficult decision. It seems that a Downs Syndrome person is costed out by the Australian government as indeed New Zealand and Uk and probably loads more countries. Seems that most countries have questionable migration systems.

Iam64 Fri 11-Nov-22 19:17:11

topcat, I’ve reported your post that repeats false allegations that Starmer is responsible for Saville and grooming gangs not being prosecuted.

I disagree with your views on Braverman, immigration and homelessness but, that’s simply a political disagreement so no problem. Your false allegations about Starmer are problematic

You obviously aren’t a poster who rushes to have people banned, but I wasn’t thinking about the media. You’re right I wouldn’t call for a ban on people repeating childish name-calling from the media if that’s what they want to do.

Having potentially embarrassing/ incriminating evidence about someone then threatening to release this to the press in order to exact favours seems to be blackmail to me. Corrupt Williamson? Yes, I think so.

That's how party whips work, Anneeba.
